After cocoa, higher hazelnut prices to hit chocolatiers

Turkey's hazelnut harvest — the world's largest — is expected to fall by over a third this year after severe spring frost, according to the Turkish Grain Board. Production is projected at 453,000 tons, down from 717,000 tons last year. In response, the board has raised the price it pays farmers by around 50%.

Jubilant FoodWorks stays off price hikes to protect its market share
The world's biggest hazelnut crop is set to slump, spelling more bad news for chocolate lovers. The harvest in Turkey is projected to fall by more than a third after the worst spring frost in years, the country's grain board said, as it hiked the price it pays farmers for their hazelnuts by around half. That inflation presents a further headache for chocolate companies, after poor weather in Ivory Coast and Ghana pushed cocoa prices to a record high in December, forcing many popular brands to pass the increase on to customers. Nutella-maker Ferrero is the biggest buyer of hazelnuts, but most confectioners use them.Indeed, some chocolate makers have been increasing the fruit, nut and caramel content of their bars to offset high cocoa costs, while also shrinking the size of some products. Now they face another challenge. Ferrero, which makes millions of jars of hazelnut-packed Nutella every year, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the Turkish harvest."As the hazelnut price increases we either reduce the amount we use, or remove it altogether," said Kazim Tayci, vice chairman of the board of directors at Turkish confectionery firm Tayas Gida. The company has cut the hazelnut content in some of its chocolate bars from their usual 30% to as low as 10% this year, he said.Hazelnut output is forecast to drop to 453,000 tons this year from 717,000 tons in 2024 due to the April cold snap, the state-run Turkish Grain Board's general manager Ahmet Guldal said. Turkey accounts for two-thirds of global supply. The dent to the harvest is another reminder of how vulnerable the world's food supplies remain to climate change.Unpredictable weather has boosted coffee and cocoa prices, while olive oil crops have been hit by intensifying heat waves across southern Europe. The bad news from Turkey could get worse. While the board's forecast is 25% lower than a projection in May from the country's main hazelnut exporting group, Guldal signaled it could fall further as the farmers bring in the harvest over the next two months."Considering the harvest's progress, it's possible to consider this figure optimistic," he said.

Apple denies favouring ChatGPT after partnership claims, rejects Elon Musk's allegation that App Store hinders rivals

Apple has rejected allegations from Elon Musk that its App Store discriminates against competitors, insisting the platform is free and fair of bias, according to a BBC report. The remarks come after the Tesla and X chief threatened legal action, accusing Apple of making it 'impossible' for apps to rival ChatGPT-maker OpenAI in the store. Musk's criticism followed his renewed clash with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, whom he labelled a 'liar' after Altman accused him of using X to 'benefit himself and his own companies'. The dispute marks the latest escalation in a long-running feud between the two tech leaders, who co-founded OpenAI before Musk's departure from the firm. In a statement to the BBC, Apple said: 'We feature thousands of apps through charts, algorithmic recommendations and curated lists selected by experts using objective criteria.' Apple entered into a partnership with ChatGPT in June 2024 but has denied any preferential treatment. The company noted that other AI tools, including DeepSeek and Perplexity, have reached top positions in App Store rankings since then. Musk, however, continued to criticise the company online, questioning why neither X nor its AI chatbot Grok featured in the App Store's 'Must Have' section. He pointed out that X ranked as the number one news app globally and Grok was fifth among all apps, while ChatGPT topped the UK's free app chart. Official rankings show Grok in third place and X absent from the top 40. Meanwhile, tensions between the xAI chief and Sam Altman escalated further, as the public spat unfolded against the backdrop of legal proceedings in the United States. This week, District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers allowed OpenAI's claims against Musk to proceed to trial, including accusations of a 'years-long harassment campaign' involving public remarks, social media activity, court filings, and what the company describes as a 'sham bid' for its assets. The trial is expected to intensify tensions in a rivalry that has persisted for over a decade, stemming from Musk's belief that OpenAI abandoned its original founding principles.

Microsoft targets Meta's AI top talent with multimillion-dollar offers: Report

Microsoft may be looking to one-up Meta by poaching AI talent that the social media giant itself lured from other companies. The Windows maker has put together a list of the top engineers and AI researchers at Meta, according to a report by Business Insider. Microsoft is also aiming to match Meta's compensation for top AI talent as part of its new process to make its offers more competitive. This process includes directing recruiters to designate suitable candidates as 'critical AI talent' so that the company's executives can more quickly respond with a top offer to those candidates, as per the report. These offers amount to millions of dollars, including multimillion-dollar on-hire bonuses. Engineers and researchers already working at Microsoft have maximum compensation packages of $408,000 as well as $1.9 million in on-hire stock awards, $1.5 million in annual stock awards, and annual cash bonuses as high as 90 per cent, as per the company's purported internal pay guidelines. Microsoft's push to recruit top AI talent signals that it is willing to reshuffle its workforce to stay ahead in the AI race, even if it means stretching beyond its usual pay limits to outpace rivals. The move also comes against the backdrop of Microsoft's plans to axe thousands of jobs in what has shaped up to be its largest round of job cuts in a year. There are two AI teams at Microsoft, namely: Microsoft AI led by former Google DeepMind cofounder Mustafa Suleyman and CoreAI, another team led by former Meta engineering head Jay Parikh. Microsoft's internal spreadsheets reportedly show that it appears to be targeting employees working at Meta's Reality Labs, GenAI Infrastructure, and Meta AI Research divisions. Meta itself has been making nine-figure offers to lure top AI talent from other companies such as OpenAI. Shengjia Zhao, one of the creators of ChatGPT, was recently named as the chief scientist of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Mark Chen, OpenAI's research officer, has previously likened Meta's aggressive poaching spree to a home invasion. Meanwhile, OpenAI recently announced a 'special one-time award' to its AI researchers and engineers across several departments, including applied engineering, scaling, and safety. The bonuses were announced a day before the ChatGPT maker unveiled GPT-5, its latest and most advanced large language model (LLM). More than 1,000 OpenAI employees are eligible for the bonus, according to a report by The Verge. The ChatGPT-maker is currently valued at $300 billion.
