In 100th year, St Teresa's plans grand tribute to basketball legacy in Kochi
At the heart of this tribute is coach Maya Joseph Vithayathil — a former Kerala athlete and the woman behind the rise of St Teresa's in basketball. From 1968 to 2002, she built a team that not only swept MG University championships but also produced athletes who would go on to represent the state and the country.
'Back then, teams would hesitate to face us,' Maya tells TNIE.
'We were consistent, aggressive, and passionate — and we created a strong pool of talent for Kerala and India.'
Her wards included Prasanna Kumari, the first Keralite to captain the national women's basketball team, and Raji Thampi, who led Kerala to its first-ever win in the senior national championship in 1984-85. To mark the centenary, over 250 former athletes of the college will take part in a symbolic 'star walk' on June 11 — from the main academic block on Park Avenue to the science block on T D Road. The celebration also includes a veterans' tournament and an exhibition match featuring former players.
For Prasanna Kumari, returning to the campus is emotional.
'That court gave us everything. We weren't just a team — we were a movement,' she says. 'Maya miss was more than a coach. Her drive shaped our lives. I went on to play for 27 years and now I coach — that's how deep the impact runs.'

Chennaiyin FC suspends operations due to uncertainty surrounding ISL
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Indian club football appeared to be in complete crisis as Chennaiyin FC on Wednesday suspended its operations in view of the uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League, days after Bengaluru FC and Odisha FC decided to stop paying salaries to their first-team players and staff. Chennaiyin's decision came a day before a crucial meeting between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) top brass and eight ISL clubs on Thursday. Chennaiyin FC is, however, unlikely to have a representation in the meeting as the club is not among the signatories calling for such a move. 'In the light of the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of the ISL, Chennaiyin FC has taken the extremely difficult decision to temporarily pause club operations," the Chennai-based club said on its social media handle. 'These are never easy decisions to make, and ours has come after much thoughtful consideration and careful deliberation. The challenges of being a stakeholder in Indian football are well recognized. 'This is not a step we take lightly. It affects people we care about deeply. The welfare of our players, coaches, staff and their families remains a priority, and we are in constant communication with them as we face this together." The two-time ISL champion side 'hope that this pause will be short-lived and that we can return to doing what we love as soon as there is clarity for all clubs". 'Throughout this uncertainty, our commitment to the growth of Indian football, upon which this journey began remains as strong as ever. Last week, ISL side Odisha FC took the decision to suspend paying salaries to its first-team players and staff. Late on Monday, Bengaluru FC indefinitely suspended contracts of its first-team players and staff amid the continued uncertainty over the ISL, which remains on hold. The club, home to legendary striker and former India captain Sunil Chhetri, said the lack of clarity on the League's future left it with no choice but to take this 'difficult" decision. 'In view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season, Bengaluru Football Club has taken what is a very difficult decision of indefinitely suspending the salaries of the players and staff belonging to the first team," the Bengaluru club had said in statement. 'Running and sustaining a football club in India has always been an uphill climb, one we have put everything aside made, season after season. 'However, the lack of clarity on the League's future leaves us with no choice but to take this step. The future and well-being of our players, staff and their families is of utmost importance to us, and we are in touch with them as we wait for a resolution," the statement added. Bengaluru FC also urged both the AIFF and FSDL to resolve the impasse at the earliest. 'We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly. The uncertainty benefits no one, and a prompt resolution is vital for the future of Indian football," the club said. The ISL was put on hold by its organisers, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), due to the unresolved status of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) with the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The current 15-year MRA between FSDL and AIFF, signed in 2010, expires on December 18. Amid the growing uncertainty, eight ISL clubs have written to the AIFF expressing concern about their future. The AIFF's top brass is scheduled to meet the CEOs of the eight clubs on Thursday to discuss the situation. The letter, calling for a 'constructive dialogue" with the AIFF, was signed by Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur FC, FC Goa, Hyderabad FC, Kerala Blasters, NorthEast United FC, Odisha FC and Punjab FC. The three Kolkata-based clubs — Mohun Bagan Super Giant, East Bengal, Mohammedan Sporting — as well as Mumbai City FC and Chennaiyin FC were missing. Amardeep Malik surges ahead by two strokes
