Rory McIlroy on becoming playing Ryder Cup captain - 'I've shot it down straight away'
McIlroy, Europe's leading points scorer in their victory in Rome two years ago, said the idea had already been raised with him but he rejected it out of hand.
The World No. 2 has plenty of time left at the top as a player, but it is a dilemma facing United States captain Keegan Bradley, whose form this year has elevated him to 12th in the world and 10th on America's qualification list.
"I've been asked to do that and I've turned it down," said McIlroy, who was the first player to automatically qualify for Europe's team for next month's event at Bethpage in New York.
"The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon has come up and I've shot it down straight away because I don't think you can do it.
"If you'd have said it 20 years ago I'd say it was probably possible to do, but how big of a spectacle it is and everything that's on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in.
"There's a lot of things that people don't see that the captain does the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now that the Ryder Cup has become so big.
"The captain's only going to be able to play one session on Friday, one session on Saturday. Would you rather not have a player that has the flexibility to go twice if he's playing well?"
On Thursday McIlroy will tee off alongside world number one Scottie Scheffler in the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club outside Baltimore.
The Northern Irishman opted to skip the opening event of the FedEx Cup as he knew he was already guaranteed a spot in the PGA Tour's season-ending Tour Championship next week and that drew some criticism.
However, McIlroy argued his year is far from over as, in addition to the Ryder Cup, he will head back to the DP World Tour for a number of events, including the Irish Open and BMW Championship at Wentworth, before trying to win his seventh Race to Dubai title in November.
"A lot of the guys aren't 18 years into their professional career. I feel like I'm in a little bit of a different position," he added.
"I'm playing nine times between now and the end of the year, so I've still got a pretty busy stretch coming up and I just think that extra week off will do me good with the events coming up."

Shane Lowry began the weather-delayed BMW Championship in Maryland with a level-par round of 70 to keep his FedEx Cup hopes alive while Rory McIlroy was also level par after 14 holes of his round. The pair came into this week with very different objectives on the PGA Tour, but East Lake, and the FedEx Cup's season-ending Tour Championship, is on the horizon before attentions turn to the Ryder Cup in Bethpage in six weeks. For Lowry, he is outside the automatic places for Team Europe at present and his disappointing T59 finish in Memphis at the opening play-off saw him slip to 27th in the FedEx Cup rankings, and he will need to remain competitive in Caves Valley this weekend. McIlroy finished fourth the last time the BMW Championship was held here, four years ago, and he was paired with World No 1, and Open Champion, Scottie Scheffler for the first two rounds. READ MORE Lowry knew he had to make a fast start and had three birdies in his first three holes. His wonderful approach on the Par 4 first, left him with 18 inches for birdie. He slotted a 12-foot birdie putt on the second, and one from just over 8ft on the third. The Clara native dropped shots on the seventh and 10th, but bounced back on the Par 4 11th, following a brilliant approach and a 16ft birdie putt. A superb long iron provided the platform for another birdie chance from 8ft on the 519-yard Par 4 12th, but he missed. He then bogeyed 14 and 15 and despite his second birdie of the back nine, on 16, another dropped shot on 17 saw him finish his round on level-par. McIlroy was wayward off the tee and he had three bogeys on his front nine, losing shots on the second, fourth and sixth. The only highlight was the third, where his tee shot set up a 10ft putt for birdie, which he drained. While Scheffler had three birdies in the first four holes, McIlroy was forced to chase and he finally made some headway with a brilliant birdie on the ninth. And just as McIlroy began to find some momentum, the reigning FedEx Cup champion faltered with back-to-back bogeys to fall out of the lead. Meanwhile, McIlroy picked up another shot on the 10th with a putt from just under 10ft. The Holywood golfer almost holed his second from 201 yards on the 12th, but had to settle for par after his putt from the fringe grazed the hole. He had further pars on 13 and 14 before the klaxon sounded after his tee shot on the Par 4 15th.

The Clara ace got off to a blistering start, posting three birdies in his opening three holes before dropping a shot on the par four seventh. Another bogey followed on the 10th and while he bounced back with a birdie on the following hole, he undid his good early work with a poor finish. Three bogeys on a four-stretch hole were interspersed with a birdie on the par 5 sixteenth, but he missed a 12-footer for birdie on the 18th. Scottie Scheffler also began his round with three birdies in three holes before stalling mid-round to be one-under after 14 holes. Playing partner Rory McIlroy struggled off the tee and was two-over after six holes. However, the Holywood ace recovered with some good approach play to record back-to-back birdies at the turn and was level par after 14 holes, when players were called in. Viktor Hovland was the clubhouse leader on three-under after birdieing two of his last three holes for a 67. Out on the course Rickie Fowler was also three-under after 12 holes, having gone on a birdie blitz around the turn. Meanwhile, Marco Penge set a new course record to earn a two-shot lead at the Danish Golf Championship. The Englishman was blemish-free in his seven-under-par 64 after recording an eagle and five birdies during the first round at Fureso Golf Klub. Penge needed to birdie the 18th hole during the second round of the Genesis Championship last October to ensure his playing rights for this season, and hasn't looked back since. Home favourite Rasmus Hojgaard carded eight birdies, a double bogey and a bogey shot to surge into a share of second place at five-under alongside Francesco Molinari.

The field is down to just the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings ahead of the season's finale that will see only the top 30 progress to the Tour Championship at East Lake. And time is on his side until after the PGA Tour regular season ends as the final event for Ryder Cup points will be at the Betfred British Masters. That one concludes on August 24. As for Keegan Bradley's American side, 2025 US Open champion JJ Spaun also sealed an automatic qualification place after his runner-up finish in Memphis. The Californian now joins Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele on the team as they cannot mathematically drop outside the top six on the USA ladder.
