Brain scans could reveal your true biological age

Scientists can now judge how fast your whole body is aging based on a single snapshot of your brain, researchers claim in a new study.
The scientists, who published their findings July 1 in the journal Nature Aging, have developed a benchmark of biological aging based on brain MRIs. The team says the tool can predict an individual's future risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, chronic conditions like heart disease, physical frailty and early death.
"Our paper presents a new way of measuring how fast a person is aging at any given moment using the information available in a single brain MRI," said first author Ahmad Hariri, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke University. "Faster aging increases our risk for many diseases including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and dementia," he told Live Science in an email.
Hariri and colleagues used data from the Dunedin Study, which followed 1,037 people from Dunedin, New Zealand, from birth to middle age. These participants, born in 1972 and 1973, periodically received 19 assessments to check the function of their heart, brain, liver, kidneys and more.
To develop their tool, the team analyzed the brain MRIs taken from this cohort at age 45 and ran the data about brain structure — the volume and thickness of various brain regions and the ratio of white to gray matter — through a machine learning algorithm.
They compared the processed brain data to other data collected from the participants at the same time, such as tests of physical and cognitive decline, subjective health statuses, and signs of facial aging, like wrinkles. They asserted that bigger declines in those areas were tied to a faster pace of aging, overall, and then correlated features of the brain data to those metrics. They called their resulting model "Dunedin Pace of Aging Calculated from Neuroimaging," or DunedinPACNI.

Previously, the team created a similar tool called Dunedin Pace of Aging Calculated from the Epigenome (DunedinPACE). That metric looked at methylation — chemical tags that attach to DNA molecules — in blood samples to estimate people's pace of aging. Methylation is a type of "epigenetic change," meaning it alters genes activity without changing DNA's underlying code.
"[DunedinPACE] has been widely adopted by studies with available epigenetic data," Hariri said. "DunedinPACNI now allows studies without epigenetic data but with brain MRI to measure accelerated aging." The researchers directly compared DunedinPACNI to DunedinPACE, finding that they generated similar results.
To see if their new tool could be useful beyond Dunedin, the team used it to estimate the pace of aging using MRIs in other datasets: 42,000 MRIs from the U.K. Biobank; over 1,700 MRIs from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI); and 369 from the BrainLat set, which includes data from five South American countries.
"Making sure our findings generalize across datasets and demographic groups is a big priority for brain imaging research," study co-author Ethan Whitman, a doctoral student at Duke, told Live Science in an email.
They found that DunedinPACNI could also estimate the rate of aging in these other cohorts, and that it did so as accurately as other measures used in the past.
The U.K. Biobank and ADNI also include measures of specific health effects of aging, including tests of physical frailty, like grip strength and walking speed, as well as rates of heart attack, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and death from all causes within the cohorts. Using these additional measures, the team was able to link faster aging rates, as determined with DunedinPACNI, with increased risks of heart attack, stroke, COPD and death.
Hariri believes DunedinPACNI has the potential to be widely adopted because the type of MRIs it uses are routinely collected. Now it's a matter of crunching the data and determining standards of what reflects "healthy" and "poor" aging, he said.
"The fact that it worked well with the BrainLat data is a big win for the investigators because it supports the generalizability of the model,' said Dr. Dan Henderson, a primary care physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital and instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School who was not involved with the study. "It would still be worth looking at other data sets where genetic and other factors might be different in important ways," he added.

Henderson said he could see DunedinPACNI eventually being used in place of conventional health measures to fine-tune medical interventions for individual patients. Whitman also sees broad implications for the research. Assuming it's validated for use by doctors, he thinks it could help patients prepare for age-related health issues before they manifest."We were really amazed that our tool was able to predict disease risk before symptoms had started," Whitman told Live Science in an email. "We think this is a great example of why it's important to study aging in general, but especially in younger, healthy people. If you only study people after they have gotten sick, you're missing a lot of the story."

