Habz sent the partisan crowd into raptures by becoming the sixth fastest man over 1,500m of all time, riding the coattails of two pacemakers to clock 3:27.49 for a meet record and new French best. In a shockingly fast race, Kenya's Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech set a world junior record in second, while 11 of the next 12 athletes all timed personal bests, including national records for the Netherlands, Belgium and South Africa.
'It's incredible, there's no other word for it,' said the 31-year-old Morocco-born Habz, twice a minor medalist at European indoors. 'It's truly a dream come true. To succeed in a race like this in Paris is even stronger.' There were a rash of further meet records in perfect, hot conditions at Stade Charlety. American Stark clocked 12.21sec in the 100m hurdles to go joint fifth fastest of all time, holding off Nigeria's 2022 world champion and world record holder Tobi Amusan. 'I wanted to break that 12.3 so bad!' Stark said. 'It feels that I can have a party. 'And then, I just need to keep working, taking it race by race, stay focused and stay quiet.'
Dominican Republic's Marileidy Paulino made no mistake in the women's 400m although she had to pull out all stops down the home straight to outpace Bahraini rival Salwa Eid Naser. Paulino, gold medalist at last year's Paris Olympics and the 2023 worlds in Budapest, made it three victories in a row at Charlety in 48.81sec, four-hundredths ahead of Naser. American Rai Benjamin also racked up a meet record of 46.93sec in the 400m hurdles, making easy work of the victory in the absence of Norwegian arch-rival Karsten Warholm and Brazilian Alison Dos Santos. 'Sub-47 is impressive. I just ran smart and ran for the win,' said Benjamin.
'A little scared'
Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma lit up the 2023 edition of the Meeting de Paris by smashing the previous world record (7:52.11) for the 3,000m steeplechase. There was disaster at the Paris Olympics, however, after Girma fell heavily in the last lap of the Stade de France track. But he made a winning return to Stade Charlety, winning in 8:07.01 after admitting he had overcome a sense of dread.
'This is a big thing for me today, especially after the Paris Olympics,' Girma said. 'It feels it was a long time ago, so this was very important for me. This is a very big achievement, so I am very happy.' 'I was a little scared at first getting into the race. Now that the race is finished I feel much better.' Morocco's Sofiane El Bakkali is the two-time Olympic steeplechase champion, but he opted to race the 5,000m in Paris alongside the Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha, who claimed his 11th Diamond League victory in 12:47.84.
Kenya's Faith Cherotich ran a world lead of 8:53.37 in the women's steeplechase, holding off Uganda's Peruth Chemutai. Australia's Nicola Olyslagers, a two-time world indoor champion who has won twice in Paris (2021, 2023), won the women's high jump with a best of 2.00m. Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh, the world and Olympic champion who set the current world record of 2.10 meters at last year's Diamond League meet in Paris, finished second with 1.97m on countback from another Australian, Eleanor Patterson.
Grant Holloway, the three-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist making his return to action after a disastrous opening outing in China, could only finish fifth in the 110m hurdles, albeit in a season's best of 13.11sec. It was his US teammate Trey Cunningham who won in a personal best of 13.00sec, ahead of Dylan Beard, also in a PB of 13.02sec, while Jason Joseph set a Swiss record of 13.07 for third. And Spain's Mohamed Attaoui picked an inside line to outpace the American duo of Josh Hoey and Bryce Hoppel in what he called a 'brutal' 800m in a season's best of 1:42.73. — AFP

Monster birdie gives heckled MacIntyre 4-stroke BMW lead
