The European Union has eased rules for Turks to use its open-border Schengen area, the bloc's ambassador to Ankara said on Friday, calling for the urgent revival of negotiations on visa-free travel for Turks. For years, Turks have complained about the EU's visa system. The EU has said the processes - managed by accredited visa agencies - have been slow due to the high number of applications and that it is discussing possible workarounds with Ankara. Ambassador Thomas Hans Ossowski said the new rules would help address Turks' complaints over long bureaucratic processes but warned it was not enough to permanently solve the problems."It will be much easier and much faster for Turkish citizens," Ossowski told reporters in Ankara, referring to the European Commission's new decision, in effect since July 15, simplifying the path to multiple-entry visas for Turks.Turks who previously used visas correctly will be eligible for a six-month visa as early as their second application, followed by one-year, three-year and five-year multiple-entry visas.Turkey's foreign ministry welcomed the move and said Turkish institutions and the EU Commission would keep seeking further visa easing.Trade Minister Omer Bolat said the measure was a "facilitation that our citizens have been awaiting for a long time".Bolat also told the state-owned Anadolu news agency that Turkey wanted to start talks on modernising a customs union with the EU and for the scope of the accord to expand into the service and e-commerce sectors.Turkey has been an EU membership candidate since 1999 but its accession process has been frozen for years over issues ranging from human rights to democratic backsliding. There have recently been signs of increased engagement and economic cooperation.Ossowski said the EU had for more than a decade offered Turkey the prospect of visa-free travel and stressed the need to return to the liberalisation process."Every other candidate country has visa-free travel except Turkey," he said. "It is urgent to re-engage in this process of visa-free travel in the Schengen space and the EU," he added. The Commission is ready to restart formal negotiations after the summer and work with Ankara on fulfilling the six remaining benchmarks required by the visa liberalisation roadmap, he said."We are ready, the Commission is ready to work closely with Turkish authorities," he said.

Safety, education and empowerment of women need support from all, says Women Commission chief
Andhra Pradesh Women's Commission Chairperson Rayapati Sailaja on Wednesday (July 23) highlighted that the safety of women, along with their education and empowerment, must be a collective responsibility of families and society. Addressing the media here, Ms. Sailaja said the Commission was on a brisk tour of the districts with a mission to spread awareness on the issues faced by women. 'The government has launched a number of welfare, empowerment and safety initiatives, but the real change should come from women themselves as they should remain eternally vigilant and utilise all the technology and support systems at their disposal to ensure their safety and progress,' she said. Expressing serious concern at the incidence of online frauds, the panel chief cautioned women against falling victim to stalkers and strangers online. Ms. Sailaja further warned against the negative impact of certain films on students and youth, calling for early intervention and guidance from parents. She reiterated that the problem of child marriages would be sternly dealt with and that the enforcement agencies have been directed to launch awareness drives across vulnerable areas. Ms. Sailaja urged young women and girl students to channel their energy towards education and empowerment. Ms. Sailaja called on the managements of educational institutions and workplaces to constitute internal complaint committees to prevent incidents of sexual harassment and regularly organise orientation for girl students and women. She also unveiled the publicity posters on 'Prevention of Domestic Violence', appealing to the target groups to download and install the Shakti App on their mobile phones.

UK brings Turkey to Eurofighter club with a preliminary deal for Typhoon jets
Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler and his British counterpart, John Healey, signed a MOU during a defence industry show in Istanbul, according to the Turkish Ministry of National Defence read more Turkey, a NATO member, has long sought to purchase 40 Eurofighter planes produced by a collaboration of British, German, and Italian businesses. File image/ AP Turkey and Britain inked a preliminary deal on Wednesday for the sale of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter planes to Turkey, marking a significant step forward in Ankara's goals to modernise its air fleet. Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler and his British counterpart, John Healey, signed a memorandum of understanding during a defence industry show in Istanbul, according to the Turkish Ministry of National Defence. Turkey, a NATO member, has long sought to purchase 40 Eurofighter planes produced by a collaboration of British, German, and Italian businesses. Germany apparently first rejected the transaction but eventually changed its position. Britain oversaw discussions on behalf of the group. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD According to a statement from Turkey's defence ministry, the pact brings the two countries 'one step closer to a full agreement on the Typhoon.' 'Both Ministers welcome signature as a positive step towards bringing Turkey into the Typhoon club and share a mutual ambition to conclude the necessary arrangements as soon as possible,' it added. Britain's BAE Systems, a part of the consortium, hailed the agreement and stated that it will continue to work with the Turkish and British governments to finalise the procurement deal. Turkish authorities have stated that they are currently negotiating price and technical details, having received an initial bid and want to submit a counter-proposal. Turkey is also looking to return to the US-led F-35 fighter jet program, from which it was expelled in 2019 after purchasing Russian-made S-400 missile defence systems. The US said the systems presented a threat to the F-35s. Turkey is also building a homegrown fifth-generation fighter plane, the KAAN, which is expected to be operational in 2028.

Reliance in focus as EU warns refiners using Russia oil
The oil-procurement patterns of India's Reliance Industries Ltd. are coming under scrutiny after the European Union announced new restrictions on diesel made from Russian crude. Reliance bought Abu Dhabi's Murban crude in a rare purchase late last week, traders said, adding that it picked up the cargo soon after Friday's sanction package. The private refiner isn't a regular buyer of the UAE grade, a premium crude that tends to be costlier than its regular appetite of Russian Urals and heavier Middle Eastern varieties. Separately, people familiar with Reliance's import plans said the company has begun seeking to diversify its crude purchases away from Russia, its single-biggest source of oil so far this year. The people asked not to be identified as they aren't authorized to speak publicly. A company spokesman wasn't immediately available to comment on the matter when contacted during regular working hours. Reliance, a mega refiner owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, and other Indian processors have been among the world's top beneficiaries of Moscow's war in Ukraine. Europe shunned Russian crudes soon after the 2022 invasion, leading to deep cargo discounts that enticed Indian refiners to crank up opportunistic buying for production of fuels such as diesel, which it resold to western customers. According to ship-tracking data compiled by Kpler, Russia has supplied almost half of Reliance's crude imports so far this year. In turn, around one-fifth of the processor's total product exports were sold to Europe. The process of refining Russian crude into diesel for sales into Europe has put Reliance in the line of fire of EU's latest pressure on Moscow, with the ban set to take effect Jan. 21 next year. While it's too early to tell if Reliance will pivot dramatically away from Russia, traders say there are some initial signs of the company seeking alternatives from places such as the Middle East. Still, it's unclear how the mega refiner will source close to 600,000 barrels a day of crude from other producers, and at what cost, they added. So far, the South Asian nation has been critical of latest EU sanctions, with India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday saying that there was a need for 'balance' when secondary sanctions are imposed on the purchase of Russian oil and gas.
