GDOT asking for public feedback on proposed I-16 widening
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has recently proposed a widening of Interstate 16. According to GDOT, the proposed project would widen I-16 from two to three lanes eastbound and westbound between I-95 and (SR) 67 in Bulloch, Bryan, Effingham, and Chatham counties. As part of the widening, 20 bridges in 10 locations will also be widened or replaced. The proposed project will improve existing substandard pavement conditions within the I-16 corridor. GDOT is asking for comments on the proposed I-16 Widening project (P.I. 0020168 and 0020739) as part of the Public Information Open House (PHOH) comment period. The public is asked to review and submit comments on any aspect of the project. You can learn more about the proposed plan on GDOT's website. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Dash cam footage captures dramatic hit-and-run on I-85
The Brief Coweta County deputies are searching for the driver of a semi-truck who hit a motorist's car on Interstate-85 and knocked the vehicle off the road. The accident was captured on driver Bill Eidson's dash camera, which shows the collision and his car skidding off the highway onto the shoulder. Eidson was unhurt, but his car was totaled. COWETA COUNTY, Ga. - Deputies are investigating a hit-and-run accident that knocked a driver's car off the interstate. They say a truck driver fled that scene without helping or even calling 911. What we know Bill Eidson was heading home to Hogansville from Atlanta. He'd been at a corporate function when a semi-truck came up from behind and hit his car so hard that it sent him skidding off the highway. But that trucker kept going. It was all captured on Eidson's dash cam in his car. The sound is Eidson's radio playing music and then a loud crunch and the squealing of his tires as his car careens off the roadway. The video shows the complete sequence of events. "It was scary," he said. "At first I thought I had had a blowout because all I heard was a boom and a big crash." He says he didn't know until later that something had hit him and it was all recorded on his dash camera. Eidson says his car, a 2017 Ford Fusion, is totaled. He was unhurt. It happened on May 21, at around 9:15 p.m. Edison was traveling near the Collingsworth Road exit on Interstate 85. An enhanced view of the rear-facing camera saw the cab of the truck, and it appeared there was no trailer. The blinker is on, suggesting the truck was changing lanes and the driver might not have seen Eidson's car. Coweta County sheriff's deputies are working to identify the truck and driver. But they need the public's help. Despite the fact the accident was caught on camera, no view provides enough clarity to see identifying marks. Luck was with Eidson though. He says he travels that road every day for work and the Georgia Department of Transportation had recently cleared trees on the I-85 shoulder at that exit. He might have gone head-on into a tree otherwise. What they're saying And what about those dash cameras? Eidson says it's worth it. "The dash cam immediately notified my wife that I had been in a wreck and sent her a text message with the location as well as a link to the live feed," he said. "So yes, you should get a dash cam." What you can do If you have information that can help deputies identify the driver or that truck, call the Coweta County Sheriff's Office. Columbus road construction open house
COLUMBUS, Ga. () — The Georgia Department of Transportation is planning major upgrades for two busy Columbus Roadways, and they're asking for community feedback. The Georgia Department of Transportation, GDOT, and the Transportation Investment Act, TIA, program shared proposed upgrades along Andrews and Brennan Road. Both corridors carry two-lane traffic and have been flagged for safety concerns, including frequent rear-end crashes and poor pedestrian access. 'There were some high crash areas on Andrews, there was a bad skew and a lot of abnormally high crashes at that point.' Says TIA Regional Coordinator, William Eastin, 'Same thing on Brennan we'll be adding a turn lane to help alleviate some rear end collisions that we saw in the traffic data.' The projects are still in the concept phase, but early plans include improved lighting, landscaping, and features for pedestrian and cyclist safety. Eastin says now is the time for the public to weigh in before final designs and right-of-way acquisition begin. 'We've had some coordination with the city kind of going back and forth on what the needs were when the citizens voted.' says Eastin. Addressing the many construction projects currently in the works, Eastin said, 'There's going to be a lot of design, a lot of construction coming on. So just please be patient and drive safe and watch out for our construction workers that we have in the field.' Officials expect to begin advertising for construction by the end of 2026 and estimate a two-year construction period. Residents can review project materials online and submit comments through May 27th. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
