Malaysia targets ports to adopt B20 biodiesel in drive toward net-zero emissions

Malay Mail4 days ago

SEPANG, May 29 — The government is targeting all ports nationwide currently using B10 palm-based biodiesel in their operations to transition to B20 biodiesel, said Plantations and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
Johari said the initiative would support the country's efforts to meet its goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity based on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 45 per cent by 2030 and to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
'In the future, I want to see every port, like Penang Port, Port Klang, Tanjung Pelepas Port, Johor Port and Kuantan Port, start using B20 biodiesel in their operations.
'We are currently collecting statistics, and based on that data, we will be able to determine the operational costs involved,' he told reporters after launching the B20 Use Pilot Project for Ground Service Vehicles and Machinery at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) here today.
He said the government had already begun pilot projects for the use of B20 biodiesel in Langkawi, Labuan and Sarawak in 2020 and now at KLIA for ground service vehicles and machinery to create a big impact and be a catalyst for national change in the use of green energy.
Johari said the initiative not only supports Malaysia's transition toward sustainable energy but alsod the initiative not only supports Malaysia's transition toward sustainable energy but also strengthens the country's position as the world's second largest producer of palm oil, which is committed to responsible and proactive practices.
'This is one of the government's key initiatives because we've made a commitment to the world that we intend to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,' he said.
According to Johari, the project is being implemented through a strategic collaboration between the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Petronas Dagangan Bhd, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and Syarikat Teras Kembang Sdn Bhd.
He said Petronas Dagangan Bhd serves as the B20 biodiesel supplier, MAHB as the airport operator, while Syarikat Teras Kembang Sdn Bhd manages the petrol stations supplying B20 to operators of ground service vehicles and machinery at KLIA.
'This launch is a historic milestone as it marks the first time B20 biodiesel has been introduced for the ground service sector or the industrial sector at airports in Malaysia,' he said.
B20 is a blend of 20 per cent palm methyl ester (PME) and 80 per cent petroleum diesel. Its use is seen as contributing to sustainability and reducing the use of fossil-based fuels, as well as reducing the use of GHGs that cause global warming. — Bernama

For traders, this means opportunity—but also volatility. The economic calendar is packed with macroeconomic data releases and central bank meetings, while geopolitical risks remain close to the the usual inflation prints and interest rate decisions, markets will also have to digest key developments around global diplomacy: the NATO and G7 summits, peace negotiations in Eastern Europe, U.S. trade talks with China and the European Union, as well as debates around nuclear policy in the Middle East. Add to this the lingering fiscal tensions in Washington , and it's clear that June won't be business as usual. Octa Broker explains why the economic calendar is worth monitoring and what events to watch out for in June traders, the economic calendar is more than a schedule—it's a risk map. It flags:These events affect not just macro sentiment but also short-term liquidity and intraday volatility. And when several collide—as they will in June—market reactions tend to be sharper, faster, and harder to fade. Anticipating such events in advance allows traders to capitalise on potential opportunities and adjust risk management—some even avoid trading during are some major events to follow in June:June is shaping up to be an eventful month for currencies and rate-sensitive assets, with seven major central bank meetings scheduled—the BoC, BoE, BoJ, ECB, Fed, SNB, and PBoC. Traders can anticipate heightened volatility not only in the major USD-based pairs but also in equity indices, individual stocks, and commodities. June's Federal Reserve meeting is particularly important, accompanied by updated Economic Projections and the Dot Plot—forward-looking instruments via which markets infer future rate trajectories. Surprises can unleash dramatic repricing in Treasury yields, gold, and risk paths remain divergent. In the U.S., core CPI slowed to 2.3% YoY , potentially softening the Fed's stance. Meanwhile, ECB officials appear divided: Klaas Knot said inflation risks remain uncertain, while Pierre Wunsch hinted that rates could fall below 2%. This split supports tactical positioning in EUR/USD and EUR/GBP, particularly around central bank summits aren't ceremonial. The G7 Summit will cover trade security and energy cooperation, while the NATO meeting will focus on defence spending and alliance posture. As Moody's warned , the sustainability of U.S. debt is becoming a market risk. Traders should watch for safe-haven rotation into gold, Bitcoin, Swiss franc (CHF), and the Japanese yen (JPY). Japan, however, is facing debt troubles of its own, as yields on 30-year bonds recently climbed to multi-decade highs, prompting calls to BoJ to either increase bond buying or halt its plans to gradually reduce such purchases. Either way, traders should keep a close eye on both the U.S. and the Japanese bond May U.S.-China joint statement hinted at easing tensions—but markets remain are still several critical obstacles to a comprehensive trade agreement between the parties. For example, on May 12th, China's Ministry of Commerce strengthened control over strategic mineral exports, on which the U.S. is highly dependent. Other critical sticking points include technology transfer issues and Artificial Intelligence (AI), as China's growing semiconductor self-sufficiency efforts are not particularly favoured in Washington. Furthermore, there is still uncertainty as to whether any meaningful progress in trade talks between the U.S. and EU can be achieved in June. Although the parties agreed to fast-track the negotiations , some business leaders are won't be a month for passive positioning. We must prevent worker exposure to workplace hazardous chemicals — Wong Soo Kan

JUNE 2 — In Malaysia many industries handle and use chemicals in their everyday operations. The hazards of the chemicals used vary remarkably from less hazardous like our household chemicals to very hazardous chemicals that could cause irreversible long-term health effects. Some examples of these effects include acute symptoms like skin irritation, and eye irritation, while some cause chronic conditions like asthma, cancer, neurological disorders, and reproductive problems. The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) enacted the Use and Standards of Exposure of Chemicals Hazardous to Health (USECHH) Regulation 2000 governing the use of chemicals in the workplace. The law requires employers to provide information about the identities and hazards of the chemicals used in their workplace. DOSH also has the regulation Classification, Labelling and Safety Data Sheet of Hazardous Chemicals) Regulations 2013 (CLASS 2013) which requires employers using hazardous chemicals to ensure they are properly labelled and their safety data sheets are accessible to workers. The workers must be trained to handle the chemicals correctly. The training for workers must also include information on the hazards of the chemicals and the measures to protect themselves Chemical manufacturers and importers are required to classify their chemicals appropriately, and prepare labels and safety data sheets complying with CLASS 2013 regulations. A file picture of workers from Kualiti Alam conducting checks on chemical drums in Kuala Selangor. — Bernama pic Exposure to chemicals is preventable. Without adequate controls on chemical exposure, workers could suffer long-term health effects. Many health effects from chemical exposures manifest years after exposure. The delay between the exposure and the appearance of health effects is called the latency period. The latency period can vary significantly depending on the chemical, the nature of the exposure, and individual susceptibility. Due to the long latency periods associated with chronic diseases of hazardous chemicals, USECHH 2000 regulation requires employers to send their workers for medical surveillance. The law also requires employers to maintain detailed records of workplace exposures for at least 30 years. This is because occupational cancers, like mesothelioma, can have latency periods between 10 to 40 years or even longer. Hazardous chemicals come in several physical forms like liquid, gas, solid and vapour. Exposure can occur through four routes, depending on the form of the substance: inhalation; skin or eye absorption, and ingestion. Employers have responsibilities to minimise workers' exposure by adopting the appropriate exposure controls. In summary, chemical exposure in the workplace can pose significant health risks, ranging from immediate symptoms to chronic conditions. Proper prevention measures, and training, are essential to protect workers from the adverse effects of chemicals. * This is the personal opinion of the writer or publication and does not necessarily represent the views of Malay Mail
