PM Meets German Chancellor, Discusses Ways To Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in key areas such as trade and investment, defence and security, green energy and technology.
The two leaders, who met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit here, also exchanged views on regional and international developments, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
Prime Minister Modi thanked Chancellor Merz for Germany's strong solidarity and support to India in the fight against terrorism, he said.
"Commemorating steadfast 25 years of Strategic Partnership. PM @narendramodi met Chancellor Friedrich Merz @_FriedrichMerz of Germany on the sidelines of #G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada," Mr Jaiswal said on X.
"Both leaders discussed ways to strengthen India-Germany bilateral cooperation in key areas of trade and investment, defence and security, green and sustainable development partnership, green energy, technology, innovation, education and mobility," he added.
Earlier, Modi had said he would be discussing important global issues and emphasise the priorities of the Global South as he meets world leaders at the G7 Summit.

President Sheinbaum appreciated India's strides in technology, innovation and digital public infrastructure and expressed desire for cooperation with India in these areas, MEA said. Prime Minister Modi underlined that the two countries should explore collaboration in the fields of semiconductors, AI, Quantum and critical minerals, it said. Israel has right to defend itself : G7 leaders, while Trump leaves Summit early
Alberta (Canada), June 17 (UNI) The Group of Seven leaders, meeting here for the 51st Summit, on Tuesday affirmed support to Israel, describing Iran as the 'principal source of regional instability and terror', while US President Donald Trump left the meeting early after warning Iranian people to evacuate Tehran. The G-7 leaders who are attending the two-day Summit, reiterated commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East and called for resolution of the Iranian crisis leading to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the region, including a ceasefire in Gaza. In a statement 'Recent Developments Between Israel And Iran', the G-7 leaders asserted that Israel has a right to defend itself and Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. 'We, the leaders of the G7, reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel. We also affirm the importance of the protection of civilians. Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror. We have been consistently clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,' they said in a brief statement. They said they would remain vigilant to the implications for international energy markets and stand ready to coordinate, including with like-minded partners, to safeguard market stability. The statement came as the US President abruptly left for home on Monday evening cutting short his visit to Canada as the Israel-Iran crisis deepened further. President Trump warned Iranian people to 'immediately evacuate Tehran.' 'Iran should have signed the (nuclear) deal I told them to sign. What a shame and waste of human life. Simply stated, Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. I said it over and over again,' Trump said. Before he left the US President asked his National Security Council to be prepared in the situation room as he returns early from the G7 Summit. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on X on Monday that because of what was going on in the Middle East, President Trump would be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State. 'President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Much was accomplished, but because of what's going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State.' Trump told reporters he had to leave early for 'obvious reasons' but later posted on Truth Social that his early exit had 'nothing to do with' working on a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
