AI takes centre stage at National Eisteddfod in Wales

Rhyl Journal06-08-2025
It's a key theme at this year's National Eisteddfod, with talks and events exploring its impact through technology, language, and daily life.
The discussion is part of a wider programme in the Science and Technology Village, co-organised by M-SParc (the Menai Science Park), where a session titled "Is There AI?" will take place on Thursday at 2.45pm, chaired by Archdruid Rhys Iorwerth.
Emily Roberts, outreach and community manager at M-SParc, said: "The National Eisteddfod is a broad celebration of Welsh culture, language, and identity – but in recent years, one area has really stood out as a place where tradition meets the future: the Science and Technology Village.
"It's where innovation is presented through the Welsh language, where children learn through play, where older generations discover new technologies in an easy-to-understand way, and where everyone can enjoy amazing and unforgettable experiences.
"This village is a vital part of the Eisteddfod, offering a platform for organisations, companies, and experts to share innovative ideas, the latest developments, and exciting research.
"Whether it's about health, renewable energy, AI, or agriculture – there's something here for everyone: schoolchildren, young people, families, experts, and older generations alike.
"Come and discover the future."
The village aims to inspire visitors of all ages with hands-on activities and demonstrations designed to make science and technology accessible and fun.
One of the highlights is the M-SParc Science Show, held at the Eisteddfod for the first time this year and focused on the theme of waves.
The village aims to inspire visitors of all ages (Image: Aled Llywelyn) Ms Roberts said: "What are waves – the energy – that bring us back together and weave into our everyday lives?
"We'll be exploring sea waves, sound waves, and even the waves inside our own bodies.
"There'll be a chance to understand your heartbeat and see live how music reaches our ears.
"With something new for everyone of all ages to learn, we're encouraging people to come and remember why science is so fascinating – because it's part of all our lives, every single day.
"The show is a lot of fun."
The Science and Technology Medal will be awarded to Dewi Bryn Jones for his contributions to Welsh-language software and apps.
A tribute to Professor Glyn O. Phillips, the first recipient of the medal in 2004, will also take place on Thursday at 3pm.

Ryan Reynolds in 'incredibly awkward' meeting with new £10m Wrexham signing

Ryan Reynolds in 'incredibly awkward' meeting with new £10m Wrexham signing Ryan Reynolds spoke to ITV prior to Wrexham's first home fixture of the season. Ryan Reynolds spoke about the moment he first met new signing Nathan Broadhead. (Image: ITV ) Ryan Reynolds has revealed an awkward dressing room moment with new signing Nathan Broadhead. The Welsh club completed the club record signing of the Wales international on a £10 million deal on Thursday. ‌ ITV spoke to Reynolds and fellow co-owner Rob McElhenney prior to Wrexham's first home match of the 2025/2026 season against West Bromwich Albion. The duo had already appeared on Sky Sports to chat about the game and were in good spirits, mocking their former player and now pundit Ben Tozer. ‌ Unfortunately for Wrexham, it was a 3-2 loss to West Brom, but they have another home fixture to look forward to next weekend, against Sheffield Wednesday. ‌ Speaking about their recent investment into former Premier League striker Broadhead, Reynolds explained that he had an awkward encounter with the Welshman when they first met. "I had an incredibly awkward moment with him in the dressing room," began Reynolds. "Because in person he just looked so young. I've seen him play tonnes, I've watched him. I didn't commit (to the greeting). Article continues below "I was like: 'Hey, hi!', and I was like: 'That can't be Nathan Broadhead, he's too young', but he's 27, and he's a machine! "Now it has sunk in, I've managed to get my entire leg in my mouth, now it's sunk in." Wrexham have smashed their transfer record after buying Ipswich forward Nathan Broadhead (Image: Wrexham AFC) ‌ Asked about their spending, which is set to surpass £20 million this summer, McElhenney added: 'I don't look at that at all. "We're standing on the shoulders of giants and just look at what other clubs have done to be successful in the past. "And then at what they've done to not be successful in the past and try to avoid that as much as possible. ‌ "And that includes staying out of football business. "Our job is to tell the story, promote the club but ultimately defer to people who know about football: Phil Parkinson, Michael Harvey, Shaun Williamson, our executive team and we stay out of the way.' Speaking about the acquisition of Broadhead, boss Phil Parkinson said on Friday: "The fee has been out there at £10m but I think we have to get to the Premier League and win the Champions League to get to that," he told BBC Sport Wales. Article continues below "But it's a price for a player of real Championship quality. "The fee with Ipswich had been agreed a for a long time, obviously they wanted to sign a player so we had to be patient. "But they've been fair and both parties are happy with the deal."

First look at Marks and Spencer Christmas ad starring major White Lotus star

Christmas seems to have come early this year, with a first glimpse at Marks & Spencer's upcoming advert for the festive period. The Christmas advert scene has become something of a battleground over recent years, with retailers like Marks & Spencer, John Lewis and Waitrose all fighting it out for festive supremacy. Last year's M&S Christmas advert featured Dawn French, who came face-to-face with a Christmas fairy (also played by herself) who helped the French and Saunders icon put on a spread for her friends and family. With the year now in its back end, filming is underway for M&S's next offering, which stars White Lotus actress Aimee Lou Wood as the face of Christmas 2025. While fans still have a few months to go until the finished product makes its debut, a series of snaps have previewed what the retailer has up its sleeve… or stocking, as it were. These new images have feature the Sex Education star looking festive on set in a picturesque English town… in spite of the raging heatwave it was shot under. In these images, Aimee Lou can be seen wearing a heavy fur coat as she stands in a fake snow-covered English village, decorated with festive greenery and Christmas accoutrements. Other images show Aimee Lou with other members of the cast, including a man, another woman and young child, as they wander through the snowy scene. In the background of another picture, a fluffy dog can be seen wearing a pair of reindeer antlers. 'It's not just a dog, it's an M&S dog,' Aimee Lou is said to have joked, referencing the supermarket's famous slogan. This year's advert was filmed in the Hertfordshire town of Hatfield. Earlier this week, Hatfield local Chloe Granger shared some insight into what the retailer had planned when she shared a series of pictures from the shoot to her TikTok account. 'M&S have filmed their Christmas TV ad in my home village 🎅🏼🎄' she wrote in the caption to her post. 'It looks so festive, walking around really got me in the mood for Christmas, even though this was happening in the middle of a heatwave 😂 'Can't wait to see the ad!' she, uh, added. The accompanying montage of pictures showed how the streets of Hatfield had been transformed into something out of a Charles Dickens novel. Fake snow lined the streets and pavements, while the pictured houses were decorated with festive wreaths and Christmas presents. The local pub – The Eight Bells – had 'never looked so good,' according to Chloe, with three Christmas trees straddling the door and windows, while greenery adorned the rest of the building. Another of Chloe's snaps showed a group of topless lads walking through the 'snowy' streets, highlighting the contrast between Christmas fantasy and the reality of recent weather. In the comments below Chloe's post, followers were getting into the Christmas spirit, with TikTok user Jodi Gardner writing: 'This actually gave me goosebumps. It looks amazing 🥰' 'It's making me crave winter so much,' said Laura. 'Simply stunning,' said jodixo. More Trending Jamie Dear said: 'Omg my heart!!! This makes me so happy🥹😭' M&S shared last year's Christmas video in November 2024, so there are still a few months to go until we get to see the advert in full. It remains to be seen how they'll fare against heavy-hitter John Lewis, who have stirred the nation into a frenzy ever since their beloved 2011 effort 'Waiting,' which told the story of a young lad and his long wait for the big day.
