Over $113K worth of rare Pokémon cards stoken from Massachusetts store

NBC News11-07-2025
A brazen thief stole more than $113,000 worth of Pokémon cards from a Massachusetts store, officials said Friday, launching a real-life Pokémon Go search for the suspect and the rare collectibles.
The break-in at 1st Edition Collectibles on Purchase Street in New Bedford, about 60 miles outside downtown Boston, occurred just after 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, police said. The thief "broke in and stole several high-value collectible items," New Bedford police spokesperson Holly Huntoon said in a statement.
No arrests had been made as of late Friday morning.
"It sucks. I mean, you work hard, and obviously, something like this happening is not a good" thing, store co-owner Sean Vieira told NBC News. "But I mean, it's just money. No one died. So, I mean, it's down to the world."
Store owners placed the loss at about $113,650.
The stolen Pokémon cards are so rare and valuable that local collectors would be able to recognize them on the market, Vieira said.
The store had surveillance cameras, but police have told owners not to disclose many details of the heist as detectives continue their search.
Nine summers ago, the Pokémon Go smartphone app was released, sending fans of the fictional Japanese characters into semi-virtual searches on their local streets.
Now, Pokémon collectors can help search for these stolen cards similarly.
"It's definitely one of those things that I would say that's (the stolen merchandise) pretty easily identifiable for sure," Vieira said.
"The cards have serial numbers, and no boxes are the same. So there are imperfections in the boxes that we could probably use to identify, you know, the exact one. Again, it's not a lot of them out there," he added.

Special education teacher groomed student with nudes and sex toy video

Rikki Laughlin, 26, sent multiple nude pictures and a video of her using a sex toy to the student on the social media app before attempting to pressure him into having sex A married special education teacher has pleaded guilty to sending nudes to a 16-year-old student on Snapchat and pressuring him to have sex. Rikki Laughlin, 26, sent multiple nude pictures and a video of her using a sex toy to the student on the social media app. The student reportedly told authorities that 'things progressed fast' after the Snapchat messages and that he and Laughlin had kissed. The teenager "made excuses" because "he did not feel comfortable" when the teacher tried to take things further, police heard. It comes after a teacher who "murdered hikers in front of their kids' was "cold" to his students. Laughlin pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child creating substantial risk. She was a teacher at St. James High School in Missouri at the time of the crimes between September 8 and October 19, 2023. Laughlin was sentenced to five years of probation last week. It comes after a primary school teacher who searched for "Japanese schoolgirls" and "jailbait" was sacked after police discovered he shared indecent images and videos of children as young as six. Steven Spong, 30, had been teaching at Monkwick Junior School in Colchester when he was arrested in July, 2022, after authorities found he uploaded child abuse images online. In October 2022, he was fired by the school following a police investigation into his conduct. Police decided to take no further action against Spong because the images were not found on his devices. Instead, he was referred to Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA). The misconduct hearing, which was held this year, heard how police identified 16 videos and images that had been uploaded to the internet from Spong's home IP address. They included nine videos in category A, the most serious kind. Some of the children in the images were as young as six years old. The other uploads included two Category B videos, one Category B image, two Category C images and one Category C video. Spong also confessed to searching for "Japanese teenagers" and "Japanese schoolgirls" to find pornographic images of people that looked under 18-years-old, along with the term "jailbait." Spong denied any wrongdoing during disciplinary proceedings and the police investigation but admitted the facts in full ahead of the misconduct hearing. He also admitted that his conduct was sexually motivated. Decision maker Marc Cavey said: "The panel noted that, whilst the conduct took place outside the education setting, the nature of the alleged conduct relates directly to the conduct expected of those within the teaching profession and the standards which they are expected to uphold."

Lewis said that she and her friends heard shots and then watched in horror as a wall of glass on the first floor shattered, she told NBC News. "I realized, 'Oh my God this is a shootout,'" she said. "It felt like I was in a warzone." The witness said she then saw a worker "frantically" sprint out of the building as he screamed a plea to the public outside. "Help, help, I've been shot!" the man yelled, according to Lewis. Lewis noticed that the man appeared to have a wound on his front and back and said that she and her partner helped to get his backpack off before they all ran to safety. CTE CLAIMS In a rambling handwritten note found near Tamura, the gunman blamed the NFL for his alleged health issues. He claimed that he was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which has been found in some pro football players after they died by suicide. The shooter begged, "study by brain please" in the three-page letter and even apologized for his sick actions. He also referenced Terry Long - an NFL player who was suffering from the condition when he died after drinking a full gallon of antifreeze.
