Fighting fund set up to save working men's club
FoBGWMC said the fund would pay for a planning bid to persuade Tower Hamlets Council to save the club. About £7,000 has been raised, with the aim to raise £12,000 by 8 April.
In June 2024, the club was given a two-month eviction notice. Equity, the actor's union, then launched an online petition to halt plans to close the venue.
Equity's Nick Keegan said the venue, where some scenes from Netflix's Baby Reindeer were filmed, was a "crucial and irreplaceable fixture of London's cultural heritage".
More than half of London's LGBTQ+ venues closed between 2006 and 2022, Greater London Authority data shows.
BGWMC has functioned as a community-owned social club since 1973, with a history of shared ownership that goes back to 1888.
FoBGWMC said the money from the crowdfunding campaign would pay for a full chartered survey and valuation of the building, as well as cover the planning application costs.
It added an extended target of £18,000 would allow the group to develop a robust business plan with financial projections and cover all consultancy and accountancy costs.
The aim is to build an investment case for one of two preferred outcomes: for Tower Hamlets Council to buy the club and then lease it back to FoBGWMC or for the council to allow FoBGWMC to purchase the club themselves.
The building is owned by a group called the Boro of Bethnal Green Working Men's Club.
FoBGWMC said despite the ongoing success of the club, the group wanted to sell the building, with the proceeds shared between about 50 individuals, potentially ending 130 years of working-class community ownership.
Equity's Mr Keegan added: "A community purchase on this scale will be no small task.
"We believe it is essential to save this unique cultural facility and give it a chance to continue serving the local community of Tower Hamlets, the LGBTQ+ community, and the wider cultural tapestry of London for future generations."
A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets Council said: "The BGWMC is an important venue for our LGBTQIA+ community, especially at a time where there is a decline in LGBTQIA+ spaces across London.
"This is why the council has approved an application for the Bethnal Green Working Men's Club to be an asset of community value.
"We have not received notice of the owner's intention to sell the property and we are not aware of the building being marketed as 'for sale'. We have contacted the freeholder for further details, and about their obligation to inform us of any intention to sell."

Baby Reindeer Star Richard Gadd Has Undergone A Dramatic Transformation For His New Series
Between his severe new haircut and – let's just call a spade a spade here – his pretty jacked bod, you'd be forgiven for not recognising Richard Gadd in the new photos from the set of his next TV show. Last year, shortly after his show Baby Reindeer launched him to international fame, the Emmy winner shared that he was already hard at work on a new project. This new show, a joint venture between the BBC and US broadcaster HBO, would feature Richard and Jamie Bell as Niall and Ruben, two Scottish men whose lifelong friendship is explored over the course of the six episodes. While Richard's next venture, titled Half Man, won't air until next year, the BBC has now released new-look images of its two leads on set. 📸 Take a first look at Richard Gadd and Jamie Bell in Half ManThe original six-episode drama is coming to the BBC in 2026More here ➡️ — BBC Press Office (@bbcpress) August 20, 2025 View this post on Instagram A post shared by HBO Max (@hbomax) A BBC press release said: 'Half Man explores the highs and lows of Ruben and Niall's relationship, from meeting them as troubled teenagers to witnessing their falling out as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way. HBO Max shares first look at new drama series from the creator of Netflix's 'Baby Reindeer' — here's what we know so far
After bringing us one of the most talked-about Netflix shows of 2024, "Baby Reindeer" creator Richard Gadd is returning to our screens (and a new streaming service) in 2026 with his new drama, "Half Man". The six-part series — which was previously titled "Lions" — is a co-production between HBO Max and the BBC, and, over a year after HBO joined the project, the two broadcasters have shared some first-look images from the new show. The series revolves around a pair of "brothers", Niall (Jamie Bell) and Ruben (Gadd), and their tumultuous relationship. This first collection of "Half Man" stills features three first-look images and can be seen throughout this article. Two feature the two stars on set, while a third (above) teases what looks to be a tense conversation between Niall and Ruben in a diner. Unfortunately, we do not have a firm "Half Man" release date just yet. All we know is the series is due to air on HBO Max in the US, Latin America, and Europe, and on BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and BBC Scotland in the UK. Hopefully, one will arrive soon, though. Per a BBC press release, we know that these photos were released shortly after filming for "Half Man" wrapped in and around Glasgow, Scotland. With that in mind, it seems possible we won't have to wait too much longer for the show to arrive. And with the logline promising plenty of drama and an "explosion of violence," it sure sounds like "Half Man" will be a show you won't want to miss. The full synopsis for "Half Man" reads: "'Half Man' follows estranged 'brothers' Niall (Jamie Bell) and Ruben (Richard Gadd). When Niall's estranged 'brother' Ruben shows up at his wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives. "The series will capture the wild energy of a changing city - a changing world, even - and plumb the depths of what it means to be a man." In addition to Gadd, Bell, Campbell and Robertson, the "Half Man" cast will also include Neve McIntosh, Marianne McIvor, Charlie De Melo, Bilal Hasna, Julie Cullen, Amy Manson, Philippine Velge, Stuart McQuarrie, Piers Ewart, Scot Greenan, Charlotte Blackwood, and Calum Manchip. Like "Baby Reindeer," the series is created, written, and executive produced by Richard Gadd, and directed by Alexandra Brodski and Eshref Reybrouck.
