Avalanche boost depth at center by bringing back Brock Nelson on a 3-year contract extension
DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche shored up their depth at center by bringing back Brock Nelson on a three-year deal.
The team announced the contract extension Wednesday that will keep the 33-year-old Nelson with the Avalanche through the 2027-28 season. Colorado picked up Nelson in a trade with the New York Islanders on March 6. Nelson played in 19 games with Colorado to finish up the regular season with six goals and seven assists, and had four assists in the team's first-round playoff exit against Dallas.
'He's been a great center in this league for a long time, and he brings professionalism and a dedicated work ethic on and off the ice,' Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said in a statement. 'We think he's a great fit and is a stabilizing presence to our second-line center role with his size and ability to touch all areas of the ice. We're excited to see what his contributions will be over a larger sample size with the Avalanche.'
Nelson has 587 career points (301 goals, 286 assists) spanning 920 regular-season games since being selected by the Islanders in the first round of the 2010 NHL draft. He played at North Dakota before joining the Islanders.
Nathan MacKinnon is Colorado's top-line center and turned in a regular season in which he finished second in the league with 116 points. Nelson occupies the second-line center spot and Charlie Coyle anchors the third line.
Nelson has proven durable, playing in 246 straight regular-season games.
'Having spent my entire career with one organization, we weren't totally sure what to expect when we arrived in Denver,' said Nelson, who was acquired as part of a deal that sent Calum Ritchie, Oliver Kylington, a first-round pick in the 2026 or 2027 NHL draft and a conditional third-round pick in 2028 to the Islanders. 'But getting the opportunity to play for the Avalanche, to compete with a great group of teammates in that locker room, and in front of the tremendous fans at Ball Arena, we knew this was where we wanted to stay.'

‘The Girls Are Fighting'— Trump Vs. Musk Feud Goes Viral

(Photo by) Getty Images President Donald Trump and Elon Musk's relationship has deteriorated into a bitter feud, lighting up Musk's social media platform X, the site formerly known as Twitter. Trump is no longer quite as online as he used to be (in his peak, the man was an extremely dedicated Twitter poster who regularly went viral), but Musk's timeline is as active as ever. Musk seemed to lay the groundwork for the feud by retweeting several old tweets from Trump in an attempt to portray the president as a hypocrite. From there, the feud only escalated, much to the delight of X's inhabitants. Musk recently left the White House, seemingly on good terms, but in exceptionally strange circumstances. Musk appeared on camera with a black eye and a 'Dogefather' t-shirt, before he was given a symbolic golden key to the White House, engraved with the Reddit logo. The world's richest man certainly succeeded in introducing stale meme culture to the highest office in the land, but the political alliance unraveled a few days later, as Musk began to criticize Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' for raising the debt ceiling. Trump responded, suggesting that Musk was beginning to suffer from 'Trump derangement syndrome' and claimed that this was a common ailment for those who left his inner circle. Trump also said that Musk was upset that the electric vehicle tax credit was removed, and that Musk was otherwise supportive of the bill. Musk's tone began to grow more aggressive on X, as he wrote: 'False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!' Musk then claimed that Trump would have lost the election without his help, and accused Trump of showing 'ingratitude.' Trump began to respond on Truth Social, his own social media platform, writing that the easiest way to save money in the budget would be to 'terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.' Trump continued, writing that Musk was 'wearing thin' at the White House and claiming that Musk 'just went CRAZY!' when the EV tax credit was removed from his bill. Musk responded on X, describing Trump's post as an 'obvious lie,' and then went nuclear, alleging that Trump was 'in the Epstein files.' Musk described his own post as the 'really big bomb' and even took the time to tag Trump's official X account. The site's users took great joy in watching the feud in real time, responding to the showdown between the president and the world's wealthiest man with jokes and memes. Several comparisons were made to the Kendrick vs. Drake feud. Others compared the feud to a divorce, and resurrected the weird J.D. Vance memes, framing the vice president as the troubled child of bickering parents. Kanye West tweeted as though he was that child, pleading with the two to stop fighting. Most viewed the Trump vs. Musk feud as one of the greatest days in Twitter history, cracking jokes about how difficult it was to stay on top of the flood of memes. Many X inhabitants mocked the users that migrated to rival platform, Bluesky, noting that the toxicity and melodrama was an integral part of the X experience. Spectators were so keen to catch Trump's response on Truth Social that they temporarily crashed the site. Not content with the president's silence, some passed the time by posting fake responses from Trump. Many joked that Tesla was now going to face hostility from all sides of the political spectrum. Some users claimed that they always knew the feud was coming—the burning Tesla CyberTruck outside of the Trump hotel that marked the beginning of this year was viewed as an omen. When Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (AOC) was asked her opinion of the feud, she responded with, 'The girls are fighting, aren't they?' AOC went on to describe the feud as 'a long time coming. We were saying that these two huge egos were not long for being together in this world as friends.' Azealia Banks, who first popularized the phrase 'the girls are fighting,' was shocked that AOC was familiar with her meme, writing 'in what world is AOC fluent in Azealia Banksism's?' For now, Trump and Musk appear to have put down their phones, marking something of a ceasefire. The internet awaits the next round with baited breath—the two powerful, mercurial men both surely want to have the last word.

Stokely, Stevenson combine for 9 RBIs and North Carolina routs Arizona 18-2 to open Super Regional
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Hunter Stokely drove in five runs, Luke Stevenson drove in four and North Carolina rolled to an 18-2 victory over Arizona on Friday to open the Chapel Hill Super Regional. Jake Knapp allowed two runs on nine hits in seven innings. He improved to 14-0 with a 2.02 ERA. Tom Chmielewski finished with two scoreless innings. The top-ranked and No. 5 national seed Tar Heels scored eight runs in the first two innings, three on Stokely's home run that made it a 5-1 game in the first inning. Stevenson's three-run home run in the second made it 8-1. Stokely added an RBI-single in the fourth and another in the eighth inning. Stevenson drove in North Carolina's first run back in the first inning. Sam Angelo hit a three-run home run in the eighth and Kane Kepley's solo home run later in the inning made it 18-2. Gavin Gallaher had four hits and scored three runs. Kepley and Jackson Van De Brake each scored four times for the Tar Heels. The first five batters in the order had 13 hits and drove in 12 runs. They scored 15 runs. Adonys Guzman drove in a run with a single in the first inning and Easton Breyfogle added a sacrifice fly in the fourth for Arizona's two runs. Owen Kramkowski (9-6) allowed eight runs in an inning and a third. North Carolina (46-13) is playing in a Super Regional for the 12th time, having advanced eight times previously.
