Anthony Joshua's trainer slams Jake Paul challenge as 'deluded' as fight edges closer

Daily Mirror11 hours ago
Anthony Joshua is being heavily linked with a fight against Jake Paul in the near future and the Brit's trainer, Ben Davison, has been speaking about the potential showdown
Anthony Joshua 's trainer Ben Davison reckons Jake Paul is "deluded" for believing he can step into the ring and take on the two-time heavyweight champion.

Joshua hasn't fought since enduring a devastating knockout loss to Daniel Dubois. It appeared likely that the duo would clash again straight away, but 'AJ' required additional time to heal after sustaining some knocks during their heavyweight showdown.

The former two-time world titleholder is currently recovering from elbow surgery and is anticipated to make his return later this year. Remarkably, the leading contender to face Joshua in his comeback bout is the YouTuber-turned-boxer. A clash between the two could happen as soon as next year.

Paul is so eager to get in the ring with the Brit that he's even prepared to accept just a ONE PER CENT share of the fight purse. A sports finance specialist has forecast that a potential bout between them could generate $40million (£30m), reports All Out Fighting.
With millions worldwide expected to watch, it's hardly shocking that both fighters would be handsomely compensated for their participation. Joshua's trainer has hit back at Paul after the American repeatedly challenged 'AJ' to a fight, asserting that his star boxer could easily handle the social media star.
Davison and Joshua have been a team for nearly two years, forming a strong bond. When questioned about a potential showdown between the 35-year-old and the 'Problem Child,' Davison told the Stomping Ground: "You cannot judge people from where they have come from because everybody gets to certain different places in life and reaches the top all with different walks, different backgrounds."
The renowned boxing coach acknowledged Paul's success before tearing into the internet sensation. "Yeah he is (successful) in lots of different fields, but like I said, Anthony Joshua is probably the most dangerous man, or one of the most dangerous men in the sport. To be stepping in the ring with him, I just think it is deluded from Jake Paul."
He added: "I have no idea (if Paul can win) but I can categorically tell you that he is not winning that. He cannot win that fight, but AJ could win that fight and do whatever he wanted to do with him." Davison then reflected on former UFC fighter Francis Ngannou 's bout with Tyson Fury, arguing that the Cameroon heavyweight was more suited to fight Joshua before once again tearing into the American. "Do you think Jake Paul would go 10 rounds with Tyson Fury? No. Francis Ngannou did.

"But look what happened there with Francis Ngannou. Francis Ngannou was more qualified to box Anthony Joshua than Jake Paul and look what happened there. That is one of the most durable men on the planet, Francis Ngannou. Never mind and undersized Jake Paul."
When is Anthony Joshua's next fight?
With Joshua currently recovering from surgery on his elbow, the British heavyweight is hoping to make his comeback before the year is out.
His promoter, Eddie Hearn, has recently disclosed that 'AJ' is now looking to move forward with his career after repeatedly chasing a clash with Fury, though he remains optimistic of eventually settling their differences with the 'Gypsy King' before retiring. Speaking to Sky Sports about Joshua's future, Hearn said: "Yeah, good, he had that operation recently... that elbow surgery, which went very well. You will see him return in October, November or December."

Cruiserweight Jake Paul and lightweight Gervonta Davis announce they will fight on Nov. 14