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Ahmedabad, Aug 6 (PTI) Amardeep Malik's hot putter helped him surge ahead by two strokes in round two of the India Open at the Kensville Golf & Country Club here on Wednesday. The Noida-based Amardeep (69-65) carded seven-under 65 to total 10-under 134 for the week in the Rs 1 crore prize money event. Angad Cheema (69-67) of Chandigarh, who was the overnight joint leader along with Malik, posted a 67 on day two to be placed second at eight-under 136. Delhi's Shaurya Bhattacharya (71-66) shot a 66 to be placed third at seven-under 137. The halfway cut fell at five-over 149. Fifty-three professionals and one amateur made the cut. Amardeep began the day with a 15-feet birdie conversion on the 10th. He then went on to pick up four more birdies from a range of eight to 20 feet on the back-nine. Amardeep's hot streak with the putter continued on the front-nine as he sank birdies from 25 feet and a mammoth 50 feet on the first and third holes respectively. Malik, a two-time winner on the PGTI, capped his round with a bogey and birdie on the fifth and sixth. 'I tried to hit the safest shot possible today and as a result found most fairways and greens. I guess I also got lucky on the tough greens today as I converted a lot of long putts," Amardeep said. 'One has to be careful with the speed because the speed is really tricky on these greens. I think sometimes a player gets into a zone where it just feels easy. 'I haven't played a lot of golf in the last two and a half months as I recently became a father. But I'm just glad to be back on the course and competing in the very first event after the resumption of the season." Angad Cheema, who recently played the qualifying event for The Open in the UK, came up with a 40-feet eagle conversion on the sixth along with five birdies and two bogeys. Delhi's Rakshit Dahiya (72-71), the only amateur in the field, made the cut as he was placed an impressive tied 12th at a total of one-under 143. Local lad Varun Parikh (74-70) was a further shot back in tied 15th position. Varun was the only Ahmedabad-based player to make the cut. 5 Players From England Series Who Are Unlikely To Be Picked For West Indies Tests
Last Updated: The Indian men's cricket team will face West Indies in a two-match Test series in October. The series opener will be played in Ahmedabad, and the 2nd Test is scheduled in Delhi. Following the conclusion of the five-match Test series against the English team, which ended in a 2-2 draw on Monday (August 4) at The Oval in London, Indian Test players will be on a break for a couple of months, as India's next red-ball series is scheduled to take place in October 2025. In October, the Indian team will face the West Indies team in a two-match Test series at home. The series opener will be played from October 2 to 6 at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, and Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium will host the second match from October 10 to 14. A total of 21 players were part of India's squad (full members + injury replacements) for the England tour, and of those 21 players, 16 got a chance to play at least one match in the series. While the majority of them managed to impress with their performance in the series against England, a few of them failed to live up to the mark, and as a result, they could be dropped from the Indian team for the home series against the West Indies. Here's a look at five players from the England series who are unlikely to be picked for the two-match Test series against the West Indies: Shardul Thakur: Thakur was picked in the Indian team for the England tour due to his super all-round show in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season for Mumbai. But in the two Tests he played against the English team, Thakur was only able to take two wickets and score 46 runs with the bat. Thakur's flop show with the ball was the reason he was twice dropped from the playing XI in England, and there are high chances that he won't be considered for the home series in October. Anshul Kamboj: Kamboj joined Team India as an injury replacement for Nitish Kumar Reddy, and he made his Test debut in Manchester during the fourth Test. But in his maiden international match for the Indian team, the Haryana-based cricketer was only able to take one wicket in 18 overs and conceded 89 runs. He even faced criticism for his bowling speed, which dropped down to the 120s. Nitish Kumar Reddy: Nitish Kumar Reddy suffered a knee injury ahead of the fourth Test, and due to that, he was ruled out of the last two matches. In the two matches that he got a chance to play against the English team, Reddy failed to impress with his batting. Due to the uncertainty over his fitness, there are not many chances of him getting picked, and even if he is available, his recent performances, which also include IPL 2025, don't look good, and he might lose his place in the Test team. Arshdeep Singh: Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was picked in India's Test squad for the first time in his career for the England series, but he didn't get a chance to play any matches there. And since he didn't get a chance to play in England, where conditions would have favoured him, there are almost negligible chances of him getting a go in the home series. Also, keeping India's jam-packed white-ball season ahead in mind, selectors won't increase Arshdeep's workload by including him in the Test series against the West Indies as well. Narayan Jagadeesan: Narayan Jagadeesan was added to India's squad for the fifth Test against England as a replacement for Rishabh Pant. Pant is India's first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in Tests, and since he is expected to get fit in time for the West Indies series, Jagadeesan will have to make way, as Dhruv Jurel is already India's backup wicketkeeper.
