ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WKRG) — For many, the perfect memorial day weekend all starts with a boat ride, but you don't want it to end with a ticket.

'A lot of times we found this to be a bigger weekend and 4th of July weekend,' Officer Caleb Winfield with the Orange Beach Police Department's Marine Division said.
Memorial Day weekend is the official kickoff to summer here in Orange Beach and police said they're gearing up for the crowds.
'Everybody's looking for a good time and everybody's looking to get some of that sunshine and so we expect to be full throttle this weekend,' Officer Winfield said.
It may look calm out on the water now, but that won't last long.
'Expect a lot of heavy traffic this weekend and a lot of people to be out as long as the weather's nice, which that's what the forecast is calling for,' Officer Winfield said.
Police said one of the biggest issues they see on busy holiday weekends all starts with the person behind the wheel.
'Being unfamiliar with the area and the waterways coupled with all the restrictions, with the no wake boundaries and the no motor zones are really big problem,' Officer Winfield added.
Officers also see many alcohol-related issues like boating under the influence and public intoxication.
'You know, the longer you're out here, the more you're under the sun and baking, the higher the effects can be on you,' Officer Winfield said. 'If you're out here and you're consuming alcoholic beverages, the importance of hydrating throughout the day with water and trying to keep that balance.'

Their message to boaters is simple, follow the rules, have fun and enjoy a safe Memorial Day weekend.

'He was trying to help': Guest dies in stabbing at Anchorage hotel
Jun. 10—A 27-year-old was arrested Monday in the fatal stabbing of a man Saturday night at the Chelsea Inn Hotel in the Spenard neighborhood. Anchorage police said officers found 25-year-old Michael Kaskey in the lobby with what court documents described as a stab wound in his abdomen. He was pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts from medics, they said. The hotel's owner said Kaskey was a guest helping control access. Matthew Alexie, 27, was arrested Monday on charges of second-degree murder and evidence tampering, police said. The stabbing occurred after Alexie, along with three others, approached the hotel on Saturday night, according to a sworn statement filed by Officer Troy Clark with the criminal complaint. Kaskey was collecting a $20 fee at the front door, it said. Kaskey confronted a woman in Alexie's group after she came through the door and didn't pay, the statement said. Alexie could be seen on surveillance video holding a large knife as the group approached the hotel, it said. A witness said Alexie tried to get between the woman and Kaskey, who pushed Alexie, Clark wrote. The witness said they saw Alexie "push" Kaskey back, the statement said, at which point Kaskey fell and rolled down the stairs. Alexie was pushed out of the hotel, according to the complaint. Surveillance video didn't show the pushing or stabbing but did show Alexie afterward, "posturing, while holding the knife," Clark wrote. The hotel's owner said the fee was established to limit the number of non-guests coming inside to use the bathroom or loiter inside. He said there may be 20 or 30 people in the parking lot some evenings. Police distributed photos of Alexie and the Chevrolet Suburban he left in to officers, the statement said. The police department did not publicly provide a detailed account of the incident until Monday evening. Police spokesman Chris Barraza on Tuesday said the timing of the account reflected when additional information was available and when the update was approved by the homicide unit. Officers tracked the Suburban to a Government Hill address, the statement said. That's where Alexie was arrested on Monday, Barraza said. Alexie was jailed at the Anchorage Correctional Complex as of Tuesday. His first court appearance was Monday afternoon. The Chelsea Inn and surrounding area have been the scene of numerous murder or attempted murder investigations in recent years including fatal shootings on Memorial Day in 2023 and in October 2020. The building managers and owners are cooperating with the police investigation, Barraza said. Owner Soo Seo said Tuesday that Alexie was known to staff and they may have been trying to keep the group out on Saturday night when the encounter occurred. Seo said he has struggled with managing the numbers of people who congregate in his parking lot, in numbers he described as 20 or 30 at times. He said he would like to see additional police patrols in the area. Kaskey was a guest who volunteered to help the front desk staff the night he was stabbed. "He was trying to help," Seo said.

(WKRG) — A former Bayou La Batre police officer who was arrested in November has now been arrested again, has learned. MCSO: One detained in Eight Mile shooting on Markris Circle According to a Mobile County Sheriff's Office news release, B.J. Squires was arrested today after violating the terms of his bond. Squires was arrested in November following an investigation by the sheriff's office and the Mobile County District Attorney's Office. That investigation led to a grand jury indictment on charges of first-degree rape, second-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree sexual abuse, the release said. The terms of his bond required Squires to 'not depart from State,' but the DA's office received information that Squires had gone to a baseball game in Biloxi, Miss., June 5, the release said. The DA's office immediately filed a motion to revoke Squires' bond and signed a warrant for his arrest, the release said. Hundreds run across iconic Mobile bridge to help Africatown Mobile County Sheriff's deputies found Squires today and arrested him, along with two other individuals, on Dauphin Island Parkway, the release stated. Chicago pastor leads public prayer for city's safety and fallen CPD officer
CHICAGO — In a parking lot off 87th Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway, you'll find a weekly gathering in the summer where the community is invited to pray. 'This is my sixth year coming out here every Monday in between Memorial Day and Labor Day to pray for the city, pray for the violence,' Pastor Donovan Price said. Price leads the sessions in a welcoming setting where even his shoes send a message to walk by faith. 'Because we know prayer has some power. Prayer changes things,' he said. During this week's prayer, the group honored the life of fallen Chicago police officer Krystal Rivera and prayed for the safety of the Chicago Police Department. Fallen CPD officer remembered for courage and compassion by loved ones and colleagues 'When an officer is killed, then a member of the family has been lost. A pillar of the community has been lost,' Price said. Rivera, four-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was killed after another officer unintentionally shot her during a call on the city's South Side last week. 'We're praying for peace, for her family's heart and spirit. We're praying for some level of understanding for her daughter. We're praying for her partner that he might have some peace,' Price said. 'And there's part of us that should be praying for those who caused this situation in the first place.' Suspect held in connection with accidental fatal shooting of Chicago officer Through some clapping and some singing, they hope to bring peace and healing throughout the city. 'We're thankful for all those who are still making it, trying to make it through,' Price said.
