
RoofBuddy, fronted by The Bachelor's Art Green, faces home owner claims of ‘reckless' activity
He said he felt that he had been chased aggressively for a deposit and progress payment but once that was made, there was no accountability. 'Once our job was 'complete' they did not send an independent quality assessor to check the quality of the work as advertised on their social media platforms.'
Within six months, the product started to deteriorate and even with a third coat, it did not improve.
The roof was still leaking and had destroyed the ceiling in the house's office, Waaka said. He was working with his insurance company to determine what he could claim.
Waaka said he did not want RoofBuddy involved with the fix now because in his opinion they had had been 'reckless'. He had been told he would need a full reroof, which could cost up to $40,000.
He said he felt that the quotes offered for reroofing through the portal were inflated to make the membrane look like the best option. Waaka said, since he posted about his problem online, he had received messages from a number of other people who had been affected.
Roofing Association of New Zealand chief executive Luke Boustridge said he was 'deeply concerned' by the claims about RoofBuddy. It is not a member of the association.
'We've received a number of calls and emails from concerned homeowners and roofing professionals in recent weeks, and we've seen the same emerging on social media. We can't investigate non-members, but we are taking the wider implications seriously. This is not just about one company - this is about protecting the public and restoring trust in the roofing profession.'
He said when confidence in roofing services was undermined it affected the whole industry.
He said the licensed building practitioner scheme, which requires people to be licensed to carry out work on homes, did not apply to those involved in residential reroofing.
'Even though re-roofing represents a significant portion of the work happening on Kiwi homes. That's something we believe urgently needs to change. We've long advocated for the LBP scheme to be expanded to include all roofing work, not just new builds or structural components. The risks to safety, durability, and consumer confidence are just as high - if not higher - when re-roofing is done poorly.
'Until those regulations catch up, consumers remain exposed.'
Green referred queries to RoofBuddy chief executive James Logan.
Logan said his organisation had no influence on pricing submitted by service providers on its platform.
He said it was not unreasonable that the quote to reroof Waaka's house was high.
'Our advice was given that re-roofing was the most suitable option for the property. Given the nature of the substrate …and the brittle quality of the terracotta tiles along with the fact that house had been relocated; it was advised that re-roofing would be the best option of the two presented, however, the customer was budget constrained and wished to proceed with the restoration quote from Life Time Roofing.'
He said the QA check had not yet been done because the work had not been completed by Life Time to the quoted specifications.
'Without consulting us, Life Time Roofing were able to persuade the customer to pay their final invoice despite the absence of our QA sign off. We strongly advise all our customers against this action.'
Logan said mechanical repairs and carpentry were overlooked and not attended, leaving the structure vulnerable to water ingress.
'Secondly correct preparation, priming and application processes were not followed and this caused an adhesion problem with the membrane, resulting in the product peeling and blistering. These issues were clearly evident and my efforts subsequently had been directed to compel Life Time Roofing to return to the property and complete the mechanical repairs, carpentry requirements and correctly reapply the membrane coating. Once this had been done we were standing by to complete the QA check.'
Logan said he took responsibility for not following up 'diligently enough' to ensure the matter had been dealt with and not making a direct intervention sooner under RoofBuddy's customer warranties.
'RoofBuddy's customer warranties are the provisions under which we ensure the quoted works are completed at the quoted price and those protections should have been activated much sooner. Those are the protections I'm attempting to activate in the customer's favour now.'
Alex Anderson, director at Life Time Roofing, said his organisation took full responsibility for the experience.
'Regardless of the contributing factors, we understand that expectations were not met, and that the client has been left feeling unsupported. That is not in line with the values we stand for, and I want to be clear that we are committed to making things right.
'We had a date booked to return to site on 16 April, and while we were prepared to carry out the required remedial work, we understand and respect the client's current decision to pause further site access while their insurance process is under way. We will remain available and ready to return as soon as that process allows.
'In our commitment to supporting the client, Life Time Roofing has already covered the full replacement of the ceiling, along with associated plastering and painting, in the only affected room. This work was completed at no cost to the client as a gesture of goodwill, aimed at restoring comfort and livability while a long-term solution is arranged.
