The Open 2025, Round 3: McIlroy mounts charge, Scheffler stays ahead at Portrush

The Hindu2 days ago
Home favourite Rory McIlroy birdied three of his first four holes to mount a third-round charge as world number Scottie Scheffler maintained his British Open lead in perfect scoring conditions on Saturday.
The 36-year-old McIlroy began the day on three under par after two up-and-down rounds, seven strokes behind Scheffler, but roars resounded across the Dunluce Links as he made a dream start before reaching the turn at six under.
After his majestic round of 64 on Friday, world number Scheffler was becalmed at the start, three-putting for a par five at the second hole.
England's Matt Fitzpatrick, who began the day at nine under, missed a short par putt on the opening hole but responded with an eagle at the par-five second to join Scheffler on 10 under.
American Scheffler, bidding to lift the Claret Jug for the first time, sparked into life at the seventh with an eagle three.
China's Li Haotong was a shot back on nine under after a steady start.
With huge galleries swarming down the first fairway and massed around the green, McIlroy left himself a 36-foot putt for birdie and curled his effort into the cup.

He was close to an eagle at the par-five second, settling for another birdie, and made up his third stroke of the day at the fourth after a superb approach left him a seven-foot putt.
MCILROY CHARGE
Northern Ireland's McIlroy, bidding to win the Open for the second time after his maiden title at Hoylake in 2014, made six successive pars to remain at six under after 10 holes.
He bogeyed the 11th but eagled the 12th with a snaking 56-foot putt to move to seven under, prompting wild celebrations in the crowd.
After two days of unpredictable conditions, the weather gods relented to spark a feast of birdies and eagles.
Early starter Russell Henley of the United States made five birdies and an eagle in a 65 to rocket up the leaderboard and take the clubhouse lead on six under.
No Englishman has won the Open since Nick Faldo in 1992, but Fitzpatrick was not the only player heading into the weekend hoping to end that drought.
Tyrrell Hatton, who this week said 'three is the magic number' for pints of the local stout, roared into contention when his approach shot at the 607-yard par-five seventh landed on the green and curled towards the hole before wobbling in for an eagle three.
It was the second eagle at the seventh in successive groups after Scotland's Robert MacIntyre also made one.
American Brian Harman, Open champion two years ago at Royal Liverpool, started two shots off the lead, but made a terrible start as he double-bogeyed his opening hole to fall back to six under. He responded with a birdie at the next but made a bogey at the third.
Defending champion Xander Schauffele eagled the seventh and repeated the trick at the 12th before a birdie at the 15th lifted him within three shots of the lead.

Scheffler draws comparisons to Woods after dominant British Open win

Scottie Scheffler had already cemented his place among golf's all-time greats, but his commanding four-shot victory at the British Open reignited comparisons to Tiger Woods. Sunday's final round of the British Open at Royal Portrush was one of the more anticlimactic finishes to a major in recent memory and left many in the world of golf wondering if Scheffler was the heir to Woods' throne. "I look everywhere and I try to find some kind of a weakness, somewhere where he can get derailed, and I just can't find it," NBC Sports analyst and former Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley said. "He might even prove to have more longevity than Tiger Woods." Making comparisons to 15-times major champion Woods may be premature but world number one Scheffler, a four-time major winner, is playing in a league of his own and showing no signs of slowing down. "I don't think we thought the golfing world would see someone as dominant as Tiger come through so soon, and here's Scottie sort of taking that throne of dominance," said 2024 British Open champion Xander Schauffele. "You can't even say he's on a run. He's just been killing it for over two years now. He's a tough man to beat, and when you see his name up on the leaderboard, it sucks for us." Scheffler won the Masters in 2022 and 2024, earned his first PGA Championship title this year followed by his fourth career major with his British Open triumph. The 29-year-old Texan joined Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player as the only players to win a Masters, PGA Championship and British Open before age 30. "What he's doing is so dominant and so clinical," said NBC Sports analyst Brandel Chamblee. "I can't help but think that we are on an inevitable march towards one of the greatest careers in the history of golf." Scheffler's 149-week run as the number one ranked golfer in the world is also the longest since Woods occupied the top spot for a record 281 weeks from 2005 to 2010. "In a historical context, you could argue that there's only maybe two or three players in the history of the game that have been on a run, the one that Scottie's been on here for the last 24 to 36 months. Incredibly impressive," said world number two Rory McIlroy. Scheffler, who will undoubtedly be favoured wherever he tees it up for the foreseeable future, will get a chance to become only the seventh player to complete the career Grand Slam of golf's four majors at next June's U.S. Open. But despite an ability to make a complicated game seem simple at times and leave fellow competitors in awe, Scheffler is not ready to entertain talk about comparisons to Woods. "Tiger won, what, 15 majors? This is my fourth," Scheffler said after winning the Claret Jug. "I just got one-fourth of the way there. I think Tiger stands alone in the game of golf. "He was inspirational for me growing up. He was a very, very talented guy, and he was a special person to be able to be as good as he was at the game of golf."

FIDE allots chess World Cup to India, Goa Or Ahmedabad likely to be host city

Nagpur: The world chess federation (FIDE) on Monday gave India the hosting rights for the World Cup (open) to be held from October 30 to November 27. The All India Chess Federation (AICF) won the bid to host the World Cup after a gap of 23 years, but the infighting among officials delayed the announcement of the city where the world's best players will battle for the coveted title and three qualification spots for the 2026 Chess Candidates Tournament. TOI has learnt that the 29-day event will be staged either in Goa or Ahmedabad. An AICF official said, "Having won the bid, we will start the process of approval from the govt. Once that is done, we will soon announce the host city. Both Goa and Ahmedabad are interested in playing host to the world's top players. Everything will be finalised in our next executive meeting." New Delhi had hosted the knockout world championship in 2000 but the title clash was staged in Tehran. Hyderabad then hosted the eight-player World Cups (both Open and women) in 2002 when it was played in group-cum-knockout format. In a statement, FIDE said: "The World Cup 2025 will feature 206 players competing in a knockout format — a dynamic and unpredictable system where the losing player in each round is eliminated. The event has used several formats over the years, but since 2021, it has followed a single-elimination format." A handful of Indian players will take part in the eight-round knockout tournament. Every round will be played for three days — two classical games on the initial two days, followed by rapid and blitz tiebreaks. The top 50 rated players will take part from the second round while players seeded from 51 to 206 will compete in the opening round. As per the June rating list, as many as 20 Indian players including world champion D Gukesh have already qualified to participate in the World Cup. FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky said, "We are thrilled to bring the FIDE World Cup 2025 to India, a country with a deep-rooted passion and support for chess. Indian chess fans' enthusiasm has always been remarkable, and we anticipate great interest in the event among local chess lovers, both on-site and online."
