Aventura Mall fans already know it's the best mall in the United States. Now the sprawling shopping center has national recognition, too.
The Northeast Miami-Dade mall, a city unto itself with plenty of offerings and surrounding traffic jams, plays big. There's a big slide, an Apple Store, an Italian food hall and market.
Now it also has a big ranking: Best Mall in America, as voted in the new USA Today 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards.
'Being named the best mall in the USA Today 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards reflects our continued commitment to curating exceptional experiences,' said Jackie Soffer, chairman and CEO of Turnberry, the majority owner of Aventura Mall.
'From welcoming Florida's first Eataly to bringing the most coveted fashion and lifestyle brands, and supporting culture through our museum-quality art collection, we're proud to offer a premier destination that continues to evolve. We thank our loyal guests for their continued support and for making this achievement possible,' Soffer said in a statement to the Miami Herald.
Eataly isn't the only first-in-Florida to open at sprawling Aventura Mall. Other brands trying Florida firsts in the last year include recent arrivals like Massimo Dutti wardrobe store, the fashion boutique Cinq à Sept, Dolce Vita footwear and Kim Kardashian's Skims store.

Twenty malls across the country were nominated for consideration by a panel of 'USA Today experts' in the fields of travel and lifestyle, according to the publication. The public was then given a chance to vote among the nominees. The only other Florida mall to contend was the Mall at Millenia in Orlando but it fell short of the Top 10.
Sorry Dadeland, Aventura's also ever-growing Kendall-area rival that recently opened the first Dick's House of Sport in South Florida.

Aventura Mall voted "Best Mall in America," USA TODAY poll

The people have spoken and America's best mall is right here in South Florida. Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise? Nope. The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale? Not quite. It's the Aventura Mall, which has been voted the Best Mall in America in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards. The publication points out that Aventura Mall, the largest mall in Florida, has more than 300 retail shops, experiences, and dining options. It also boasts a "museum-worthy art collection and regularly hosts community events such as story time, weekly yoga, and a farmers market." The mall is so popular, Brightline has added a station nearby. "We take great pride in Aventura Mall's continued position as the best mall for iconic brands and first-to-market experiences, helping define South Florida's place on the national and international stage," Jackie Soffer, chairman and CEO of Turnberry, owner of Aventura Mall, said. "Strategically located between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Aventura Mall draws a diverse, global audience ranging from international tourists to Gen Z and Millennial locals and tourists," according to USA Today. Nominees were selected by a panel of experts and then ranked based on votes from the public, according to USA Today. Aventura Mall was one of only 20 malls selected nationwide, and the only South Florida mall to be nominated. So who rounded out the top 5? Let's take a look. Coming in at number two was the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. It noted that with 500-plus stores and dozens of restaurants, visitors can find just about everything at this mall. "As the largest mall in the U.S., the Mall of America is not only a shopping and entertainment complex, but one of the top tourist destinations in the country. Every year, 32 million people visit this mall's stores, restaurants, attractions, and hotels. At the center of the mall is Nickelodeon Universe, the largest indoor theme park in America," according to USA TODAY. A mall in the Lone Star state came in at number 3 - Galleria Dallas. Along with a variety of retail stores and more than 30 casual and sit-down restaurants, it also boasts its own indoor ice rink. "The large indoor ice rink is at the center of this three-story mall, and while it stays open year-round, it's especially festive during the holiday season," according to USA TODAY. An urban oasis in the heart of Manhattan, New York landed in the number four position. The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards "occupies a million square feet of retail, restaurant, and entertainment space, and features a unique indoor-outdoor setup that makes the most of its Hudson River views." Rounding out the top 5 is the King of Prussia Mall inn Prussia, Pennsylvania. It features 450 retail locations and dining options range that from pizza joints and dim sum to steakhouses. "This mall offers a diverse range of national brands and specialty stores, and those seeking luxury goods can shop at a vast number of luxury retailers like Gucci, Cartier, Dior, and Balenciaga," USA TODAY said. Rounding out the remaining five are the Scottsdale Fashion Square in Scottsdale, Arizona; American Dream in East Rutherford, New Jersey; Grapevine Mills in Grapevine, Texas; Tysons Corner Center in Tysons, Virginia and Brookfield Place in New York City.