'We are also working closely with RoofBuddy to ensure the client receives a full and lasting resolution. We're aligned in our desire to deliver the best possible outcome here and are both willing to contribute toward that. Life Time Roofing is prepared to contribute substantially toward whatever remedy Ed and his family determine is the most suitable path forward. We want to see this resolved in a way that restores both their home and their peace of mind.'
He said Life Time Roofing no longer had a working relationship with RoofBuddy.

Good business sense using consumer psychology. Photo / Getty Images Every city has its signatures. In Ho Chi Minh City it was someone pointing at my sneakers and offering to clean them. In Da Nang it was, 'Taxi, sir?' and in Hội An it's been, 'Want a boat ride?' We have resolutely fought off all efforts to part us from our money. Well, most efforts. It was our first afternoon in Hội An, a historical port city in central Vietnam, home to a Unesco world-heritage ancient town. We'd gone in search of a particular tailor, recommended to us by our hotel and breathless English tourists on TikTok. At the first street corner, I got out my phone to check directions, and 15 minutes later we were at a completely different tailor, having been expertly waylaid by one of their 'scouts', who'd seen us and asked if she could offer directions … The next day we did a lantern-making class at our hotel, led by the ever-patient tutor, Moon. Moon asked us what we had planned and made a few recommendations, including one for dinner at the Citadel restaurant at which a friend of hers worked. That evening, we followed her advice and had a frankly delightful evening marked by fantastic food, an absolutely lovely waitress, Anna, and regular check-ins from Gray, the manager (who also happens to be a Kiwi). As with every restaurant we visited, we had to force ourselves to sit back and enjoy the experience; at no point did we ever feel like we had to rush to finish, pay, and give up our table to the next customer. Not like, ahem, at home in Wellington. What do these latter examples have in common? Bloody good business sense based on friendliness and strategic use of consumer psychology. Having recently hosted friends visiting Wellington from overseas, my heart was warmed by hearing them say how friendly New Zealanders are, but it's a step change to Vietnamese hospitality. For example, first and last impressions count or, in technical terms, primacy and recency. We make impressions incredibly quickly and largely unconsciously, and research shows that, while we care deeply about how good the chef is, we have to be drawn in first to find out. That can hang entirely on the rapport we sense from our first encounter. When we left the restaurant, Anna farewelled us by our names (which she remembered several days later when we happened to pass by). That's a personal touch that leaves a positive impression. Ever started to feel tense because wait staff check in on you a little too frequently? Or neglected because they don't check in at all? That's another tricky balance, and one that requires a bit of intuition about the best time to stop by. Another thing Citadel did well, but almost every other restaurant we ate at didn't, was a sensibly curated set of options. Ever eaten at the American restaurant chain The Cheesecake Factory? The menu runs to more than 200 items and around 20 pages. It is frankly exhausting. You get to a point where you no longer care what you order, you just want to make it stop. Psychology researchers Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper are probably best associated with the notion of this 'paradox of choice'. In a particularly well-known experiment they showed that people may be more likely to head over to a counter offering 24 types of jam than a counter with only six, but people were 10 times more likely to buy jam when the number of types available was reduced from 24 to six. Why? Because what if you make the wrong choice? The more choices, the harder the decision, and the greater the likelihood of buyer's remorse. So in keeping with this research, we broke our holiday rule and went back to the Citadel and its more limited number of choices a second time.