The findings shake up our understanding of the origin of stars in the early universe and "calls for a reassessment of the helium chemistry in the early universe," the researchers wrote in the new study, published July 24 in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. The first stars in the universe Just after the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago, the universe was subject to extremely high temperatures. A few seconds later, though, temperatures decreased enough for hydrogen and helium to form as the first ever elements. Hundreds of thousands of years after those elements formed, temperatures became cool enough for their atoms to combine with electrons in a variety of different configurations, forging molecules. According to the researchers, a helium hydride ion — or HeH+ — became the first ever molecule. The ion is needed to form molecular hydrogen, now the most abundant molecule in the universe. Both helium hydride ions and molecular hydrogen were critical to the development of the first stars hundreds of millions of years later, the researchers said. For a protostar to begin fusion — the process that enables stars to create their own energy — atoms and molecules within it must collide with each other and release heat. This process is largely ineffective at temperatures under 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit (10,000 degrees Celsius). Related: Universe's First Molecule Detected in Space for the First Time Ever However, helium hydride ions are particularly good at continuing the process, even under cool temperatures, and are considered to be a potentially integral factor of star formation in the early universe. The amount of helium hydride ions in the universe may therefore have had significant bearing on the speed and efficacy of early star formation, the researchers said in a statement. Far more important than previously assumed In the new study, the researchers recreated early helium hydride reactions by storing the ions at minus 449 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 267 degrees Celsius) for up to 60 seconds to cool them down before forcing them to collide with heavy hydrogen. Researchers studied how the collisions — similar to those that kickstart fusion in a star — changed depending on the temperature of the particles. They found that reaction rates between these particles do not slow down at lower temperatures, which contradicts older assumptions. This new finding of how helium hydride ions function challenges how physicists think stars formed in the early universe. A recent study found that lifting weights can help you expend energy and burn fat as effectively as cardio can. Because resistance training also builds strength and muscle, it's an efficient and effective way to burn calories, prevent muscle decline, and keep your metabolism ticking along nicely at any age, but particularly in those later years. As a personal trainer, I work with many clients at various stages of their lives, including my dad, who is 72, and who trains with me twice a week. Here are my favorite five compound exercises (multi-muscle movements) to keep you strong and mobile after 50, and my pa still swears by them in his 70s. Why does lifting weights matter? Lifting weights has tons of benefits at any age, helping you build stronger bones, muscles, and joints, and stay active. Lean muscle mass is more metabolically active than fat, and as muscle mass and metabolism begin to decline naturally after 30, increasing or maintaining muscle mass will help prevent injuries and boost your metabolism. In turn, this can prevent unwanted weight gain and fat accumulation. In other words, it's not all doom and gloom — you can still be extremely fit and healthy at any age, but burning fat may take a little more work, so I also recommend a balanced diet high in protein and plenty of daily movement. And no, that doesn't mean increasing cardio, either; lifting weights can be just as effective, or combining the two. Remember, fat loss doesn't happen in one place only, so be wary of any trainer who tells you that an exercise can burn belly fat. This is called spot-reduction, and it's a myth. Focus on fat loss as a whole by staying active and expending more energy in a day than you consume. 5 compound exercises to burn fat after 50 You could create a circuit of the movements below or incorporate them into a strength routine that mixes in other movements. Remember, every three to four weeks, try to incrementally increase volume in some way — adding weight, for example. This is known as progressive overload, and should prevent your efforts from plateauing. Aim for 3 to 4 sets of 6-12 reps. 1. Squat Stand with your feet roughly shoulder-width apart Bend at the knees and send your hips back as if sitting in a chair behind you Lower into a squat, keeping your chest lifted and back straight — no hunching When your thighs are roughly parallel to the floor, press through your heels and stand, squeezing your butt. You can start with your hands on your hips or arms extended in front of you. If you'd like to add weight, start by holding a dumbbell (or similar) in both hands at your chest. Deadlifts are quite technical when you get to the finer details of the movements, so I recommend checking out our guide on how to deadlift properly. 3. Push-up Start in a high plank position with your hands stacked beneath your shoulders and your hips aligned with your shoulders Engage your core muscles, gently pulling your belly in towards your spine Bend your elbows and lower your chest toward the floor, keeping your body straight Pause, then push back up and straighten your arms. Row Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand by your sides Softly bend your knees, then hinge forward at your hips and send your butt back Stop when your chest is almost parallel to the floor Keep your back straight and core engaged Pull the dumbbells toward your hips, keeping both elbows close to your ribcage Pause, then lower them with control.
