Winter fuel payment scam warning after HMRC receives over 15,000 reports in June
Fraudsters have been targeting vulnerable people using texts and phishing websites.
Last month, HMRC acted to remove 4,600 fake websites linked to winter fuel payments.
The revenue body is urging people to watch out for suspect communications and to report any suspect phone calls, emails or texts via gov.uk.
HMRC will never contact people by text to claim winter fuel payments or request personal information.
Anyone who is eligible for winter fuel payments will receive them automatically without having to make a claim, it said.
HMRC added that any recovery of the payment for pensioners whose total income is over £35,000 will be collected via pay as you earn (PAYE) or self-assessment, dependent on how the person pays tax on their income.
Kelly Paterson, HMRC's chief security officer, said: 'Don't be fooled by these attempts by scammers to take your money or access your personal information.
'Never let yourself be rushed. If someone contacts you saying they're HMRC, wanting you to urgently transfer money or give personal information, be on your guard. If a phone call, text or email is suspicious or unexpected, don't give out private information or reply, and don't download attachments or click on links.
'I'm urging people to be alert to scams relating to winter fuel payments and to report any suspicious texts, phone calls or emails to HMRC.'
Winter fuel payments were previously linked to pension credit, with the Government arguing that this would help to balance a 'black hole' in public finances.
But in June, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced that nine million pensioners will receive the payments this winter as pensioners in England and Wales with an income of £35,000 or less per year benefit.
Ms Reeves said in June that the Government had 'listened to people's concerns' about the decision to limit the payment last winter.

The incident happened on a Jet2 flight which had taken off as normal at 6.41pm last night to fly 1,100 miles to the Spanish resort of Alicante. But the Boeing 737 had only made it 100 miles from Leeds Bradford to Leicester when the captain announced he was turning around due to 'a disruptive incident on board'. The man, who was wearing an orange T shirt and jeans, was led away by uniformed police after the furore on the flight to the Costa Blanca - which ended up delaying as many as 188 other passengers by four hours. The plane safely touched back down at Leeds airport where it had taken off from just 40 minutes earlier. Video clips taken by other passengers showed a man standing up in the aisle and seemingly remonstrating with holidaymakers including a woman who had jumped out of her seat a few rows away from him after the plane came to a standstill. The man can be seen smirking as he stood in the aisle and told another passenger: 'Put your phone down and fight one on one.' As the man he was shouting at stood up to confront him, another chimed in and said: 'You'll get kicked off as well'. The man taunted them by sticking his tongue out and beating his chest, as someone else on the plane shouted: 'Don't rise to it. Let him get chucked off.' Police officers are then seen boarding the aircraft with passengers laughing as they said: 'Look behind ya, lad! Look behind ya, big boy! You w****r!' The rowdy man's smug grin was quickly wiped off his face when he saw the cops coming towards him. He is seen pointing and shouting at the officers, before quickly making a beeline for one of the men he was arguing with and appearing to square up to him, prompting people to shout: 'Arrest him now!'. The entire flight burst into cheers and applause as the man was finally detained and escorted off of the plane, with one yelling: 'In a bit, lad!'. Another clip taken through a window of the plane showed the man talking to three officers on the tarmac as one appeared to search him. Jet2 is said to have sent passengers a message, saying: 'We are sorry that flight LS491 Leeds Bradford to Alicante has diverted to Leeds Bradford due to a disruptive incident on board. 'We are working on the situation and will update you shortly. This is an unscheduled change, so we're doing everything we can to minimise any disruption to your onward journey. Thanks for your understanding and patience.' The plane was forced to stay on the ground until it eventually took off again at 11.10pm, more than four hours after its scheduled departure time. A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: 'At 7.12pm yesterday, police were made aware of a flight which had been diverted from Birmingham to Leeds Bradford Airport due to a disturbance involving a passenger. 'Officers attended and boarded the plane on its arrival at the airport. 'A man was arrested on suspicion of an offence under the Aviation Security Act 1982. 'He remains in custody today and enquiries are continuing.' A Jet2 spokesperson said: 'We can confirm that a disruptive passenger has received a six-month flying ban with us, following their appalling behaviour which led to flight LS491 from Leeds Bradford to Alicante having to return to Leeds Bradford so that police could offload them. 'As a family friendly airline, we take a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive passenger behaviour.' Disruptive plane passengers risk large fines and the threat of possible criminal charges or even a prison sentence. The aviation watchdog, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), says disruptive passengers could be made to pay the cost of diverting a plane, which could easily exceed £10,000.