Of all of the above, it's the ban that's going to give them ongoing headaches. On the face of it, it's great retail politics. Everyone hates being stung 2% for using the credit card at the sushi shop. But there will be consequences. The surcharge is there because it costs to use your credit card. Someone has to pay for it. Either you or the retailer. Currently, it's you in the form of the surcharge. After the ban, it'll be the retailer. And we're talking a lot of money. Interchange fees alone – the fees Visa and Mastercard charge – suck nearly $1 billion out of NZ businesses a year. Add what retail banks charge on top of that and we're talking several billion apparently. One retailer reckons they were paying $2500 a month just in merchant fees. That's $30,000 a year. They realised they were basically subsidising everyone's credit card loyalty schemes. So, they introduced the surcharge. No savvy small or medium-sized retailer will suck up a cost like that. If they can't get that back through a surcharge, they'll get it back by upping the price on products. So, while the Government can sell the story that they're saving consumers money through the ban, they're not. Pity the poor travel agents especially. Let's say they book flights to London for a family of four at the cost of $15,000. If the family put it on the credit card, which most of us would do, there is a $225 merchant fee. Once the ban kicks in, the travel agent will essentially be helping the family pay for their holiday. So, you can see why retailers are up in arms. They're so angry they've managed to mobilise the country's chambers of commerce into banding together in a statement criticising the ban. Their point is a fair one: the Government should really be dealing with the source of the problem, which is banks and credit card companies charging too much for a basic service. Ministers choosing to beat up on Kiwi retailers instead of sorting out big foreign bankers is bizarre. Even more so because SME owners are traditionally National Party and right-leaning voters. The Government is burning its own support base here. Which brings us to the weirdness of this. It should have been entirely predictable that this would blow back badly. So, why did they do it? Are they so desperate to get good coverage that they take any half-baked idea pitched at them by a minister at the weekend to announce the following Monday? Did they run out of time to interrogate the idea before announcing it? Or did they anticipate all the problems but ignore them in their desperation to get a cost-of-living announcement out? It also begs the question, why are they so panicked? The answer is probably that it's not just the Government's vibe that has shifted. It's the country's vibe too. It's the middle of this Government's term and the middle of winter and the tail end of a very long and hard recession. The goodwill towards the coalition Government is suddenly depleting. It's possibly recoverable. Summer and an economic recovery should improve things again. But even when we're warm and flush, it won't stop the Government stuffing things up itself if it keeps making weird announcements like this. Watch now for how they get out of this. And they'll have to. They can't be doing this to their own voter base just months out from next year's election.

Waste-to-power venture gains global recognition
Ecogas — a joint venture between Central Otago's Pioneer Energy Group and Ecostock Ltd — has received global recognition, winning AD Hero of the Year at the 2025 Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Industry Awards in the United Kingdom. The awards, held during the World Biogas Summit and Expo in Birmingham, recognised global excellence in the anaerobic digestion and biogas sector. More than 400 people attended the event hosted by the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) and the World Biogas Association. Pioneer Energy ventured into the waste-to-energy sector through a partnership with Ecostock Ltd to form Ecogas. In 2022, the business commissioned its first site in Reporoa, in the central North Island, New Zealand's first and only commercial-scale anaerobic digestion facility. Since opening, the facility has diverted more than 125,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfill, generating renewable natural gas and biofertiliser. Last year, Ecogas became the first company to inject generating renewable natural gas into New Zealand's national gas infrastructure, marking a major milestone in the country's transition to renewable energy. It has secured a contract with the Christchurch City Council to build a second food waste-to-bioenergy facility. The award was accepted by Andrew Fisher, managing director of Eco Stock Supplies and a founding partner in Ecogas, who attended the ceremony in Birmingham and said he was "super proud" to represent Ecogas and New Zealand on the global stage. Pioneer Energy Group and Ecogas chief executive Peter McClean said the company's success had only been possible through strong partnerships and a shared vision to divert organic waste from landfill and create lasting value for New Zealand. "We championed this technology in a highly competitive market with limited policy mandates or financial incentives. We are incredibly grateful to our partners, councils, and commercial customers who have supported us on this journey," he said. Jeffrey Clarke, chief executive of New Zealand's gas sector body, GasNZ, welcomed Ecogas's win, saying he was not at all surprised. "What they have achieved is nothing short of remarkable. Through vision, persistence and a passion to do what is right, Ecogas has led a collaboration of partners who have quite literally turned Kiwi waste into treasure. "Where others saw rubbish destined for landfill, Ecogas saw opportunity. They are converting the energy from food scraps and other organic waste into much-needed gas to power thousands of homes, generating heat and bioCO2 that significantly boosts greenhouse crop production. "All nutrients are being captured to make rich biofertiliser to support Kiwi farmers. Communities should be replicating Ecogas's Reporoa plant all over New Zealand to help solve our energy shortfall, reduce GHG emissions, reduce dependency on fertiliser imports, and so much more." Earlier this year, Ecogas was also recognised at home, winning the 2025 WasteMINZ Award for excellence in best resource or value recovery initiative. — Allied Media
