OpenAI launches first global education platform in India in partnership with IndiaAI Mission
OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, has partnered with IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and IT to unveil its first international education platform, OpenAI Academy India. The initiative, launched on Thursday, marks a significant step in expanding access to artificial intelligence (AI) education and tools for diverse learner groups across the country.
As part of the collaboration, OpenAI and IndiaAI signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that outlines the shared objectives of fostering AI literacy and innovation. The Academy aims to bolster India's rapidly evolving digital ecosystem by empowering students, developers, educators, civil servants, nonprofit leaders, and small business owners with essential AI skills. The platform blends online and offline learning and will initially offer courses in English and Hindi, with plans to incorporate additional regional languages in the near future. OpenAI will also integrate its learning modules with the IndiaAI Mission's FutureSkills platform, alongside contributing educational content to iGOT Karmayogi, a capacity-building platform for government officials.
'This partnership represents a significant stride towards making cutting-edge AI tools and knowledge accessible to all,' said Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. 'By opening doors to future-ready skills, we are enabling our startups, researchers, and developers to innovate faster and more effectively.'
To support grassroots innovation, OpenAI has committed to offering up to $100,000 in API credits to 50 startups or fellows approved by the IndiaAI Mission. Additionally, the Academy will organise a series of hackathons across seven Indian states, engaging around 25,000 students. Winners will be offered the opportunity to attend OpenAI's global Dev Day event.
The Academy will also contribute to one of IndiaAI's most ambitious goals, training one million teachers in the application of generative AI technologies in education.
Workshops and webinars conducted by OpenAI experts will take place in six major cities, further enriching the hybrid learning experience and community engagement. The programme's Knowledge Hub will provide free access to video lectures, interactive tutorials, real-world modules, and peer-based learning circles to encourage collaborative learning.
Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI, lauded India's momentum in the AI sector, stating, 'India is emerging as one of the most dynamic hubs for AI innovation. We are thrilled to collaborate with IndiaAI to empower individuals with the skills and confidence to harness AI meaningfully in their daily lives and careers.'

India will need 50L new CAs by 2050, says ICAI president
Vadodara: By 2050, India will require 50 lakh new chartered accountants (CAs) to support its rapidly expanding economy, said Charanjot Singh Nanda, president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), on Friday. Nanda was speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day national conference titled 'Veda Excellence', hosted by the Vadodara branch of ICAI's Western India Regional Council in collaboration with the Anand and Bharuch branches. "Currently, India has around 4.85 lakh registered CAs. With economic growth, the demand for qualified professionals will increase significantly," Nanda said. Highlighting ICAI's digital initiatives, he said the institute has provided students free access to ChatGPT and launched CA-GPT, an AI-powered tool that sources answers exclusively from ICAI's internal resources. "This tool has been widely appreciated for aiding professionals in areas like accounting, auditing, and taxation," he noted. Responding to the move by company secretary and cost accountant bodies seeking inclusion of their members in the definition of 'accountants', Nanda maintained that tax and other audits should remain the domain of CAs, as they are best equipped and trained for these responsibilities. Nanda also announced the launch of a certificate course on artificial intelligence — AI for CAs (Level 1) — aimed at helping professionals adapt to emerging technologies. The second level of the course will be launched soon, he added. AU to double intake for BE civil engg (Tamil)
Chennai: Anna University is planning to increase intake in BE civil engineering (Tamil medium) offered at College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) from 30 seats to 60 seats from the 2025-26 academic year. On a pilot basis, the state govt launched two Tamil medium engineering programmes in civil and mechanical engineering at CEG in 2010. These Tamil medium courses have been attracting top rankers as they provide an opportunity to study engineering on one of the premier campuses. The cut-off for Tamil medium course was around 186 out of 200 marks. "We are planning to expand our civil engineering programmes. As a first step, we are increasing intake in Tamil medium course this year," said professor S Kanmani, head, department of civil engineering, CEG. Students will study the course in Tamil and can write the exam in Tamil or English. Professors said many graduates from the Tamil medium course got jobs in public works department (PWD) due to the reservation for Tamil medium students. There was a court ruling that only those who studied from Class VI could avail of this reservation.