NEARLY three-quarters of regular punters say betting is a key part of British life - just as the Government plans a new tax hit on bookies. A YouGov poll for the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) shows 74 per cent of regular gamblers believe betting is a unique part of UK culture, underlining the role that regulated betting and gaming play in the social and economic fabric of the UK. 1 But the survey comes as the Treasury looks at big changes to how online betting is taxed, raising fears that higher costs could hurt the industry and push more people to risky black market sites. Around 1.5 million Brits already use these unregulated sites, gambling up to £4.3 billion a year without the safety rules that legal firms follow. Meanwhile, horse racing has delayed a series of fixtures next month in protest at the proposals, without consulting BGC members, whose funding for the sport is mission critical. Betting and Gaming Council CEO Grainne Hurst, said: 'Punters are clear, betting is not just a leisure activity, but a valued and long-standing part of Britain's cultural and sporting landscape. From casinos to bingo, horseracing, football, rugby league, darts, and snooker, millions of adults enjoy betting safely and responsibly each month. 'BGC members are proud to support jobs on the high street, invest in local communities and grassroots sport, and contribute billions in taxes to fund essential public services. 'However, these significant cultural and economic contributions are now at risk. Any further increase in taxation on regulated betting and gaming operators will hurt punters and drive even more towards the illegal, online black market, which pays no tax, supports no jobs, contributes nothing to British sport, and offers no safer gambling protections. 'We want to work with racing and the Government constructively to get the balance right and prevent further tax rises, which will only undermine racing's revenues and threaten investment in the sport, already a more expensive and less profitable product for operators. Labour council spent £80m on scrapped sewage plant
A cash-strapped Labour council spent £80m on relocating a sewage plant in plans that were then scrapped. Cambridge City Council (CCC) had hoped to move Anglian Water's treatment facility in the city to make room for nearly 9,000 homes. Cllr Cameron Holloway, who became the council's leader in May, said it had splashed out £13m of its own money while developing proposals and getting planning permission. However, this proved futile when the Ministry of Housing, Communities, and Local Government (MHCLG) withdrew its funding and dubbed the project 'unaffordable'. Significant increase on expenditure required The announcement came despite around a total of £80m having been spent on plans. Cllr Holloway said he was 'disappointed' at the decision, having been 'excited about the project'. The council had hoped to create a new district made up of 8,600 new homes. 5,600 of which would have been part of a development known as 'Hartree'. Cllr Holloway said: 'I understand that the government's got a lot of pressure on their spending, and the expenditure required has gone up significantly.' The revoking of funding came after MHCLG said costs had risen by some £400m. In a statement, the department said: 'It is vital that taxpayers' money is used responsibly, and cost projection increases have made the relocation proposal unaffordable, with the additional £400m now required beyond the budget available. 'We are committed to ensuring Cambridge has the housing and water infrastructure it needs to reach its full growth potential as we deliver on our Plan for Change.' Cllr Holloway awarded himself a 33 per cent pay rise earlier this month. It was revealed he will now be paid £31,276 a year – up from £23,459 when the allowance was last reviewed. A spokesman for the council at the time said the uplift 'reflects the step-change in workload in recent years and additional responsibilities linked to the pace of growth in Cambridge, and work with the Cambridge Growth Company'. The council drew criticism for offering grants to pay for asylum seekers to have cookery lessons so they could 'experience joy'.
