Wartime puzzles hide military secrets in plain sight

Telegraph5 days ago
Between May 2 and June 1, 1944, five crosswords compiled by Leonard Dawe contained D-Day codewords. These ranged from names of operations to beaches used in the planned Normandy landings.
This now seemed to be more than mere 'remarkable coincidence '. Dawe was taken to be interrogated by MI5, although he was finally released. (More on that later, but please share your guesses as to how this 'coincidence' came about in the comments!)
As well as puns and anagrams (and apparently military secrets), the puzzles of this era begin to incorporate many techniques now common in Cryptic Crosswords.
One clue requires us to insert one word inside another to arrive at the solution. Another is what's now called a charade: adding two words together to produce the solution. Yet another is a homophone.
Not all the clues are cryptic, but the modern crossword as we know it is emerging. So did you find this crossword easier than some of the earlier entries? Which clues left you stumped – and which were surprisingly gettable? Let us know in the comments.
P.S. During the war, paper shortages reduced The Telegraph newspaper to just six pages. However, the crossword was published every day without fail. Why do you think it was such an indispensable feature?

‘Explosive' thriller from Slow Horses writer with A-list stars unveils first look

Another sensational thriller from Slow Horses author Mick Herron is about to come to life on Apple TV+ An intriguing first-look at an upcoming thriller featuring some well-known names in front of and behind the camera has just been revealed. ‌ From bestselling author Mick Herron, the mastermind crime writer behind the hit Slow Horses series, comes another riveting drama on Apple TV+. ‌ Set for release later this year, Down Cemetery Road pairs two A-listers of the British screen for an eight-part descent into conspiracy and paranoia. ‌ Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson are teaming up for the new series, which is poised to keep countless streamers glued to their screens this autumn. Morwenna Banks has penned the new thriller, having previously written for Slow Horses as well as Sky drama Funny Woman. ‌ A synopsis for Down Cemetery Road reads: 'When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a girl disappears in the aftermath, neighbour Sarah Tucker (Wilson) becomes obsessed with finding her and enlists the help of private investigator Zoë Boehm (Thompson). 'Zoë and Sarah suddenly find themselves in a complex conspiracy that reveals people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead.' This wildly different premise is worlds away from Slow Horses, which sees Gary Oldman's boorish Jackson Lamb head up a team of MI5 rejects who become tangled up in high-stakes missions. ‌ Nevertheless, it's bound to excite fans of Apple TV+'s popular thriller as another one of Herron's addictive page-turners comes to life. The first images from the drama feature the duo in the midst of the action on a beach, as well as individual shots of Zoë and Sarah. ‌ Wilson's character Sarah appears to be some sort of artist as she's decked out in a blue jumpsuit and a headlamp, while Thompson is taking on a stylish new look with short hair and a leather jacket. Rounding out the main cast are a number of familiar faces from British TV, including Sherwood's Adeel Akhtar, Utopia's Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Tom Goodman-Hill of Baby Reindeer fame and Darren Boyd from Outlaws. ‌ Tom Riley, Adam Godley, Sinead Matthews, Ken Nwosu, Fehinti Balogun, Aiysha Hart and, finally, Outlander's Steven Cree are taking on supporting roles. Fans just have a little while longer to wait as the new drama will premiere with its first two episodes in October. Further plot details and a trailer will be kept under wraps for the time being, but stay tuned for updates.

Lola Young makes emotional confession as she marks reaching major milestone

Messy singer Lola Young shared with fans that she has achieved a huge milestone in her life after buying her first home as she credits years of hard work Singer Lola Young has only recently achieved global notoriety following the success of her song Messy. But the star has always maintained that she has been working tirelessly away from the glamour of being a popstar. ‌ So it's only fitting that she was overcome with emotion as she shared with fans that she has bought her first home. Lola, 24, made history after becoming the youngest British female artist to land a number one hit single since Dua Lipa, in 2017. ‌ Taking to social media last week, she told fans via a video clip: "I am currently sitting on the floor in one of the bedrooms of my new house that I have just bought. I am so proud of myself and emotional to be honest. I am so excited to start a new chapter of my life here and make memories, make so memories." This comes after Cat Deeley found moving back to the UK 'really hard' before split from Patrick Kielty. ‌ ‌ She continued: "So yeah working hard does pay off, it really does." Despite the success of Messy, her latest single d£aler, which was released last week, has already being hailed as a hit - by none other that Sir Elton John. During a recent podcast session on Apple Music with the singer, Sir Elton said: "It's unbelievable, it's the biggest smash I have heard in years." He added: "You are going to have the most incredible career, because you can sing live, you are just the whole deal." ‌ Lola was forced to address allegations that she is a "nepo" baby and an "industry plant". The first term is linked to the fact her aunt is Julia Donaldson, the author of The Gruffalo. An industry plant is someone who pretends to have grown their fame organically but instead have been placed by a record label. During an interview on Capital Buzz, Sam Pearce asked Lola: "Something that happens any time an artist blows up, the term industry plant gets thrown around, and obviously people have no idea that you've been working since 2019. How do you feel about that term?" ‌ Addressing the allegations, the star hit back saying the people making the claims are "losers that comment rubbish." She then said: "No, they don't know, otherwise they wouldn't be saying that. I think it is just the most stupid term. "I think there are cases of industry plants but so what? It doesn't mean they're not talented and it doesn't take away from anything." ‌ She added: "People are saying I'm a nepo baby because my great Aunt wrote The Gruffalo. I mean what kind of rubbish is that? I have so much to say on that which I can't even talk about. But I'm not a nepo baby, I'm not an industry plant, there we go I said it." Lola continued: "I've cleared that up for all those losers that want to comment rubbish on the internet. Just find something better to do, you're sad, you're lonely. The thing is industry plant is just a term for other artists and other people to use who just don't know what they're doing in life and feel upset that someone else is having their moment." She concluded her rant saying: "And if you are an industry plant, you're not going to have your moment for that long, unfortunately. And maybe sometimes you will, it just doesn't matter, none of these things matter. If someone's got talent, then they've got talent. Yeah, and I'm also not an industry plant at all by the way."
