2 elderly women seriously injured in Burnaby hit-and-run, days after senior hit in East Vancouver
Two elderly women are in hospital with serious injuries after a hit-and-run in Burnaby on Thursday night, the second hit-and-run involving a senior pedestrian in Metro Vancouver in under a week.
Burnaby RCMP say officers were called just before 9:30 p.m. on July 17 to Willingdon Avenue and Union Street following reports of a motor vehicle collision involving two pedestrians.
When police arrived, they found two women, aged 73 and 85, suffering from serious injuries. Both were transported to hospital.
In a statement Friday, the RCMP said the driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene.
B.C. Emergency Health Services says it responded to the scene with two ambulances with primary care paramedics and an ambulance with advanced care paramedics.
"Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to two patients who were transported to hospital in serious but stable condition," said BCEHS spokesperson Brian Twaites in a statement.
Mounties say they are canvassing the area for surveillance footage and are urging anyone who saw the collision or has dashcam video to come forward.
Descriptions of the suspect and the vehicle involved have not yet been released, but police say more information will be provided "as soon as practicable."
VPD investigating separate hit-and-run in East Vancouver
The incident comes just days after a 70-year-old woman was hit by the driver of a grey SUV in East Vancouver.
Police say the woman was crossing Grandview Highway at Slocan Street shortly before 5:30 p.m. on July 11 when the vehicle hit her and continued driving eastbound without stopping.
The Vancouver Police Department says investigators are working to identify the driver and vehicle involved.
"We believe there were several bystanders who attempted to chase after the vehicle," said Const. Tania Visintin in a statement Friday. "Investigators would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision. We also want to speak to the driver of the grey SUV to determine what circumstances led up to the incident."
The woman suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.
Police in both cities are asking witnesses or anyone with relevant information to contact investigators.

Othello Tunnels reopened, but body of 19-year-old not yet found, RCMP say

(Facebook/Hope Search and Rescue) The Othello Tunnels area of Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park has reopened, but efforts to find the 19-year-old man believed to have drowned there over the weekend have so far been unsuccessful. Search and rescue efforts will resume Saturday, the RCMP's Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment RCMP said in a news release Friday. 'The pools of water where the man was last seen were thoroughly searched in hopes of locating him and providing a level of closure to his family,' said Staff Sgt. Mike Sargent, in the release. 'While he has not yet been found, search efforts remain active and ongoing.' Public access will be restricted in certain areas of the park to accommodate search efforts going forward. The missing man went into the water near the Othello Tunnels shortly after 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 26. Police have previously said a bystander was rescued by raft after becoming stranded while trying to locate the fallen man. The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team searched the area on July 30 but was unable to find the young man's body. The following day, Hope Search and Rescue continued searching from the shoreline and using drones to fly over the river.

$13K in jewelry stolen during Guelph break-in
More than $13,000 worth of jewelry was taken during a break-in at a Guelph home. It happened sometime Thursday in the area of Waverley Drive and Windsor Street.