Buying a new car? Why picking yellow, orange and green will help your car retain its value

Hear this story Automotive research company iSeeCars conducted a study revealing the best and worst car colors for depreciation. While some colors have above-average depreciation rates, there are still plenty of options with below-average rates. Even if your car has an above-average rate of depreciation, there are still things owners can do for optimal value retention. Vehicles that experience high rates of depreciation after a few years aren't great for new car buyers, but they can be great for used car buyers. In fact, researching vehicles with high depreciation rates can be a good way to find a deal on a used car. On the other hand, some drivers may avoid vehicles that rapidly depreciate to retain some trade-in value or sell their cars later on. Some car colors have worse depreciation rates than others, according to a study conducted by an automotive search engine and research website. The three car colors with the worst depreciation rates, according to study Gold: 34.4% three-year depreciation White: 32.1% three-year depreciation Black: 31.9% three-year depreciation In case you missed it: Why even multimillionaire sports car CEOs commute in Toyotas Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle. Most vehicles tend to depreciate the second they roll off of dealer lots, but the rates of depreciation listed above are beyond average rates. So, if you're in the market for a new vehicle, you may not want to buy it in gold. Paying extra money for a gold color model could prove to be even more costly. Thankfully, there are plenty of car colors with below-average rates of depreciation. Car colors with the best depreciation rates, according to study Yellow: 24.0% three-year depreciation Orange: 24.4% three-year depreciation Green: 26.3% three-year depreciation "Yellow cars hold their value the best" according to the study results. So if you're looking for a new vehicle, this may be a color to consider for value retention. If you're hunting for a used vehicle deal, avoiding this color could save you some money because of the lower depreciation rate. The overall average three-year depreciation rate of the colors included in the study was 31%. How to use vehicle depreciation rates to find good car deals Finding a good deal on a used car can be difficult, but refining your search by including vehicles with high depreciation rates can save drivers thousands of dollars. Vehicles with high rates of depreciation after just a few years can have low mileage and much lower prices than their original MSRP. One example of a vehicle with a high depreciation rate is the 2023 Dodge Hornet. The 2023 model year is the first of its production history. Just a few years after its initial release, the Hornet has depreciated by over 31%. The 2023 Hornet has an original MSRP of $31,590. It now has a fair purchase price of $20,154 according to Kelley Blue Book. That's a value decrease of a whopping $11,436, making it a steal for interested parties as a used model. Another great example of vehicle depreciation is the 2022 Nissan Leaf. The 2022 Leaf has an original MSRP of $27,400 and a Kelley Blue Book fair purchase price of just $14,258. That's a depreciation rate of around 47%. Car buyers can save big bucks on a Nissan Leaf by purchasing a used model that has depreciated severely over the last few years. Car maintenance tips to help mitigate depreciation There's no surefire way to avoid car depreciation entirely, but proper maintenance and upkeep can help drivers retain as much of their vehicle's value as possible. Tips to minimize depreciation Regular maintenance Interior cleaning Exterior protection According to State Farm, there are several ways car owners can minimize depreciation. Ultimately, proper car care can equate to less depreciation in the long run and a higher resale value, so take those oil changes seriously. The more presentable your car is, the easier it is to get a fair purchase price or trade-in value later on.

Sweden, Netherlands say before NATO summit they will spend 5% of GDP on defense

BRUSSELS -- Less than two weeks before a NATO summit, Sweden and the Netherlands said Friday that they intend to increase defense spending to 5% of their gross domestic product, in line with U.S. President Donald Trump's demands. Trump and his NATO counterparts meet for a summit in the Netherlands on June 24-25, where they're due to agree a new defense spending target. He insists that Europe must look after its own security, while Washington focuses on China and its own borders. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that 'Sweden will reach a new NATO spending target to 5% of GDP, where at least 3.5% of GDP will be allocated towards core defense requirements to fulfill NATO's new capability targets." 'We are in a specific geographical situation where we need to meet the future threats from Russia,' Kristersson told reporters in Stockholm, standing alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, NATO's 32 allies agreed to spend at least 2% of GDP on their military budgets. But NATO's new plans for defending Europe and North America against a Russian attack require investment of at least 3%. The aim now is to raise the bar to 3.5% for core defense spending on tanks, warplanes, air defense, missiles and hiring extra troops. A further 1.5% would be spent on things like roads, bridges, ports and airfields so armies can deploy more quickly, as well as preparing societies for possible attack. According to the most recent NATO figures, Sweden was estimated to have spent 2.25% of its GDP on defense last year. The Netherlands spent 2.06%, among 22 of the 32 allies who reached NATO's old benchmark. The Dutch caretaker government announced on Friday that it would increase spending on defense to 3.5% of GDP in an effort to meet the 5% goal. It's not clear where the approximately 18 billion euros ($20 billion) will come from. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans called the decision 'historic' and told reporters after a Cabinet meeting that he hoped other NATO countries would also increase their spending. 'My expectation is that this will happen,' he said. Poland and the Baltic countries — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — have already publicly committed to 5%, and Rutte said last week that most allies were ready to endorse the goal. A big question still to be answered is what time frame countries will get to reach the new spending goals. A target date of 2032 was initially floated, but Rutte has said that Russia could be ready to launch an attack on NATO territory by 2030. The United States insists that a near-term deadline must be set. But Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday that his country would get to 5%,. but would require a decade to do so. Molly Quell reported from The Hague, Netherlands.
