KUCHING (May 17): SMK Saribas in Debak, Betong has been successfully reconstructed under the 'Design and Build' method to provide students with a more conducive and modern learning environment.
Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the school, previously in a dilapidated condition, underwent reconstruction beginning in May 2023, with a total cost of RM10.15 million.
'The Certificate of Completion (CPC) was issued on March 4 this year,' he said during the handing over of the project in Debak today.
The Kapit MP noted that the project reflects the Madani government's continued commitment to enhancing Sarawak's educational ecosystem, particularly through the development of modern, well-equipped infrastructure in rural areas.
The reconstruction project included the construction of an indoor hall, two new classrooms, a Visual Arts Education room, and two Class F teacher housing units.
Additionally, the project involved the demolition of the old Block SAGA and a staff quarters block to make way for the new facilities.
'This project also adopts Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology and Industrialised Building System (IBS) technology to improve construction quality and productivity.
'The design uses the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) approach where the building is built not only to meet educational needs but also to be sustainable, resilient and suitable for all, including people with disabilities,' said Nanta.
He said the upgraded space is now more comfortable and ergonomic, environmentally friendly, and features improved natural lighting and ventilation while designed for ease of maintenance
Nanta expressed his appreciation to the Works Ministry for its trust and collaborative efforts in overseeing the project until its successful completion.
'The experience and lessons learned are very useful for guidance in the implementation of similar projects in the future.' alexander nanta linggi reconstruction school SMK Saribas

IPOH: The Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025, to be held at Lumut Waterfront from June 13 to 15, will feature a range of engaging activities, including satellite programmes with the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), the local fishing community, and religious events. The Prime Minister's Department, through the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit (PACU), said the programme is organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) as the lead ministry, with the Perak state government as host. With the theme 'Pendidikan Tinggi Pemacu Negara MADANI', this year's edition focuses on the vital role of higher learning institutions in national development. 'This Perak PMR will highlight the role of universities and colleges in shaping policies and driving initiatives based on knowledge, research, innovation, and critical thinking. 'It will also feature public outreach services, community welfare programmes, leadership engagement sessions, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities by government-linked companies (GLCs), in line with efforts to bring government services closer to the people and promote MADANI values,' PACU said in a statement. Visitors can also look forward to mobile service counters from federal and state ministries and agencies, local authorities, and a special showcase by the state government. The Perak Sejahtera 2030 agenda will be promoted through development booths expected to draw public attention. The programme will run from 9 am to 10 pm on Friday and Saturday, and from 9 am to 6 pm on Sunday. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the event, which will also be attended by senior leaders from both federal and state governments. PACU Strategic Programme director Mohd Zainuddin Mohd Noor said one of the main satellite events is the Kenduri Rakyat MADANI with RMN personnel, which the Prime Minister will attend on June 15. Other activities include a community event with fishermen in Kampung Datuk Seri Kamarudin on June 21, and religious programmes at Felcra Gugusan Lekir on June 20 and 21, organised by FELDA's regulatory division. Meanwhile, MOHE's Management Services Division secretary, Mohd Fazli Said, said the Perak PMR will also showcase the success and contributions of Malaysia's higher education system, particularly in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). 'Over the three-day event, we will offer various services and education opportunities, especially for SPM and STPM school leavers interested in furthering their studies. 'There will also be demonstrations of TVET students' skills, such as free motorcycle inspection services by polytechnic students,' he said.

Anwar laments poor reading culture, says Malaysians must move beyond social media rants
KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysians to read more, lamenting the nation's poor reading culture which he said remains far from ideal despite ongoing efforts. He said this reality is at odds with the aspirations of the MADANI government, which is anchored on the values of conviction and a deep appreciation for knowledge. 'Reading has not yet become a culture in our country, and to me, that is disheartening. When we speak of a MADANI nation, it is one that is rooted in conviction and love for knowledge,' he said. How can we claim to love knowledge if we only rely on speeches, opinions... sometimes filled with insults, but not grounded in knowledge? 'Reading just four lines or listening to two-minute rants on social media and forming conclusions, this world is challenging and it demands individuals with deep knowledge,' he said during his speech at the closing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair (PBAKL) 2025 here today. Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka director-general Dr Hazami Jahari and PBAKL 2025 organising chairman Mohd Khair Ngadiron. — Bernama
