Norcross breaks ground on $20 million public safety building to meet city's rapid growth
The city of Norcross has officially broken ground on a new $20 million public safety building, a project designed to address the city's population surge and evolving community needs.

Located at the corner of Buford Highway and Stevens Road, on the former site of the old Norcross Library and additional city-acquired property, the facility will house the Norcross Police Department, Municipal Court, and new community meeting spaces. Construction is expected to be completed by September 2026.
Mayor Craig Newton said the project has been years in the making and marks a major step forward for the growing city.
'This is an exciting day for Norcross. This is finally coming to fruition, ' Newton said.
Norcross has nearly doubled in size since 2011, with a population exceeding 18,000. City leaders say the current City Hall facility no longer meets the needs of public safety staff or the broader community.
'We've just outgrown City Hall, not just from the police and courts perspective, but also from our community development,' said Norcross Police Chief Bill Grogan.

At 40,000 square feet, the new building will include expanded space for mental health services, training rooms, a multipurpose event space, and even a basketball court. The features are elements that city officials say are essential for both public safety and public connection.
The building will also feature indoor-outdoor space that can host events, meetings, and recreational activities.
'It's really not just a public safety building. It's really, it's just a public building,' Grogan said.
Grogan also highlighted the importance of physical training, noting that the facility will allow for expansion of the department's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program, which he said has reduced injuries during physical encounters.
'That has allowed us to do is have less injuries to both us and to those we have to actually engage and actually have some sort of physical altercation with,' Grogan said.

Former NFL player Adam ‘Pacman' Jones arrested in Kentucky
Police in Kentucky arrested former NFL player Adam 'Pacman' Jones. Action News Jax's Ohio station, WHIO-TV, reports Jones was booked into the Kenton County Jail early Saturday morning. Jones, who is from Atlanta, faces charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct in the second degree and assault on a police officer in the third degree, according to the jail records. Arlington, Texas police arrested Jones back in November after officers said he got into a fight near AT&T Stadium after the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul boxing match, the Athletic reported. Jones played 13 years in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans, Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos. Jacksonville Armada forced to find new field after abruptly losing home
The Jacksonville Armada announced late Friday that Saturday's double header will be played on a different home field. The team usually plays its home games at Edward Waters University, but the school abruptly canceled the teams use of its facilities. The Armada will be playing Saturday's double header at Patton Park, 2850 Hodges Blvd, Jacksonville, the team said. Advertisement Edward Waters University released a statement Saturday saying, 'Due to an unforeseen and exigent administrative facilities management challenge, EWU regrettably was unable to host this weekend's contest as originally planned. We regret that this late discovery necessitated the temporary suspension of the use of our facilities for tomorrow's match.' EWU said it's working to resolve its issues so the Armada can play its final four games at the university. (See the school's full statement below.) Apple to pay $95 million in Siri eavesdropping settlement; Here's how to file your claim
Those who own Siri-enabled devices, including iPhones, MacBooks, and iPads, may be eligible to file a claim in Apple's $95 million settlement over allegations that Siri has been eavesdropping on consumers. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] As reported by CBS News, California resident Fumiko Lopez filed a lawsuit in 2021 claiming that several types of Apple devices have been eavesdropping on Apple consumers. The lawsuit claims that the private and confidential discussions Siri had allegedly listened to were being shared with third-party businesses that then targeted consumers with ads in Apple search and Safari, according to CBS News. 'Apple denies all of the allegations made in the lawsuit and denies that Apple did anything improper or unlawful,' the settlement website states. Apple agreed to the settlement earlier this year, and now consumers can file claims to get a piece of the $95 million agreement. Consumers who owned iPhones, iPads, an iPod Touch, an iMac, a MacBook, an Apple Watch, an AppleTV, and/or a HomePod could all be eligible for payment. The amount consumers could earn ultimately depends on how many people file claims, but CBS News reported there's a cap of $20 per Siri-enabled device that a person owns. Apple consumers can file a claim for as many as five Siri-enabled devices, for a maximum payout of $100, according to the settlement site. To submit a claim, visit the settlement website here. The settlement's final approval hearing is scheduled for August 1, 2025, at 9 a.m., but there could be an appeal that would delay the payout, as reported by CBS News. The settlement payment will not come until later this year at the earliest. There is no confirmed date.
