Australian BASE jumper James Nowland dies in Italian Dolomites accident
James Nowland who lived in Western Australia, died on Wednesday in the famous mountain ranges in Italy's north-east.
Italian media reported the 42-year-old died after leaping from the summit of Sass Pordoi in Val di Fassa on Wednesday afternoon local time.
It was reported emergency services were called after the crash at an altitude of 1,700 metres, likely due to a technical problem that prevented Mr Nowland from opening his canopy.
"Rest in peace … Hope you're soaring through the clouds doing what you love forever," his brother posted to social media.
"He left us too early but doing what he loves."
BASE jumping is an extreme sport that involves jumping off high objects, using a parachute to descend to the ground.
BASE is acronym for buildings, antennas, spans (bridges) and Earth (cliffs).
The Australian BASE association described the dangers of the sport as "obvious and very real" and says it is an activity to progress onto after mastering skydiving.
Meanwhile, Austrian extreme sports pioneer Felix Baumgartner has died in a paragliding accident in central Italy on Thursday.
Baumgartner made headlines around the world in October 2012 when he jumped from a balloon 38 kilometres above Earth, becoming the first skydiver to break the sound barrier, typically measured at more than 1,110 kph.

Spain sets sight on England in pursuit of elusive UEFA Women's Championship
Spain's remarkable run in international competitions could reach another high on Monday morning AEST when it takes on England in the UEFA Women's Championship final in Basel. The Spanish are playing in their first European decider in only their fifth appearance at the tournament. The reigning world and Nations League champions will be looking for a repeat of their 1-0 defeat of England in the 2023 World Cup final in Sydney. They qualified for the Euro 2025 final by defeating Germany 1-0 via an extra-time goal to Aitana Bonmatí in the semifinals. "Now we'll start looking at England more closely," Spain coach Montse Torme said. "Although, our analysts have already been watching them live and studying their performance in this Euro [tournament]. "We're going to dive deeper into their game, and we're going all-in." For all its dominance in recent years, Spain is still a relative newcomer at the top table in women's football. Spain's only previous visit to the Euro semifinals was in 1997. Quarterfinal exits came in the 2013, 2017 and 2022 tournaments. ABC Sport will be live blogging the UEFA Women's Championship final on Monday morning AEST. England needed extra time to snatch a 2-1 win over Italy in their semifinal on Wednesday AEST. The Lionesses are defending champions, having won the 2022 Euros on home soil. Reuters/ABC

Kyrgios slams Sinner's shock reunion with banned coach Ferrara
World No.1 Jannik Sinner is teaming up once again with Umberto Ferrara, the fitness coach he sacked in 2024 after it was revealed that the Italian had tested positive for doping. Since the revelation of Sinner's positive tests for the anabolic steroid clostebol, Sinner has constantly maintained his innocence, laying the blame squarely on his team. Although he quickly dismissed Ferrara and his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, after the revelation of his positive tests, Sinner still described the former as an 'excellent coach' on the sidelines of the ATP Finals in Turin in November 2024. Australia's Nick Kyrgios called out the move quickly on social media, declaring that 'we have been played.' Italy's Jannik Sinner won his first Wimbledon title this year. Picture: AP Photo 'Jannik Sinner has reappointed Umberto Ferrara as his fitness coach with immediate effect,' his new management team Avima announced in a brief statement. 'The decision has been made in alignment with Jannik's management team as part of ongoing preparations for upcoming tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open and US Open. 'Umberto has played an important role in Jannik's development to date, and his return reflects a renewed focus on continuity and performance at the highest level.' Doping authorities accepted that it was accidental and imposed a three-month ban which Sinner served following his victory in the Australian Open in January. He returned in time for the French Open where he lost an epic final to Carlos Alcaraz before beating the Spaniard in four sets to win his first Wimbledon title earlier this month.