WASHINGTON: Robert MacIntyre closed with a 41-foot birdie putt to grab a four-stroke lead over top-ranked Scottie Scheffler after Saturday's third round of the US PGA Tour BMW Championship. The 29-year-old Scotsman, runner-up to J.J. Spaun at June's US Open, fired a two-under par 68 to stand on 16-under 194 after 54 holes at Caves Valley in suburban Baltimore. 'The day was tough,' MacIntyre said. 'It wasn't the plain sailing of the first two days, but I thought I managed it well. 'It was steady. Holed some nice par putts, missed a couple of chances I felt I could have got, but the pins were absolutely brutal.' As for his electrifying final putt, MacIntyre said, ''Holing that putt is a massive boost going into tomorrow. That one shot is everything out here.' US star Scheffler, whose four victories this season include major triumphs at the PGA Championship and British Open, fired a 67 to finish on 198 but clutch putting by MacIntyre kept him from closing the gap as they battled down the back nine. 'I did some good stuff out there. I would have liked to have been a little sharper with my irons,' said Scheffler. 'I did a good job of staying patient. Would have liked to make a few more birdies, but overall for how I was hitting it, not a terrible score. 'Bob has got a four-shot lead going into tomorrow. He's playing some great golf and it's up to me to go out there and chase him down.' Sweden's Ludvig Aberg was third on 200 after shooting 68 with England's Harry Hall and American Sam Burns on 202 and England's Tommy Fleetwood and American Maverick McNealy on 203. MacIntyre's two PGA wins came last year at the Canadian and Scottish Opens, the Canada victory coming after his only prior PGA 54-hole lead. The Scotsman shushed a heckler after making a clutch par putt at the 14th hole. 'He was just jeering. He was just shouting I missed it - he's pushed it. Pushed it right in the middle of the hole, I guess,' MacIntyre said. 'I'll give as good back as I get. There was obviously a couple of shouts. But there's plenty of security there that are hearing it and seeing it, and I did see them talk to a few people. I don't know if anyone was thrown out, but there was plenty of people to talk to.' MacIntyre warned he's not one to be heckled, adding, 'It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog and I grew up fighting to be in this position.' MacIntyre, who led Scheffler by five when the day began, opened with a bogey after finding a greenside bunker but birdied the par-five fourth from inside three feet then sank a seven-foot birdie putt at the ninth to lead by four at 15-under. Scheffler had tap-in birdies at the fourth and seventh holes, birdied the 11th from 14 feet but missed a par putt at 12 from just beyond 10 feet to fall four back, MacIntyre parring from just inside seven feet at 12. Scheffler rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt at the 14th but despite the heckler MacIntyre sank a clutch par putt from just outside seven feet at 14 -- his fourth par putt of the day made from beyond six feet. Ace for Bhatia The BMW is the second PGA playoff FedEx Cup event, with the top 30 in season points advancing to next week's Tour Championship in Atlanta. American Akshay Bhatia, battling for one of the last spots in Atlanta, aced the 227-yard par-three 17th hole with a five-iron. He shot 66 to stand on 210 thanks in part to his first PGA hole-in-one and his sixth overall. 'When that golf ball goes in, it was the craziest thing in the world,' Bhatia said. Pogba watches as Monaco start Ligue 1 season with a win
PARIS: Paul Pogba watched as Monaco easily beat Le Havre 3-1 in their Ligue 1 opener on Saturday as Lyon won away at Lens. On Friday French giants Marseille suffered a first-day upset 1-0 at 10-man Rennes. In Saturday's late game last season's fourth-placed team Nice fell 1-0 at home to Toulouse, but Monaco and Lyon avoided upsets. Georges Mikautadze scored the only goal as Lyon won 1-0 in northern France while 2018 World Cup winner Pogba's appearance in the locker room at the Louis II Stadium was one of the highlights of the first half of Monaco's game. Dressed in a vintage Monaco jersey, a cap on his head, and a big smile on his face, Pogba saw his team quickly take the measure of an outclassed Le Havre. Midfielder Pogba signed a two-year contract with Monaco from Juventus this summer in a bid to relaunch his career back home in France. The former Manchester United player had made only 12 appearances across the last three seasons due to injuries, suspension and an extortion case in which he was the victim. However, to see Pogba in a Monaco jersey, fans will have to wait a little longer, along with Guinea-Bissau forward Ansu Fati, the club's other big summer signing. Trafford makes first senior appearance for club after returning for second spell WOLVERHAMPTON: Manchester City signaled their intent to take back the Premier League title as Erling Haaland struck twice in a 4-0 win at Wolves on Saturday to begin their campaign. Haaland was denied the chance to net a hat-trick as he was replaced by Cherki 17 minutes from time. Tougher tests of this new-look City are around the corner with Tottenham, Brighton, Arsenal and Manchester United in their next four league games.
