End of Oxford's tour of discovery

BBC News15-07-2025
Both of Oxford's matches in Indonesia were interrupted – the first by floodlight failure and the second by monsoon rain of epic proportions. The weather in the final against Thai side Port FC undoubtedly contributed to the outcome – Port's winner came during the deluge. Had it been Elliott Moore lifting the trophy, not his beaming counterpart, the initial assessment of the trip would, I am sure, be largely positive. Even when results don't really matter, they kind of do.United have done a lot right out here, even making kids in an orphanage smile with a mass kick-about. Those who think footballers are all cynical should have seen this group of players there. They won't forget those children and I applaud their private actions after the visit. If you drew up a list of EFL football managers past and present that you might expect to see being paraded on an imitation lion carried by four men as part of a local custom…Gary Rowett would be a long way down it. He was respectful and didn't refuse when invited to climb aboard at a news conference. He styled it out and by doing so he has gone up in most people's expectations. The team will have got over the defeat by Port almost before they had dried out. More minutes in the legs, some game-time for youth team products. Mark Harris will be pleased with his golden boot for being tournament top scorer.Oxford's rise to the Championship – and staying there - has been in no small part because of the funding from Erick Thohir and others in South East Asia. The latest growing pains are maybe being felt by the team and coaching staff more than the supporters. A 7,000-mile trip in pre-season is probably not the absolutely ideal preparation for the new season, but there is a reason big clubs make these trips, even though they're often derided. This was a tour of discovery for those who travelled at relatively short notice to support the team, but it was too for Oxford United itself - a tentative exploration of a potentially massive market, where no particular European team appears to have a stranglehold. But the gap between the richest and poorest is a chasm, and monetarising Oxford's new found popularity will be a challenge in Indonesia. They missed out on £250,000 of prize money when they lost the final, too. Will the injuries picked up prove debilitating as the Championship season opens? Has United's reputation been significantly enhanced? Will they be able to tap into this emerging economy? We only know the true value – or cost - of the trip further down the line.United invested a lot in this trip – not financially, the first class travel and accommodation was all laid on - but in terms of energy and emotion. I am sure there will be a fierce internal debate about whether it should 'one and done' for such a tour, or whether it would be folly not to try and learn from - and build on - what has been achieved here this time…. and, as they say in football, 'go again'.You can find part one of Jerome Sale's tour recap below.

Brighton's Enciso to join Strasbourg

Strasbourg are closing in on a move worth a total of £17.3m for Brighton forward Julio Enciso, with a view that he will play for Chelsea after a year in France. The 21-year-old is expected to finalise terms over a contract in the coming days with Brighton including a sell-on clause in the deal. Strasbourg are linked to Chelsea through their BlueCo ownership, led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, with the move for the Paraguay international potentially the most significant since the £65.2m takeover in 2023. There are significant connections between Chelsea and Strasbourg, who are managed by Englishman Liam Rosenior, with goalkeeper Mike Penders, Kendry Paez and Mamadou Sarr all on loan from Stamford have also signed multiple players from Chelsea, including Ishe Samuels-Smith, Mathis Amougou and Diego Moreira in the last two seasons while there is a host of ex-Premier League talent at the club from former Brighton defender Valentin Barco and former Southampton forward Sekou Alcase club qualified for the Conference League last season through a seventh-placed finish. Meanwhile, Enciso leaves Brighton having been left out of the squad for the opening day draw against Fulham. Enciso scored five goals for the Seagulls and spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town.

Marseille target move for Liverpool defender, with Reds aiming to further boost £217m made from sales this summer

Marseille are the latest club to show interest in Liverpool 's Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas. The Reds have already made an impressive £217million from player sales during a summer of extraordinary change at the club. It remains to be seen what kind of fee would be demanded for Tsimikas, who has spent five years at Anfield as back-up to Andy Robertson. But French giants Marseille are interested in signing the 29-year-old, who is regarded as a stylistic fit for Roberto De Zerbi 's system. Leeds previously held an interest, though that has cooled, while Nottingham Forest are also keeping tabs on him. Tsimikas was left out of the matchday squad for Liverpool's Community Shield defeat by Crystal Palace. And he suffered the same fate for the Premier League opener, when Arne Slot opted to omit him from the group again. Given the signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, Tsimikas is now behind the new first choice and Robertson. Knowing his game time will be hugely limited, Tsimikas appears likely to enter the next chapter of his career away from Merseyside. Tsimikas, who is affectionately known as the 'Greek Scouser' joined Liverpool for a fee of around £11.7m from Olympiacos in 2020. Perhaps his most famous moment in a Liverpool shirt was when he helped Liverpool achieve FA Cup glory in 2022, slotting the decisive penalty during Liverpool's final against Chelsea. He was an able understudy to Robertson last term and if that season was indeed to be his last, the left-back will be fondly remembered by fans and team-mates alike. Meanwhile, Marseille have put both Jonathan Rowe and Adrien Rabiot up for sale after a dressing room bust-up. The pair came to blows after De Zerbi's men lost to 10-man Rennes on the opening weekend of Ligue 1. Quentin Merlin has already departed Marseille, replacing Adrien Truffert at Rennes, so there is a need for reinforcements at the back and Tsimikas could fit the bill.

Celtic's lack of deals 'not my decision'

Manager Brendan Rodgers insists the failure to strengthen Celtic's squad for their Champions League play off with Kairat was "not my decision" and concedes that he has to "accept where it's at".The Scottish champions - heavy favourites to progress - were listless in being held to a goalless draw by their Kazakhstan must travel more than 3,500 miles for next Tuesday's second leg just short of the Chinese border, knowing that they need a far better showing if they are to return to the top table of continental competition this have recruited seven players this summer, paying fees for Benjamin Nygren, Hayato Inamura, Shin Yamada and Callum Osmand, with Kieran Tierney and Ross Doohan arriving on frees and Jahmai Simpson-Pusey on loan. Only Nygren and Tierney started on Wednesday, while the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Kyogo Furuhashi who starred in the Champions League last term have been sold and not replaced, while Jota is out injured long term."We need to improve the squad," Rodgers said. "There's been clarity around that for a long time. Supporters see that. Hopefully between now and the end of the season, the club will get that and that will support us."It's not my decision in the end. I can prepare the players that are here. We are all clear on where we need to improve, and for whatever reason we haven't been able to do that."We're in this position, we have to accept that and not dwell on it, and try and come through it."There's only so many ways that I can dress up that we don't have the players here. "It was pretty clear. You don't need to look into the future too far. You know these games are tough and you want to have players in as quick as you can to tackle these situations. It is what it is. I have to accept where it's at."
