PETALING JAYA: Countries from around the world are seeking to negotiate a deal with Washington within the 90-day pause of higher tariffs announced by the United States, and South-East Asia is no exception.
The 90-day pause, which started on April 9, is scheduled to end in early July.
Asean is negotiating tariffs imposed by the United States with a mix of individual country efforts and a focus on regional coordination.
To find out how much Asean collectively exports to the United States and identify its top exports, The Star pored over figures from various sources.
They include the International Trade Centre's (ITC) Trade Map, the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR), US Census Bureau and media reports.
Some figures vary by source, but they all indicate that the United States heavily relies on imports from South-East Asia for a wide variety of goods ranging from electrical machinery to furniture.
Below are five charts explaining Asean's trade with the United States.
Asean's 10-member countries exported a combined total of US$358.56bil worth of goods to the United States last year, according to the ITC Trade Map.
The 27 country European Union was first, followed by Mexico, China, and Canada.
The ITC Trade Map's figures show that exports from Asean made up 10.67% of the total US$3.36tril worth of goods which the United States imports.
The USTR website meanwhile cites a lower figure for Asean's exports to the United States, which it said stood at US$352.3bil last year.
It said that goods imports from Asean to the United States went up by 13.3% last year compared to 2023.
Vietnam was Asean's largest exporter to the United States last year, delivering goods valued at US$142.48bil, according to the ITC Trade Map.
Its figures indicate Malaysia is Asean's third largest exporter to the United States.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told a special Dewan Rakyat sitting on May 5 that Malaysia's exports to the United States stood at RM199bil in 2024.
Anwar said that exports to the United States made up 13% of Malaysia's total exports.
Electrical machinery and equipment is the top category of goods exported by Asean to the United States.
Industrial machinery is second, followed mechanical appliances and components.
The ITC Trade Map's figures show that Malaysia is Asean's second biggest exporter of electrical machinery and equipment to the United States after Vietnam.
Last year, Malaysia shipped US$28.43bil worth of electrical machinery and equipment to the United States, while Vietnam exported US$42.57bil.
Electrical machinery and equipment were the main exports from six Asean countries to the United States, namely Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, and Laos.
Singapore's main export to the United States is pharmaceutical products while Cambodia's main exports comprises of apparel and clothing accessories.
Some Asean countries lead the region in terms of its US exports for certain types of goods.
Thailand, for example, is the regional leader in terms of car exports to the United States, shipping US$2.59bil of vehicles to America last year.
Malaysia meanwhile leads in the export of aircraft parts to the United States, which stood at US$0.45bil in 2024.

Japanese tariff negotiator arranging seventh visit to US
TOKYO: Japan's tariff negotiator Ryosei Akazawa is arranging his seventh visit to the United States for as early as June 26, aiming to end tariffs that are hurting Japan's economy, two Japanese government sources said on Tuesday. The main focus of the visit is expected to be on US tariffs imposed on Japanese automobiles, which have a severe impact on the Japanese economy. Akazawa will also meet with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and others who oversee this area, one of the sources said. The meeting would be the first ministerial-level tariff negotiation since the Japan-US summit held in Canada on June 16. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and US President Donald Trump agreed to push ahead with trade talks when they met in Canada but failed to achieve a tariff deal. Last month, Japan's trade negotiator said US defence equipment purchases, shipbuilding technology collaboration, a revision of automobile import standards and an increase in agricultural imports could be bargaining chips in tariff talks. In a bid to reach an agreement with the US, Japan is also proposing a mechanism to reduce the auto tariff rate based on how much countries contribute to the U.S. auto industry.

Revamped venture capital tax scheme offers 5pct rate to spur start-ups
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has approved enhancements to the venture capital (VC) tax incentive framework to further strengthen the local ecosystem. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the VC ecosystem remains modest at US$429 million (about RM1.8 billion) in funding in 2024. To support the ecosystem, he said the revamped tax incentive scheme offers a concessionary tax rate of five per cent for up to 10 years to eligible fund entities that allocate at least 20 per cent of their funds to local start-ups. He added that the scheme also includes a 10 per cent tax rate for VC and private equity (PE) management companies registered with the Securities Commission, subject to meeting the necessary substance requirements. "This incentive now extends to onshore limited liability partnership structures, further broadening the investor base to deepen the available pool of capital for local start-ups," Amir Hamzah said. Amir Hamzah said this during his speech at the appointment ceremony for fund managers under Jelawang Capital's emerging fund managers' programme and regional fund managers' initiative. He noted that Bank Negara Malaysia will facilitate a more efficient and investor-friendly application process under the foreign exchange policy (FEP) framework. He said VC and PE firms may now apply based on their fund mandate size, rather than on a transactional basis, for cross-border fundraising and investments exceeding standard FEP limits. "This streamlines VC and PE operations, enabling capital to move more efficiently across Malaysia's borders and boosting our regional competitiveness," he said. Amir Hamzah added that the reforms in the VC ecosystem mark meaningful progress in positioning the nation as a globally competitive hub for venture and private capital. "This is the courage to reform and enable, to translate ambition into access and potential into partnership.

Malaysia rallies ASEAN against transnational crime under 2025 chairmanship
PUTRAJAYA – As part of Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) is proudly fulfilling its responsibility to lead the regional security agenda, driving forward strategic initiatives to combat transnational crime and deepen ASEAN cooperation. In a strong start to the year, MOHA hosted several high-impact meetings addressing critical cross-border threats. The first of these was the 3rd SOMTC Working Group Meeting on General Transnational Crime Matters, held on 4 February 2025 in Johor Bahru. At the meeting, the SOMTC priority areas were reviewed, and the establishment of a SOMTC Working Group on Money Laundering was proposed — a bold step to strengthen regional efforts against financial crimes. Momentum continued in Penang, where MOHA convened back-to-back engagements on 18 and 19 February 2025: the 39th Meeting of the ASEAN Heads of Specialist Anti-Trafficking Units (HSU) and the inaugural SOMTC Working Group Meeting on People Smuggling. These platforms provided opportunities for ASEAN Member States to exchange intelligence, share best practices, and align regional strategies in tackling human trafficking and people smuggling. As Chair of ASEAN 2025, Malaysia — through MOHA — has been entrusted with leading the development of two major policy documents: the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime (2026–2035) and the SOMTC Work Programme (2026–2028). In support of this effort, an Ad Hoc SOMTC Working Group Meeting on the Draft ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime (2026–2035) was held from 14 to 16 May 2025. Both documents will be discussed at the upcoming 25th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) in Putrajaya and are expected to shape the next decade of ASEAN's crime prevention agenda. This effort underscores ASEAN's commitment to inclusive and security-oriented integration. Through these initiatives, MOHA is not only reinforcing Malaysia's commitment to regional peace and security but also affirming the country's role as a driving force behind a safer, more resilient ASEAN.
