Former Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen to retire at end of the season
BRUSSELS (AP) — Former Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen will retire from all soccer at the end of the season.
The 37-year-old Vertonghen, a former Tottenham player who holds the record for the most appearances (157) with Belgium, had already retired from international soccer after the 2024 European Championship.
'In recent weeks it has become clear to me that these will be my last games,' the Anderlecht captain said Tuesday. 'This is by no means an easy decision, but it is the right one. I have noticed that it is becoming more and more difficult to prepare myself physically for training sessions and matches and to show myself as the player I want to be. Not only towards the fans and my fellow players, but also towards myself. That is why I will be stopping after this season.'
Vertonghen also played for Ajax and Benfica in a career spanning more than 18 years.
He played for Tottenham in the 2019 Champions League final — won by Liverpool — and was part of Belgium's so-called Golden Generation, helping his country to qualify for three consecutive World Cups. Belgium finished third at the 2018 tournament in Russia.
Anderlecht finished the regular season in fourth place and qualified for the title playoffs. Anderlecht will also play in the Belgian Cup final against Club Brugge.
'I'm going to give it my all for the last 11 games and hopefully experience a few more great moments with the fans and my teammates,' Vertonghen said.

Zinchenko scores off the bench to help Ukraine defeat New Zealand at Canadian Shield
TORONTO - Substitute Oleksandr Zinchenko scored in the 75th minute to lift Ukraine to a 2-1 win over New Zealand on Tuesday at the Canadian Shield Tournament. The Arsenal fullback/midfielder had been on the pitch less than a minute when he acrobatically swept Oleksandr Martyniuk's cross past New Zealand goalkeeper Max Crocombe. Zinchenko, Ukraine's Footballer of the Year in 2019, joined Arsenal from Manchester City in July 2022 in a 30-million-pound ($55.4-million) transfer. The 28-year-old has been linked to a move to AC Milan in recent days. Oleksiy Hutsuliak also scored for Ukraine. Marko Stamenic replied for New Zealand in a game that saw tempers flare as the clock wound down. New Zealand, ranked 86th in the world, upset No. 41 Ivory Coast 1-0 on Saturday. No. 25 Ukraine lost 4-2 to No. 30 Canada. The Canadians faced Ivory Coast in the late game at BMO Field. Ukraine had more of the ball but failed to take advantage Tuesday. That changed in the 54th minute when Hutsuliak, from the edge of the penalty box, beat Crocombe with a left-footed shot that went through a New Zealand defender's legs. Marko Stamenic replied in the 59th minute off a New Zealand corner. The ball came to defender Michael Boxall who headed it in front of goal to Stamenic, whose header beat Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, Thibaut Courtois' backup at Real Madrid. Ukraine began to threaten with crosses in the first half. And the six-foot-four Crocombe, who plays in England's third tier for Burton Albion, had to make a spectacular reflex save to deny Hutsuliak's header in the 15th minute. Crocombe had to be agile again in the 31st minute, stopping Oleksandr Pikhalonok from a tight angle. And the All Whites 'keeper was up to the task again in the 49th minute, blocking a shot after a pinball-like sequence following a Ukraine free kick. New Zealand brought on star forward Chris Wood, who has scored 89 goals for England's Nottingham Forest, in the 80th minute. The Toronto tournament is the first action for New Zealand since punching its ticket to the World Cup with a 3-0 win over No. 151 New Caledonia in the Oceania Football Confederation qualifying final in March at Auckland's Eden Park. New Zealand previously took part in the 1982 and 2010 World Cups, failing to get out of the group stage on both occasions. The famous win over New Caledonia came some 33 months after New Zealand lost 1-0 to Costa Rica in an intercontinental playoff in Doha, Qatar, for the final berth at the 2022 World Cup. Ukraine coach Serhiy Rebrov made nine changes to the starting lineup that lost to Canada. New Zealand made three changes with Boxall among those slotting in. As they did Saturday, the Ukrainian players came out with the Ukraine flag draped over their shoulders. Many of their supporters also brought flags. The Ukraine players, who have not played an international match at home since Russia invaded in February 2022, did a lap around the stadium after the final whistle to applaud their fans. 'Last night, Kyiv endured one of the most brutal attacks since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. In just a few days between two matches, Ukraine was hit 1,088 times by airstrikes,' the Ukrainian Association of Football said in a social media post during the first half. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 10, 2025.