YouTuber-turned-cruiserweight boxer Jake Paul and undefeated WBA lightweight champion Gervonta 'Tank' Davis have agreed to fight on Nov. 14 at Atlanta 's State Farm Arena. Paul's promotional company, Most Valuable Promotions, and Netflix announced the highly unusual matchup Wednesday. Netflix will stream the fight worldwide to its more than 300 million subscribers. The 30-year-old Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs), a three-division world champion, would be the first star near his ostensible prime to face Paul (12-1, 7 KOs), the online celebrity who has become one of the world's highest-paid combat sports athletes despite never fighting an elite boxer. Netflix and Nakisa Bidarian, Paul's business partner, did not refer to the fight as an exhibition, but it's unclear how Georgia officials would allow the matchup to be held as a competitive bout, given the fighters' dramatic difference in size and experience. Paul typically weighs more than 200 pounds in the ring, while Davis is a 135-pound champion who has never fought above 140 pounds. The fighters did not announce a contracted weight or the number of rounds in their planned bout. The fight would mark a return to Netflix for the 28-year-old Paul, whose victory last November over the then-58-year-old Mike Tyson drew an estimated 108 million viewers globally. After Paul beat a tepid Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by decision earlier this summer, he entered the World Boxing Association's cruiserweight rankings at No. 14, making him eligible to fight for world titles. Instead of pursuing a cruiserweight belt, Paul recently discussed a fight with two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua — a more logical opponent in terms of size and strength — but shifted his focus to the popular Davis. who has jousted with Paul on social media for years. Perhaps Paul can look inside his own family for a plan: His older brother, Logan, weighed 189 pounds before fighting Floyd Mayweather at 155 pounds in an eight-round exhibition bout in 2021. Promoters said the spectacle sold more than 1 million pay-per-view buys and made more than $80 million. Davis has been billed by his promoters as 'the modern day Mike Tyson" because of the frequency with which he has won by knockout, but his career and life have been rocky in 2025. He struggled to a shocking draw against Lamont Roach Jr. in his most recent ring outing in March, and he was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Florida last month before the misdemeanor battery case was dropped last week. Bidarian said Paul and Davis are 'favorites of the Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences,' and that their bout will 'determine the true face of boxing's next generation.' 'This isn't just a fight, it's a spectacle that brings together two of the most electrifying figures in boxing today,' Netflix vice president Brandon Riegg said. ___

Cruiserweight Jake Paul to fight lightweight Gervonta Davis on Nov. 14

August 20 - The great disparity in weight is at the forefront of the announcement Wednesday that cruiserweight Jake Paul will fight Gervonta "Tank" Davis, a world champion lightweight, on Nov. 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. A contracted weight and number of rounds were not announced, nor whether the bout, to be streamed live on Netflix, will be an exhibition as reported. Paul, a YouTube sensation turned mixed martial artist, has been focused on boxing. Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) last fought at 199 pounds on June 28 against former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and won a unanimous decision, leading to the WBA ranking him No. 14 at cruiserweight. Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) has not competed in a weight class heavier than 140 pounds, with the last six at the 135-pound limit. Davis weighed in at 133 pounds when he last fought in March to a majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr. and retained his WBA lightweight belt. "Gervonta is an angry little elf who has been disrespecting my name for too long," Paul said in a news release by his promotional company, Most Valuable Promotions. "Yes, he is one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world, but my motto is anyone, anytime, anyplace, against all odds. And I like my odds," he continued. "First, I am going to kill David, then I will go on to slaughter Goliath, and you are all going watch me do it, breaking viewership records again. Atlanta. Friday, Nov 14th. The worst night of Gervonta's career, live only on Netflix." Davis, 30, regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world, has exchanged a war of words with Paul despite the large gap in weight divisions. Paul, now 28, fought as a heavyweight for a November 2024 match with boxing legend Mike Tyson, now 59, on Netflix that was the most-streamed sporting event with 108 million live viewers, according to the promoter. Paul won by unanimous decision. "Jake Paul and Tank Davis have redefined the professional combat sports landscape as the top fighters among Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences," Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions, said in the news release. "Now they will collide to determine the true face of boxing's next generation. When Jake called out Tank in August of 2021, everyone laughed and said he would get killed. Since then, Tank has called Jake a clown and easy work. Well 4 years later, here we are. No more call outs and no more name calling. Jake the disrupter vs the Tank destroyer, for the face of boxing crown, live from the heart of the south, Atlanta." --Field Level Media
