Gary Lineker breaks silence on Match of the Day exit
The former footballer added that he 'didn't like the damage' done by his controversial tweeting.
The 64-year-old outgoing MOTD host will leave the corporation after fronting its coverage of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Lineker, who has worked as a presenter on the programme since 1999, told the BBC's Amol Rajan: 'It's time (to leave).

"I've done it for a long time, it's been brilliant, it's been great… Well, perhaps they want me to leave… There was a sense of that."
Lineker added: "I always wanted one more contract. It was their preference that I didn't do Match Of The Day for one more year so they could bring in new people, so it's slightly unusual that I would do the FA Cup and the World Cup, but, to be honest, it's a scenario that suits me perfectly."
Last year, the director of BBC Sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, said he would be 'hugely missed' on MOTD when his contract extension was announced.

A trio of presenters, Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan, will replace him on MOTD.
Lineker was also grilled about the furore in March 2023 over his tweet comparing the then British government's asylum policy with 1930s Germany.
The former England striker was briefly taken off air, and other sports journalists and presenters walked out in solidarity, before he returned to fronting MOTD.
Lineker said: 'I don't regret saying them publicly, because I was right – what I said, it was accurate – so not at all in that sense."

"No, I wouldn't, because of all the nonsense that came with it… It was a ridiculous overreaction that was just a reply to someone that was being very rude.
"And I wasn't particularly rude back."
The presenter also said the BBC should 'have ignored it, and it would have been fine', and called the corporation 'silly' for its 'overreaction' in taking him off air.
His tweets, which sparked a row about BBC presenters expressing political views on social media, led to enhanced rules for BBC flagship presenters, including a ban on making attacks on political parties.

Lineker has been the BBC's highest-paid on-air talent for seven consecutive years and was estimated to have earned £1.35 million in the year 2023/24, according to the corporation's annual report published in July.

When he stepped down, it was reported that he was open to staying on at MOTD but was not offered a new deal for the show.
He will also host BBC Sport's coverage of the FA Cup in the 2025-26 season, continue with the MOTD Top Ten podcast and the BBC will also host The Rest Is Football podcast, featuring Lineker, on BBC Sounds.
The BBC declined to comment on Lineker's remarks.

EastEnders star to quit BBC soap after four years 'to look for other opportunities'
Bobby Brazier who plays Freddie Slater in EastEnders is set to leave the iconic BBC soap in by the end of the year. Bobby Brazier is set to leave Albert Square as his time on EastEnders is over after a four-year stint. The actor and model, known for his role as Freddie Slater, has gained a lot of attraction and offers following his time on Strictly Come Dancing in 2023 where he finished runner-up. The 22-year-old's exit from Walford is scheduled for later this year, the Mirror reports. As an EastEnders spokesperson confirmed: "We can confirm that Bobby Brazier will be leaving EastEnders, and we wish him all the best for the future.' A source close to the show, told The Sun: "Bosses recently met with Bobby to discuss a potential storyline, but Bobby felt this was the right moment to explore new ventures beyond the series. "The timing aligned perfectly for both parties. Although his final scenes are some time away, the character has enjoyed a strong run, and now is the time for Bobby to pursue fresh opportunities while EastEnders bids farewell to Freddie Slater." Bobby's departure from EastEnders comes amid a wave of bold casting moves by new executive producer Ben Wadey, who's reviving the drama by bringing back fan favourites including Michelle Ryan (Zoe Slater), Jake Wood (Max Branning), and Max Bowden (Ben Mitchell). 'Meghan's an influencer, Sophie has real influence': Royal expert's damning verdict on Harry's wife 'wasting her potential' on jam and rosé - while Duchess of Edinburgh visits war zones and champions women's rights
Meghan Markle is a self-proclaimed feminist and vowed to continue her work for women's advocacy even when she stepped down from official royal duties with Prince Harry. But since the launch of her Netflix series and lifestyle brand, As Ever, it's another royal who was become synonymous with working tirelessly in the women's rights realm, while Meghan's public persona is all jam and flower sprinkles. Just last week, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, was at the Imperial War Museum to visit the UK's first exhibition on the victims of sexual violence in conflict and gave an impassioned speech, where she spoke movingly about a visit she made to Kosovo in 2019 and the 'shame and stigma' of the rape survivors she met. Discussing the horror of the many women who fell pregnant by their attackers, she said: 'The stigma that is sadly placed on the women….it's about the mothers. In so many countries they can't even go back into the home place.' Her previous podcast, Archetypes, which aired on Spotify in 2022, explored the labels and stereotypes that hold women back. The series featured interviews with notable figures like Serena Williams, Mariah Carey, and Paris Hilton. While successful in its first season, the podcast did not get renewed for a second season, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Spotify deal was terminated.
