Mass food poisoning at MSU girls' hostel
Panic spread at the university's girls' hostel after scores of students complained of vomiting and diarrhoea after dinner at the SD Hall mess on Tuesday night. A stream of ambulances started taking students to SSG Hospital from about 1.30am on Wednesday morning, leading to chaos at the hostel and the hospital.
SSG Hospital authorities said 103 students were treated and many of them have been discharged. Hospital authorities said the condition of all students, including those who remained admitted, was stable.
"Samples from all students have been collected," said RMO Dr Hitendra Chavan.
Vadodara MP Hemang Joshi rushed to the hospital after the mass food poisoning was reported. Students had been served paneer sabji, kheer, rice and dal at the hostel mess.
On Wednesday, food safety officers of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) inspected the SD Hall mess, while a group of ABVP-linked student leaders gheraoed MSU's in-charge vice-chancellor Professor Dhanesh Patel, demanding action.
"Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, notice has been issued to the contractor as the agency was operating without a licence," a statement from the VMC said. It added that the university furnished two certificates revealing that the hostel mess water tank had last been cleaned on March 28, and pest control actions were last carried out on April 6, 2023.
The VMC team sent 26 samples of raw materials, two of cooked food and six water samples for testing.
"When MSU canteens and mess halls were checked earlier, we found that the operators did not have food licences. We issued notices to such operators and wrote to the university. When university officials give out contracts, they must check that the operators/agencies have the necessary food licences," said a VMC spokesperson.
On Wednesday evening, MSU officials announced that the university had ended the contract for catering services with Shilpa Caterers, due to negligence on the part of the agency which led to severe health issues.
"The agency shall not be considered eligible by the university in the future as well," a statement from the university said.
The question of allowing any contractor to operate without the necessary food license does not arise as it is a pre-requisite," said MSU vice-chancellor professor Dhanesh Patel. "However, the contractor's services have been terminated for negligence that led to such serious health problems to our students and we have also blacklisted the agency."

Punjab FDA flags 1,420 failed food samples in HC compliance report, bans energy drinks near schools
As many as 1,420 food samples out of 11,657 tested in Punjab in 2024–25 failed quality checks, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) disclosed in a compliance report filed before the Punjab and Haryana High Court Monday. Punjab FDA also outlined enforcement and awareness measures taken across the state, including a ban on the sale of energy drinks to children near schools. The action comes in response to a March 4 order passed in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Kanwar Pahul Singh, following the death of a young girl, Manvi, in Patiala in March 2024 after she consumed a birthday cake ordered online. Her death had triggered widespread outrage. FDA's latest compliance report was filed in a related contempt petition, which is listed for hearing on August 19. A key development in the compliance report is a prohibition order issued on April 21, 2025, banning the sale of energy drinks to children, and their sale within 100 metres of schools in rural areas and 50 metres in urban areas. The ban is in effect for one year. The department also reported that inspections of high-risk food businesses are ongoing as per directives from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). 'There is no negligence on the part of state officials,' the FDA told the High Court, adding that the department is 'working day and night to improve the food safety ecosystem across the state.' According to the report signed by the FDA commissioner, 11,657 food samples were collected in 2024–25, of which 1,420 were found to be non-conforming. 'Subsequent appropriate action is being taken as per the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006,' the department stated. In the first quarter of 2025–26, the department lifted hundreds of samples of milk, oils, cereals, spices, sweets, and other commodities for enforcement and surveillance testing. Notably, 1,100 surveillance samples of fruits and vegetables were collected to check for contamination, including artificial ripening and heavy metal residues. Under the Eat Right India movement, the department reported more than 150 certifications awarded to clean street food hubs, mandis, schools, campuses, and places of worship. FDA has also conducted more than 500 awareness camps, 1,692 education programmes, and numerous workshops for food business operators over the past three years. The compliance report has been forwarded to the Registrar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, all designated officers, and the petitioner.

VMC seizes 907.83 kg of single-use plastic
Vijayawada: As part of its intensified drive against single-use plastic, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) seized a total of 907.83 kilograms of single-use plastic and collected Rs 3,45,700 in fines between July 25 and July 31, 2025, in the city. As per the instructions of the VMC Commissioner Dhyanachandra HM, and under the supervision of Chief Medical Health Officer Dr K Arjuna Rao, special enforcement teams were formed to implement the plastic ban. These teams, comprising public health officials, conducted inspections across commercial establishments, targeting the usage and sale of prohibited plastic items. A total of 10 enforcement teams were deployed in three circle office limits and tasked with daily patrols and inspections in their respective zones. They identified and seized non-compliant materials from wholesale and retail outlets and took action as per government rules. In addition to enforcement, the VMC conducted awareness campaigns in its main and zonal offices, aiming to establish plastic-free government premises and encourage public participation in environmental protection. Staff were briefed on the health and ecological hazards posed by single-use plastics, particularly when used to carry hot food. Authorities warned that these plastics release microplastics harmful to human health, contaminate soil and groundwater, and endanger animals and aquatic ecosystems. The Commissioner Dhyanachandra has reiterated that only biodegradable alternatives should be used, and strict penalties will apply for violations. He said the first offense is liable for fine as per legal provisions and the second offense doubles the fine. Third offense results in cancellation of shop license. He urged the traders and residents to cooperate with VMC's mission to make Vijayawada a plastic-free city.

Hospital put on 30-day notice over biomedical waste lapse
Vadodara: The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has directed a city hospital to improve its healthcare waste management within 30 days, after an incident in which biomedical waste from the hospital was found in the Gotri municipal garden. The hospital has been warned that it will face closure and power disconnection if it does not comply. The hospital waste was first spotted on July 21 by visitors to the garden. When the garden department officials found the waste, they informed the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) solid waste department, according to a VMC release. Solid waste officials rushed to the site, confirming the waste originated from Sterling Hospital at Racecourse and included biomedical waste. Hospital representatives also arrived at the garden after the discovery. The waste was placed in a VMC tractor used for garden waste collection. When the tractor entered the garden, it left behind the medical waste bags. Papers bearing the hospital's name were also found with the waste. BJP and Congress leaders visited the site as the matter drew public attention. GPCB has ordered the hospital to improve its healthcare waste systems within 30 days or face strict action, including power disconnection. It has also instructed that no new patients be admitted, and existing patients must be shifted if no improvement is made. Attempts to get the hospital's comment were unsuccessful.
