Belal Muhammad reveals how he 'almost had foot AMPUTATED' six months ago, as he lifts lid on gruesome injury ahead of UFC 315 title showdown

Daily Mail08-05-2025

Belal Muhammad has spoken in detail for the first time about what could have been a career-ending, even life-threatening injury last year.
The UFC welterweight champion, who faces Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315 in Montreal on Saturday night, suffered a bone infection so severe that he could have had his foot amputated.
UFC legend Chael Sonnen had previously claimed Muhammad almost died, saying: 'Are you aware that it was on the fence whether he was going to live or die, all through an infection that came through his toe? You're probably not.
'When Belal was released, he dropped down to see how many push-ups he could do — five, that's what he got to.
'Anyone that got that sick, anyone who got that weak, if they've got to turn it around and be the baddest man on Earth, and they've got months to do it — I think that you would understand where there is some question.
'What a stud Belal is. He's not going to tell you anything. He is not going to tell you that he almost died, he's not going to tell you about the toe, he's not going to tell you about lying in the bed, crying. But I'm choosing to do it because he deserves credit.'

But Muhammad has in fact now spoken about the ordeal, saying: 'Since it got infected and the toe was broken, the infection went straight into the bone and got in there quicker. So it spread a lot faster.
'If it was just on the skin, then it would've been easier to deal with it and the antibiotics would've worked and it wouldn't have spread as fast but he said since the toe was broken, it went into the toe and it went into the bone right away.
'Then, it was starting to spread so he had to get in there right away.'
'He (the doctor) was like, "If you'd waited a couple more days, it would have grown up the foot. Since you're healthy, luckily most the people that have bone infections are diabetics and a lot of the time I'm cutting it right away. I'm either cutting a toe, cutting a foot – it's coming off. But, luckily for you, we'll give you four weeks, hopefully the antibiotics will kick in, it'll work and we'll see it but I see you being healthy and your body fighting it."
'Thank God it was,' Muhammad reflected.
For the American-Palestinian fighter to have recovered to the extent he steps back into the octagon this weekend is a remarkable achievement in itself.
Having beaten Leon Edwards to claim the belt last year, Muhammad is now looking to launch his reign as champion.
He has not suffered defeat since 2019 and Maddalena will know exactly what he's up against. Muhammad's aggressive wrestling approach will be aiming to shut down the Australian's fluid striking in much the same we he did against Edwards.
The main event takes place in Montreal, Canada this Saturday at around 5am UK time and Mail Sport's live blog will provide updates from the pre-lims onwards at 1am.

Eagles' Saquon Barkley: Retirement could come 'out of nowhere'

June 4 - Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is coming off a career year, complete with an NFL rushing title, a Super Bowl championship and even the cover of the "Madden 26" video game. That said, Barkley raised a few eyebrows recently when he revealed his retirement plan is similar to that of Hall of Famer Barry Sanders. "I'll probably be one of those guys that it'll be out of nowhere. I'll probably just wake up one day, whether it's next year or two years or four years, and just be like, 'Yeah, it's over,'" Barkley said on Chris Long's Green Light podcast. .".. My favorite player of all time is Barry Sanders, so probably similar to that. Maybe one day, it'll be out of nowhere -- I'll be balling and be like, yeah, call it quits." Barkley, 28, is three years younger than Sanders was when the Detroit Lions legend opted to retire on the eve of training camp in 1999. Sanders was coming off his 10th straight 1,000-yard season when he made the shocking announcement. Barkley is the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year after he led the league with 345 carries for 2,005 yards while scoring 13 touchdowns in 16 regular-season games (all starts). He also caught 33 passes for 278 yards and two TDs. He rushed 91 more times in four playoff games for 499 yards and five TDs, giving him a combined single-season record of 2,504 yards to pass Terrell Davis. Barkley has rushed 1,546 times for 7,216 yards and 48 TDs and caught 321 passes for 2,378 yards and 14 scores in 90 career games (all starts) for the New York Giants (2018-23) and Eagles. The Giants selected him second overall in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Penn State. --Field Level Media

The new warning labels Doritos and Skittles could carry in Texas

A new bill in Texas could require warning labels on snacks containing over 40 ingredients deemed unsafe in other countries but allowed in the U.S., potentially affecting popular items like Doritos, Skittles, and certain cereals. The proposed legislation targets ingredients such as synthetic food dyes and bleached flour, with warning labels set to appear on product packaging starting in 2027 if the bill becomes law. Governor Greg Abbott has less than 20 days to sign the bill, but his stance remains unclear, though he has pledged to ensure Texans have access to healthy foods. Industry groups, including food manufacturers and Walmart, have voiced strong opposition to the bill, arguing it could destabilize local economies and increase prices. If signed, the bill would not require labeling if the FDA or Department of Agriculture deems an ingredient safe, restricts its use, or bans it after September 1; Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is reportedly a supporter of the bill.

ZestyAI secures deal with Kin Insurance

ZestyAI today announced a new partnership with Kin Insurance, a direct-to-consumer, digital home insurance provider committed to serving catastrophe-exposed markets. 0 This content is provided by an external author without editing by Finextra. It expresses the views and opinions of the author. As part of its expansion into California, Kin has deployed Z-FIRE, ZestyAI's wildfire risk model, to accurately assess property-level wildfire exposure and expand access to coverage in high-risk areas. The model was integrated in just 10 days, enabling Kin to move quickly in meeting the needs of California's evolving market. California continues to face a widening insurance gap, driven by more frequent natural disasters and insurer withdrawals. This partnership supports Kin's commitment to bringing insurance options back to communities impacted by limited availability of coverage. Z-FIRE uses machine learning to evaluate each property's unique characteristics, including defensible space, building materials, topography, vegetation, and more, to predict which properties are most likely to experience a wildfire and which ones will survive. 'California requires a smarter, more modern approach to home insurance risk management,' said Michael McCright, vice president, pricing and risk management at Kin. 'ZestyAI's Z-FIRE model brings the level of insight we need to confidently assess risk and offer coverage in areas at risk of wildfire.' 'Kin's expansion into California is exactly the kind of forward-thinking move our technology was built to support,' said Attila Toth, Founder and CEO of ZestyAI. 'Together, we're helping show that with the right data and tools, insurers can re-enter challenging markets with confidence—and deliver meaningful protection to homeowners who need it most.' 'Equally important, Z-FIRE empowers insurers to recognize and reward mitigation efforts at the property level, encouraging homeowners to take action that reduces risk for themselves and their communities.' Z-FIRE's performance has been validated through real-world events: Following the recent Los Angeles wildfires, Z-FIRE's highest-risk ratings closely corresponded with the hardest-hit areas, with 94% and 87% of the areas affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires rated as High Risk by the model. Among homes located within these perimeters, those flagged as having the highest vulnerability to damage were 50% more likely to be destroyed—highlighting the critical value of property-specific insights, even in dense urban settings. ZestyAI works closely with regulators to ensure transparency, validation, and continuous monitoring of its AI-driven models. The company has secured regulatory approvals across all Western states for Z-FIRE, along with broad acceptance of its severe convective storm suite of models in Texas, Colorado, the Midwest, and the Great Plains.
