New Savannah speed limits are in effect, nearly 100 streets
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – New speed limits are in effect on nearly 100 streets throughout Savannah, and city leaders said it is for a good reason.
Since February, city crews have installed over 400 updated speed limit signs at more than 100 street segments. The changes were approved by city council last year, and the city has partnered with the Georgia Department of Transportation.
'Lowering speed limits is a part of the city's Vision Zero strategy,' Savannah Mayor Van Johnson said. 'Vision Zero, which we adopted in 2022, is our initiative aimed at eliminating all pedestrian traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy and equitable mobility.'
WSAV spoke with Savannah resident Marilyn Hartness, who enjoys her daily walks, and she said she appreciates the effort.
'I do think it will help everyone feel safer,' Hartness said. 'And I know that people who are driving their cars are trying to be very attentive to the different motions that are made on the side of the road by the pedestrian.'
Mayor Johnson told WSAV high speeds kill, and lower speeds save lives.
'According to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, a vehicle, traveling at 42 miles per hour has a 50% chance of causing a fatality if a pedestrian is hit at 23 miles an hour,' Johnson said. 'The chance of an accident goes down to 10%. So, the data is there.'
Hartness said, 'I've always liked the nickname 'Slow Vanna. So, let's just see if this helps us all appreciate what we have around us. The beauty.'
The city said a 30-day grace period is in effect to give drivers time to adjust. After that, the Savannah Police Department will start issuing tickets.

Motorcylist seriously injured in crash near major I-15 exit in Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY () — A motorcyclist suffered serious injuries after being involved in a crash on 300 West and 600 South in Salt Lake City on Wednesday morning. The Salt Lake City Police Department on social media shortly after 8 a.m. on June 11. It is currently unclear when the intersection at 600 South and 300 West will reopen, but investigators expect it to be closed for 'several hours.' Utahns on their morning commute into Salt Lake City are advised to use alternate routes. Northbound traffic from I-15 can take the 1300 South exit or the West Temple exit to 900 South. The 400 South exit is also available to northbound drivers for those carpooling or with an HOV Express Lane pass. This is a developing story. Pittsburgh reports decline in traffic crashes, deaths, serious injuries for fourth year in a row
The City of Pittsburgh reports a decline in traffic crashes, deaths and serious injuries on city streets for the fourth year in a row. Latest data from the Pennsylvania Crash Information Tool shows that total crashes on city and state-owned roadways in Pittsburgh decreased 17 percent in 2024, compared to 2023. City-owned streets alone have had over 700 fewer crashes compared to 2021, a spokesperson says. Meanwhile, crashes statewide have increased by .35 percent. Deaths and serious injuries from crashes on city streets have steadily declined over the past three years, the spokesperson says. While crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists fell by 20 percent from 2024, these crashes are disproportionately fatal, the spokesperson says. The fourth year of declining incidents is being considered a major milestone in the city's Vision Zero initiative to end traffic fatalities and serious injuries. 'In Pittsburgh, we believe every life matters — no one should die just trying to get where they need to go," said Mayor Ed Gainey. 'For the fourth year in a row, crashes, injuries, and fatalities are down. That's no accident — it's because we've made safety a priority, especially for our most vulnerable neighbors. But we're not done. High-severity crashes are still hitting the same streets and the same communities. That's why we're doubling down — to make sure every Pittsburgher, in every neighborhood, can walk, bike, or drive without fear. This is about equity, justice, and saving lives.' In 2024, the Gainey administration increased the city's traffic calming budget by 136 percent to about $1.08 million, the spokesperson says. Additionally, over 50 safety and accessibility projects are planned in the city this year, with many targeting high-injury, low-income and high-pedestrian areas. Middletown Police installing speed cameras on 2 streets
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — The Middletown Police Department is installing speed cameras on Washington Street and Camp Street, the department said in a release Monday. This is part of the city's initiative to enhance road safety and reduce speeding. The cameras are now active, recording the eastbound and westbound lanes of both streets. During this time, motorists who exceed the posted speed limit will receive warning notices instead of citations. 'The deployment of these cameras aligns with Middletown's broader traffic safety goals and supports the City's Safe Streets and Vision Zero initiatives, strategies dedicated to eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries,' said the release.