Chile loses at Bolivia and will miss third straight World Cup
Chile's players react after losing to Bolivia in a qualifying soccer match for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in El Alto, Bolivia, Tuesday, June 10, 2025. (AP Photo/Juan Karita) Chile will miss its third straight World Cup after losing 2-0 at Bolivia on Tuesday to remain last in South America's 10-team round-robin competition. Bolivia kept its hopes alive for an inter-continental playoff spot in a bid to reach the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Advertisement The top six teams in South American qualifying will secure direct berths in the World Cup. Defending champion Argentina has already qualified. Chile's golden generation won two Copa America titles — in 2015 and '16 — but is out of contention for next summer's expanded 48-team tournament. 'Sad, I am feeling bad. Never lived something like this. We have to ask people to forgive us,' veteran Chile striker Alexis Sánchez said after the match. 'We have to keep working. There's change already, the golden generation is buried, I am the only one left." Bolivia scored the first with Miguel Terceros in the fifth minute and added a second in the 90th with Enzo Monteiro at the 4,150-meter high El Alto Stadium, outside La Paz. Advertisement The hosts now have 17 points to put pressure on Venezuela, which has 18 and will play later at Uruguay. Both are fighting for seventh place, which secures the inter-continental playoff spot. Sixth-place Colombia has 21 points. Ecuador can clinch its spot with a win later at Peru. Brazil and Paraguay, who will clash in Sao Paulo, can also book their tickets if they win and Venezuela loses in Montevideo. Also on Tuesday, Argentina hosts Colombia. Bolivia's future will be decided in September at Colombia and at home against Brazil. ___ AP soccer:

FIFA's pitch to Club World Cup ticket buyers despite slow sales: Be part of soccer history
FIFA's pitch to Club World Cup ticket buyers despite slow sales: Be part of soccer history Show Caption Hide Caption Why Real Madrid is heavy favorite to win FIFA Club World Cup Safid Deen and Seth Vertelney explain why Real Madrid look like a safe bet to hoist the FIFA Club World Cup trophy when all is said and done. Sports Seriously CORAL GABLES, FL — FIFA president Gianni Infantino believes the Club World Cup opener with Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Egpytian side Al Ahly at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, June 14 will be 'full' and 'packed' with fans. Infantino didn't quite say sell out. But he's taking news of slow ticket sales in stride. Although ticket sales have not met FIFA's expectations in the final week before the new tournament begins, Infantino thinks soccer fans in the United States should take advantage of the opportunity to watch 32 of the best soccer club teams in the world in the 11 cities where matches will be played this summer. 'I think this is the important element that people have to really capture now – be part of history,' Infantino said during a Club World Cup event at FIFA's headquarters near Miami on May 10. 'Football is such an important sport all over the world. We'll have billions of people watching this Club World Cup from home, who would love to come and to attend. And we'll have millions who are here, and who will be able to be part of this very first FIFA Club World Cup, which will enter into history. So, I think it's great.' Some Club World Cup ticket prices have been lowered significantly thanks to dynamic pricing – a mechanism used to lower or raise ticket prices based on demand. The cheapest tickets to half of the Club World Cup group stage matches (24 of 48) are under $36 all-in with fees before taxes. FIFA has a $2 billion revenue target it expects to generate from the Club World Cup – which includes $1 billion already paid by DAZN to live stream all 63 matches for free on their website and app, and another $500 million in marketing rights. The other $500 million will come from hospitality rights and ticket sales. Along with the $1 billion prize pool that will be paid by FIFA and divided among the 32 Club World Cup teams, FIFA is targeting to make $250 million in solidarity payments to other clubs and leagues around the world to further the game. FIFA also plans to pay each host city $1 million to support community soccer projects in the future. When FIFA announced its unprecedented prize pool for the Club World Cup in March, it also said it will not retain any profits from the tournament. While previous editions of the Club World Cup predominantly featured seven teams, FIFA hopes the expanded 2025 Club World Cup sets a new standard for club soccer globally and can become a tournament held every four years one year before World Cups. 'As for every new venture that anyone tries to create in the world, there are always discussions that you never really know what will happen. … For us, the important element is to fill the stadiums, to give opportunities to people to come,' Infantino said. 'We were lucky enough – and this is also something that we did not expect in that measure – that we got great attention from sponsors and brokers broadcasters so that when it comes to revenues, everything is perfectly secured.' The Club World Cup will host matches in Atlanta, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, Nashville, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Seattle and Washington D.C. The final is July 13 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Wednesday marks one year until the next World Cup begins on June 11, 2026. That event will be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The biggest stories, every morning. Stay up-to-date on all the key sports developments by subscribing to USA TODAY Sports' newsletter.
