If your bathroom looks gross, it may be time to fix the caulking or grout.It is somewhat ironic that bathrooms, a space meant for cleaning, are a challenge to keep tidy. As many times as we wipe down the bathroom sink and squeegee the shower doors, sometimes bathrooms can seem constantly dirty.
However, in many cases, the areas of our bathrooms that need a little attention are the ones we are quick to overlook.
We spoke with two cleaning professionals to discover common things that make bathrooms appear dirtier than they actually are, as well as solutions to help you finally make your bathroom look clean.Meet the Expert

It's common knowledge that lighting has a massive impact on the design of a room, but our experts say it can also make or break the appearance of cleanliness.
"Outdated or dirty fixtures can cast mottled light that warps shadows and emphasizes imperfections, even on clean surfaces," says Farook Member, a bathroom design expert and the director at QS Supplies.
If your budget allows, replace your outdated bathroom lighting with modern fixtures. If you're looking for a more affordable way to spruce up the space, Member says swapping out your current bulbs with a warmer LED option (specifically around 2700K) will help your bathroom feel like a spa.

Discolored or Cracked Caulking
Even after a deep clean, sometimes bathtubs still appear dirty. According to Sofia Martinez, the founder and CEO at Sparkly Maid Austin, one of the most common explanations for this issue isn't actually the tub itself, but the caulking around it.
"Once the caulking starts to yellow or crack, it can give the impression of dirt and negligence," she says.
Fortunately, repairing old caulking is easier than you might expect. Martinez suggests using a plastic scraping tool to remove the old caulking, then wiping the area with rubbing alcohol to get rid of residue.
Once the surface has dried, apply a new bead of mold-resistant silicone caulk, smoothing it to finish with a wet finger or the caulk tool. Don't forget to let the caulk cure for at least 24 hours before using the area.
Grimy Light Switch Plates and Door Handles
When it's time to clean the bathroom, we're quick to check off tasks like wiping down countertops and cleaning the toilet bowl.
However, many of us forget to clean high-touch areas like light switches and door handles. Unfortunately, even the cleanest bathroom will still appear dirty if these areas are neglected.
"High-touch areas like these accumulate fingerprints, makeup, and soap scum, and since they don't fall into a regular cleaning routine, they have a tendency to get overlooked," says Member. "Replacing old switch plates or even just wiping them down with a magic eraser takes under a minute and makes the room look newer and better maintained."
Hard Water Buildup
Cloudy hard water stains on your faucets and fixtures are a direct result of high mineral content in the water.
While that explanation may not sound gross, mineral deposits can make your bathroom appear unclean. If you're struggling to get rid of pesky hard water buildup, Martinez has a easy, natural solution.
"Soak a couple of paper towels or cotton rounds in white vinegar and place them directly onto the deposits," says Martinez. "Leave them for around 30 minutes, then, using a soft toothbrush, scrub away the deposits with some baking soda."
Don't forget to rinse away the remaining vinegar and residue and dry thoroughly to prevent more mineral deposits from accumulating.
Stained or Uneven Grout
Like caulking, grout is another material that can become stained or cracked over time. It's not technically "dirty," but it certainly spoils the clean aesthetic.
"Grout is one of those stealthy saboteurs," says Member. "It can be immaculately clean and yet make tile appear dirty if the lines are uneven, cracked, or patchy in color."
For renters, Member says a simple grout pen is a cheap solution for whitening faded spots, but for homeowners, he recommends regrouting areas that get a lot of traffic, such as the shower floor, every few years.
Old, Foggy Mirrors
While you can certainly clean fingerprints and toothpaste splatter off of your bathroom mirror, older mirrors may become distorted, chipped, or splotchy as they age. As a result, the whole room may appear dim and foggy.
A DIY glass cleaner can help, but if you're still struggling to achieve the level of cleanliness you want, you can frame out the mirror with stick-on molding or replace the mirror entirely.
Minor improvements made to a mirror reflect across the whole bathroom, making the space feel lighter and larger.

