HANOI : French President Emmanuel Macron's office played down an incident today in which his wife, Brigitte, appeared to push him in the face as the couple arrived in Vietnam at the start of a Southeast Asia tour.
In a video, Brigitte Macron appeared to shove her husband before he descended from the presidential plane late on Sunday, causing him to step back before he recovered and waved to the cameras at the foot of the stairs of the aircraft.
She remained momentarily hidden behind the plane's fuselage, blocking any view of her body language. The couple then descended the steps together.
An Elysee official played down the moment, denying it showed an argument between the couple, who have been married since 2007.
'It was a moment when the president and his wife were relaxing one last time before the start of the trip by having a laugh.'
'It was a moment of closeness,' the official said.
Macron's visit to Vietnam, the first by a French president in almost a decade, comes as he aims to boost France's influence in its former colony.
Vietnam, which has a heavily export-driven economy, has made concessions to the US in trade talks in a bid to avoid 46% tariffs. But Brussels has concerns that Vietnam's efforts to buy more American goods could come at Europe's expense.
US President Donald Trump threatened on Friday to impose 50% tariffs on imports from the EU, but softened his stance two days later, restoring a July 9 deadline for talks between Washington and Brussels.

Tengku Zafrul: Asean can crack top four spot in global economy by 2030
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Asean can become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030 if the region maintains a steady gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 4.0-5.0 per cent, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz. He noted that Asean's GDP growth projection for 2025 currently stands at 4.7 per cent, as shared by the Asean Secretariat. 'But things are very dynamic. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also just reduced their forecast of global growth. Earlier in his speech, Tengku Zafrul said the five-year AEC Strategic Plan will keep Asean's policies current and updated, so Asean can be more responsive to evolving business needs and emerging challenges. 'As the first instalment of this long-term vision, the plan serves as a comprehensive roadmap that outlines a clear and actionable path forward. 'This has been carefully developed to implement the economic aspects of the Asean Community Vision 2045, harnessing Asean's vast opportunities and potential,' he said. Tengku Zafrul said the AEC Strategic Plan will play a key role in enabling Asean to achieve its ambition of becoming the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030. He added that the plan emphasises the establishment of a robust digital economic framework, aimed at doubling Asean's digital economy to reach US$2 trillion by 2030. The plan clearly demonstrates Asean's readiness to embrace transformation, enhance connectivity, and promote innovation, all anchored on the core principles of sustainability and inclusivity, he said. 'This preparedness surely strengthens Asean's global positioning and attractiveness. 'We are confident that Asean's efforts on, among others, manufacturing productivity, resource efficiency, green financing and investments, as well as energy security and sustainability, will ensure that this region has the resilience to face future challenges and embrace golden opportunities,' he added. — Bernama

Outrage as Facebook group with over 12,000 members targets minors with obscene posts, Wanita PKR calls for crackdown
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Wanita PKR has called for urgent action from authorities following the discovery of a Facebook group allegedly sharing photos of underage schoolchildren with sexually explicit commentary. In a statement today, the party's women's wing urged the police, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to take firm and immediate action against any activity that promotes sexual crimes against minors, according to a report published today in Free Malaysia Today. 'Wanita PKR also calls on parents and all of society to be constantly alert and responsible for the safety of children from sexual violence,' it said. '(This includes) monitoring social media for groups with elements of obscenity, grooming and sexual harassment, and for comments that insult the modesty of children,' it said in a statement today. The group, named 'Group Budak2 Sekolah Rendah', which is now inaccessible, reportedly had over 12,000 members and contained photos of minors in school uniforms, traditional outfits, sportswear, and casual attire, many accompanied by inappropriate captions. The matter came to public attention after rapper Ariz Ramli, known as Caprice, received an Instagram tip-off and reported the group to the MCMC and police. Social media influencer Wee Yun Nee, or Mekyun, also spoke out after discovering childhood photos of herself on the page. The sharing of children's images without consent for exploitative purposes violates the Child Act 2001 and Section 211 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which deals with offensive online content.

Investor optimism keeps Bursa in positive territory at opening
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Bursa Malaysia extended yesterday's momentum to open higher today, as current stock valuations remain appealing, prompting continued accumulation by local institutions, said Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng. At 9.05 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 3.70 points to 1,527.54 from Wednesday's close of 1,523.84. The benchmark index opened at 1,527.71, higher by 3.87 points. Market breadth was positive with 123 advancers versus 108 decliners, while 250 counters were unchanged, 1,914 untraded and 17 suspended. Turnover stood at 88.62 million units, valued at RM51.38 million. Thong explained that the FBM KLCI jumped above the 1,520 mark as buyers emerged. 'This may be due to stock accumulation by local institutions. Though fundamentals remain largely unchanged, we expect the index to hover within the 1,520-1,530 range today,' he told Bernama. The top 30 counters showed a mixed performance, ranging from flat to higher, with gains led by IHH, which added nine sen to RM6.95, Petronas Gas was 26 sen better at RM17.96, Press Metal improved five sen to RM5.05 and MISC was eight sen better at RM7.78. Among the most active stocks, MPire was flat at 12 sen, while its warrants erased half-a-sen to 11.5 sen. Velesto was unchanged at 18.5 sen, Paradigm REIT also traded flat at RM1.03, XL warrant lost half-a-sen to seven sen while Bumi Armada added one sen to 48.5 sen.
