Tengku Zafrul: Asean can crack top four spot in global economy by 2030

Malay Maila day ago

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Asean can become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030 if the region maintains a steady gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 4.0-5.0 per cent, said Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
He noted that Asean's GDP growth projection for 2025 currently stands at 4.7 per cent, as shared by the Asean Secretariat.
'But things are very dynamic. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also just reduced their forecast of global growth.
'It really depends on the global economic situation,' he said during the press conference after the launch of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) Strategic Plan 2026–2030 here today.
Earlier in his speech, Tengku Zafrul said the five-year AEC Strategic Plan will keep Asean's policies current and updated, so Asean can be more responsive to evolving business needs and emerging challenges.
'As the first instalment of this long-term vision, the plan serves as a comprehensive roadmap that outlines a clear and actionable path forward.
'This has been carefully developed to implement the economic aspects of the Asean Community Vision 2045, harnessing Asean's vast opportunities and potential,' he said.
Tengku Zafrul said the AEC Strategic Plan will play a key role in enabling Asean to achieve its ambition of becoming the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030.
He added that the plan emphasises the establishment of a robust digital economic framework, aimed at doubling Asean's digital economy to reach US$2 trillion by 2030.
The plan clearly demonstrates Asean's readiness to embrace transformation, enhance connectivity, and promote innovation, all anchored on the core principles of sustainability and inclusivity, he said.
'This preparedness surely strengthens Asean's global positioning and attractiveness.
'We are confident that Asean's efforts on, among others, manufacturing productivity, resource efficiency, green financing and investments, as well as energy security and sustainability, will ensure that this region has the resilience to face future challenges and embrace golden opportunities,' he added. — Bernama

Ringgit rallies against greenback on weak US data

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit extended its gains against the US dollar at Friday's open, buoyed by continued weakness in US economic data, an analyst said. At 8am, the local unit strengthened to 4.2095/4.2270 against the greenback, from Thursday's close of 4.2155/4.2245. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.72% to 97.0921, its lowest since March 2022, as data indicated a cooling labour market and moderating inflation trajectory. He noted the core Producer Price Index (PPI) for May rose 3.0% year-on-year, below the consensus estimate of 3.1%. Initial jobless claims also rose to 248,000 last week, higher than the forecast of 242,000. 'Such data are seen as critical in shaping the US Federal Reserve's (Fed) stance ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on June 17 and 18,' he added. Afzanizam said while the Fed is expected to keep the Federal Funds Rate unchanged at 4.50%, market participants will be watching the central bank's quarterly economic projections closely. 'In March, Fed officials projected the policy rate at 3.9% for 2025, which implies two rate cuts this year. 'On that note, we believe emerging market currencies, including the ringgit, are poised to appreciate,' he said. At the same time, the ringgit traded mostly lower against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the euro to 4.8860/4.9063 from Thursday's close of 4.8765/4.8869, but weakened vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9412/2.9539 from 2.9329/2.9394, and slipped against the British pound to 5.7363/5.7601 from 5.7213/5.7335. Against Asean currencies, the ringgit was mixed. It edged up against the Philippine peso to 7.54/7.58 from 7.55/7.57 and gained slightly versus the Indonesian rupiah to 259.1/260.3 from 259.5/260.2. However, it eased against the Singapore dollar to 3.2936/3.3078 from 3.2934/3.3006, and declined against the Thai baht to 13.0124/13.0754 from 12.9828/13.0173.

It's still early days, but Yusoff Rawther deserves his freedom now — Hafiz Hassan

JUNE 13 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was charged in the High Court under Section 377A of the Penal Code with committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature against his then personal assistant, Mohd Saiful Bukhari bin Azlan (PW1). After the close of the defence's case, the High Court acquitted and discharged Anwar of the offence on the ground the DNA analysis done by one of the government chemists (PW5), could not be reconciled with the evidence of two experts called by the defence (DW2) and (DW4), thus casting a reasonable doubt on the prosecution's case. In addition, the trial court also held that since all the body swabs taken from PW1 at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital were individually put into plastic receptacles, labelled and sealed and all the receptacles were then sealed in a common plastic bag (P27) before being handed to the investigating officer, (PW25), the latter's action in later cutting open P27 to relabel the receptacles before sending them to the chemist had compromised the integrity of the samples. The trial judge held that since the court could not be absolutely certain the integrity of the samples had not been compromised before they reached the chemist, it was unsafe to rely on the DNA result obtained from the chemist's tests on the samples; hence there was no evidence to corroborate PW1's evidence on the factum of penetration, an ingredient of the offence. Former research assistant Muhammed Yusoff Rawther was discharged and acquitted by the High Court in Kuala Lumpur on June 12, 2025, of charges involving cannabis trafficking and possession of two imitation firearms. — Bernama pic On the prosecution's appeal, the Court of Appeal (COA) reversed the High Court's findings, convicted Anwar and sentenced him to five years' jail. Anwar appealed to the Federal Court. The prosecution cross appealed for enhancement of the sentence. The host of issues raised by Anwar before the apex revisited matters that were raised before the courts below and included contentions that PW1 was not a credible witness; that his evidence was not corroborated; that there was a break in the chain of custody of the exhibits; that DNA evidence that the appellant's semen/sperm were found on rectal swabs taken from PW1 was unreliable in view of the delay before the samples were tested; and that the COA had failed to consider or evaluate the Anwar's defence of political conspiracy. The last ground was based on the contention that PW1 had, two days before the offence, met with the then Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and on the same evening met with a high-ranking police officer at a hotel; that he then contacted the then Inspector General of Police the following day; that the day following the sodomy, and before lodging a police report, PW1 had met with four other persons which included a senator and a former national sprinter. After lengthy deliberations, the Federal Court dismissed Anwar's appeal and the prosecution's cross-appeal, hence affirming the decision of the COA on conviction and sentence. In short, Anwar was acquitted by the High Court. The acquittal was overturned by the COA. Anwar's conviction was finally affirmed by the Federal Court. It's a long, drawn out process to a finality. Expect the same in the acquittal of Anwar's former political aide Muhammad Yusoff Rawther who on Thursday (June 12) was acquitted and discharged by the High Court of two charges involving drug trafficking and possession of a fake firearm without being called to enter his defence. We recall that Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin and his wife were acquitted and discharged by the High Court from three charges of corruption totalling RM2.8 million. The prosecution appealed to the COA which found merit in the prosecution's appeal. Hence, the couple was ordered to enter their defence. It's still early days but Yusoff deserves his freedom now. * This is the personal opinion of the writer or publication and does not necessarily represent the views of Malay Mail.
