Forget a social media ban. If tech companies won't stop targeting teens like me, block them

And my algorithm is relatively benign. In the US, parents who are suing social media companies for allegedly causing their children to take their own life have reported that their children's feeds were filled with material about 'suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders'.

For social media companies, profits clearly come before teens' mental health. So perhaps seriously jeopardising those profits would be the most effective way to force change.
While the impending social media ban threatens fines of up to $50 million for social media companies that do not take 'reasonable steps' to prevent workarounds, that probably isn't going to be enough of a punishment to create change. The term 'reasonable steps' is too vague, and the profits made from having under-16s illegally using social media apps would likely outweigh the fines.
It's instead worth looking to some of the more drastic steps that have been taken in the US against social media companies, for various reasons. The US government's banning of TikTok, though relating to data privacy concerns rather than mental health, did effectively lead to the app going offline in US for a day (the ban was then postponed, but is due to come back into effect in September, unless its parent company ByteDance sells its American operations to a US-owned company.)
This kind of broad government action against social media companies, threatening to entirely suspend their operations unless they cease recommending distressing or disturbing content to teenagers, might be worth trying in Australia.
But even if this doesn't happen – if there's no effective legislation from the government, and we can't change the fact that kids will be exposed to dangerous content – one of the easiest and most important ways to reduce the harm of social media is education.
Parents and schools often warn us about online predators, but not about how we should deal with content that makes us feel bad about ourselves or other people. And that's probably because adults and authorities don't fully understand what we're being exposed to.
If schools partnered with social media experts and psychologists to learn what kinds of content social media is promoted to young people, what warning signs parents should look for if their child is at risk of internet-induced mental health issues, and how young people can disengage from harmful content or learn how to better deal with it, then we might make some progress. It's akin to giving kids and teenagers a vaccine against the social media virus, rather than trying to keep it out of the country.

Because, after all, social media doesn't cease being a cesspit of negativity and danger once children turn 16. These highly powerful algorithms profit off worsening our mental health, and they're relentless. Educating young people on how to critically engage with or distance themselves from harmful online content is a long-term form of protection.

Under the agreement, Iluka will front a US$20 million construction loan, accompanied by a 15-year offtake deal for 90,000 tonnes of Kangankunde's premium monazite concentrate, weighing in at a stellar 55 per cent total rare earth oxides (TREO). 'The funding and offtake agreements represent a major de-risking milestone for Stage 1 of our Kangankunde rare earths project, providing increased confidence for all our stakeholders by showing a clear pathway to production.' Lindian Resources executive chairman Robert Martin The concentrate is almost 20 per cent high-value neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) rare earths, which are critical for electric vehicle motors and renewable energy technologies. Lindian is now firmly plugged into the Western world's push for a secure, non-Chinese rare earths supply chain. The project's hefty 261-million-tonne resource grading some 2.19 per cent TREO with an ore reserve at a higher 2.9 per cent, had the company firmly on the radar of global players such as Iluka. The Australian producer has now jumped to lock in the emerging Lindian, as the federal government moves to replicate the United States and set a floor price for local rare earths production.

The NFL sold its NFL Network and Sunday RedZone television show to ESPN on Tuesday in exchange for a 10% equity stake in the US-based sports television network. Both companies announced the deal, which also includes the combining of NFL Fantasy Football with ESPN Fantasy Football. Federal regulators must approve the transaction, a process that could take several months, according to the league. Until the deal closes, fans are unlikely to see any significant changes to ESPN or NFL Network. NFL team owners also must approve the deal, but that is seen as little more than a formality given the expanded reach on offer for NFL programming. "I think we've hooked up with the best partners we can have," said New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, chairman of the NFL's media committee. "That will help expose us to more homes, more of an international audience. Strategically, we have to grow our salary cap and can only do that by -- if we want to keep labor peace, we have to grow our audience. This transaction helps us to do that." Global growth opportunities for the NFL, which already plays games overseas every season, played a key role in motivating the NFL to get terms of the deal sorted. "We're hooking up with the strongest sports amalgamation of sports product," Kraft said. "We're giving them what I believe is the best content, and they're giving us the greatest operational company to grow our audience globally. "This is a way for us to broaden our audience. We've done so much. I don't think there's any company like (ESPN owners) Disney and ESPN in doing sports, all sports. We need to expose our product to more people and a greater variety of people."