Tarantula mating season starts soon. Here are the states where the spiders will be most prevalent
A wave of tarantula sightings might occur in the next few months across portions of the U.S. as mating season begins. The secretive spiders are rarely seen – except during mating season. The hairy arachnids that are the size of a baseball will be spotted in the following states: California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Texas, according to CBS Chicago. September and October are prime months to see tens of thousands of adult male tarantulas searching for a female ready to lay eggs in her nest, according to Pinnacles National Park in California. The largest spiders in North America, tarantulas are typically two to three inches long and are covered with thousands of fine hairs ranging in color from tan to dark brown. The spiders are usually out from late evening to early dawn to find a mate. A male tarantula begins his search for a mate when he reaches 8 or 10 years old. Tarantulas are solitary except during mating season, when the male follows the scent of a female tarantula to the receptive female's burrow. The female lines her burrow with silk webbing, waiting to be courted. The male taps one of his legs against the ground to alert the female until she emerges from her burrow. The male and female then participate in a mating dance -- in which the male fends off the female, who wishes to devour him. The death of the male can provide the female with nutrition. If he escapes the female's death dance, he dies within the year, the National Park Service said. They usually reach maturity around 10 years of age. Males die within a year of mating and may be eaten by the female before they mate. Females can live over 20 years, making them one of the spiders with the longest life spans. They can produce eggs for 25 years or more. The term "tarantula" originally referred to a southern European wolf spider called Lycosa tarentula, which was named after the town of Taranto, Italy. At one time, it was believed that the bite of this spider caused tarantism — which led to uncontrollable dancing and weeping, according to Pinnacles. The dance — known as Tarentella — turned into a popular Italian folk dance, and even inspired classical compositions. Tarantulas eat a variety of insects, in addition to snakes and small rodents. Tarantulas are sometimes eaten by lizards, snakes, birds and tarantula hawks, according to Pinnacles. Their bites can cause a painful reaction, with some comparing it to a bee sting. But tarantulas are usually gentle and rarely use their fangs — except to catch prey. Or if they are provoked. If alarmed, a tarantula will raise its front legs and abdomen to look aggressive, and they may also release stinging hairs from their abdomen, which irritate the skin. They can also jump up to two feet, according to CBS Chicago. If you spot a tarantula, take time to observe its behavior and body, according to the National Park Service. "Contrary to appearance and reputation, the tarantula is a timid creature and will not bite human beings unless seriously provoked," the NPS says.

My high-school senior moved in with my 77-year-old mom. The unconventional arrangement has benefited all of us.
When my son was a senior in high school, he chose to move in with my 77-year-old mom. He doesn't have to worry about paying rent in our expensive city, and he's gained independence. My mom likes having help with chores, and his moving out has been good for him and our relationship. When I got divorced, my two children and I moved back to the house I owned before I was married, which we'd kept as a rental property. At 800 square feet, the two-bedroom cottage is ideal for two people, but it's a tight squeeze for three. My 13-year-old son got the smaller bedroom, while my 9-year-old daughter and I shared the larger one. By the time my son was in high school and my daughter in middle school, they both desperately wanted their own space and more independence. However, we live in Denver, one of the most expensive cities in the US. Upgrading to a bigger home wasn't an option — and my son couldn't afford his car and rent for his own place on the income from his part-time lifeguarding job. So, he chose to move in with my 77-year-old mother during his senior year of high school. Now, he's got more independence without the burden of rent At my mom's house, my son has a spacious bedroom with a full bath in her finished basement, which includes a laundry, gym, and living room. By living with his grandmother, he's able to avoid paying rent (and save money) while still having the independence that comes with having his own space. When he moved in, my mom laid out clear rules and expectations of what he needed to help with around the house. So far, he's been making dinner for her a few nights a week and helping with cleaning and other items on her to-do list. It's been a great lesson in independence for him, and it's been nice for my mom to have extra help around the house. The move has also been beneficial to my relationship with my son. We set intentional boundaries that could bridge living at home and being 100% independent. He doesn't have to coordinate all of his plans with me anymore, but he's also responsible for knowing what needs to be done with his schoolwork and housework and making it happen. Now, he manages his schedule so he sees his friends plenty — and I'm no longer stressing about nagging him about homework and chores. My son has also matured in a way that's really surprised me After a couple of months of this living arrangement, a new confidence emerged in my son's personality and attitude. As he got closer to graduation, he hit his stride with finishing school, working, saving money, and managing his household responsibilities. Over several weeks, we were also able to have a lot of mature conversations about what he thought his future would look like. Through high school, my son was unsure about attending college — he'd simply say he didn't know what he'd major in and didn't want to take out loans for tuition. After a few months of his newfound independence, though, he was able to share his anxieties about college with me with more clarity and detail and less apathy. Ultimately, he's decided to attend an affordable local community college in the fall and transfer to a university next year. I'm pleasantly surprised by how he was able to make such an important, mature choice on his own. All in all, this unconventional living situation has been great Even though this living arrangement is unconventional, it's been a game changer for all of us. My son has gained so much independence. We've also improved our relationship, taking space as needed and coming together for meaningful conversations about his future. And, of course, it's been helpful for my mom on a practical level. Based on this experience, I'd encourage parents to think outside the box when it comes to living arrangements that an older teen might benefit from. My son has been thriving after having a taste of what it means to live on his own as an adult — and, at my house, my daughter is thrilled to finally have her own space to decorate.
