Wreaths Across America honors Onslow Commissioner for Vietnam War service
ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT)- Wreaths Across America's Jacksonville chapter honored Onslow Commissioner Paul Buchanan for his Vietnam War Service at last night's Board of Commissioners meeting.
The group surprised the purple heart veteran with a 50-year commemorative pin and a proclamation from President Donald Trump welcoming home the way Buchanan and other Vietnam veterans should have been welcomed 50 years ago.
'It's absolutely amazing because it's such an honor to be able to give to these veterans because of the way they were treated when they did back,' Kathy Marks, Wreaths Across America location coordinator, said. 'They didn't deserve what they got.'
The organization's goal is to lay wreaths on over 8,500 veterans grave in both Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery and Onslow Memorial Park during their wreath laying ceremony in December.

Giant storm sewers address flooding in Queens
QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — When storms dump rain on the city, sewers are put to the test. Some of them can't handle the flow. Flooding is a problem around the city. A multi-billion-dollar mega project is underway in Queens. More Local News A half-mile stretch of storm sewer is being 'cast in place,' where crews build the form and concrete is poured. It will eventually run from 149th Avenue and 224th Street along Springfield Lane in Idlewild Park. It will drain into a creek and Jamaica Bay southwest of Rockaway Boulevard. Thomas Foley is the commissioner of the NYC Department of Design and Construction. 'A great engineering feat that's on budget and on schedule. People won't know this is under their feet,' Foley said. Smaller local lines connect to bigger sewers to channel stormwater and runoff. The new sewers at this location can handle more than a million gallons of water a minute. The plan includes protection measures for almost 5 acres of tidal wetland in Idlewild and Brookville parks. The sewers are below ground. PIX11's Greg Mocker walked inside the 12-foot-wide and 8-foot-tall structures with engineers, workers, and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards. 'With about 40 to 50 years of disinvestment, and developers building homes without putting in sewers, that's environmental racism. This will give people the quality of life they deserve. It's the fruits of our labor,' Richards said. The Southeast Queens Initiative is a group of more than 40 infrastructure projects totaling $2.7 billion, which are rebuilding streets and adding drainage throughout Southeast Queens. Crews are working on different sections and connections in the coming years. The project around Idlewild Park is set to be done in September 2026. Confusion, concern around Dupont Circle ahead of big WorldPride weekend
WASHINGTON () — There's confusion and concern swirling around Dupont Circle ahead of WorldPride festivities this weekend. The National Park Service (NPS) announced Monday evening that the neighborhood's central park and fountain , but some D.C. leaders say that plan could be reversed. The park has been home to past Pride celebrations, some of which left behind large amounts of litter and damage. DC police recinds request to close Dupont Circle park during WorldPride after pushback from DC community The NPS said the move came at the request of the DC Police Department, and in efforts to stay in line with President Donald Trump's executive order to protect D.C. landmarks and monuments. Councilmember Brooke Pinto told DC News Now she spoke with Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith Tuesday morning and changed her mind. 'We talked about some of her safety concerns and asked her to reverse the decision to make sure that the space could be opened to the public. And I'm very grateful that she agreed to do so,' said Pinto. MPD shared Smith's letter rescinding her request for non-scalable fencing and closure of the park Tuesday afternoon, though the letter acknowledges the final decision on the park's status this weekend lies with the NPS and U.S. Park Police (USPP). Man seen tearing down Dupont Circle Pride decorations; DC police investigating Confusion surrounding the Circle itself comes as D.C. Police are looking for someone who there Monday night. Video filmed Monday evening and shared with DC News Now shows a man tearing down Pride decorations in Dupont Circle. Caleb Files was on a run in the neighborhood when he noticed what the man was doing, started recording and shared the clip on social media. 'Silence is complicity. In a time like this, I really wanted to make sure that we were showing the hate that people have in their hearts. And it's sad, as we're facing WorldPride, and it's supposed to be a time for everybody to feel welcome here in the District,' said Files. Files said he told nearby police officers about what he saw and showed them the video. He said officers immediately began to search for the man and investigate. MPD told DC News Now it is investigating the incident as a destruction of property crime with hate and bias against the LGBTQ community. 'I hope that, if you have hate in your heart, that you can find something that overcomes that hate; we are not a hating people. Queer people need to be visible, especially in a time like this,' said Files. DC News Now saw crews with the Dupont Circle BID replacing the banners on Tuesday. Neighbors said their Pride celebrations and decorations will not be swayed. 'It was upsetting at first,' said one neighbor. 'As I am walking down the street, I just see joy everywhere. One little bad apple tears down one poster, a new poster is going to go up the following day.' Police: Rockford man injures officer during weapons arrest
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police arrested Pierre Watson, 31, for weapons possession by a felon, among other charges. On June 1, around 1:41 a.m., officers pulled over Watson's Chevrolet Monte Carlo when he did not use a turn signal, according to court records. Authorities determined Watson had a suspended driver's license in Illinois. When officials approached the car, they could smell cannabis and saw an open bottle of Hennessy. The suspect was taken into custody but attempted to run away, causing an officer to be injured. Police searched the vehicle and found a loaded pistol. Watson was previously convicted of intending to deliver controlled substances in 2017 and 2020. He is charged with possession of a firearm without a FOID, transporting an open alcohol container, unlawful possession of cannabis, driving on a suspended license, driving an uninsured vehicle, improper turn signal use, possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a firearm by a repeat felon, resisting an officer.
