Orange Beach Marine Police on patrol Memorial Day weekend

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WKRG) — For many, the perfect memorial day weekend all starts with a boat ride, but you don't want it to end with a ticket. Some Foley offices closing, service schedules changing for Memorial Day holiday 'A lot of times we found this to be a bigger weekend and 4th of July weekend,' Officer Caleb Winfield with the Orange Beach Police Department's Marine Division said. Memorial Day weekend is the official kickoff to summer here in Orange Beach and police said they're gearing up for the crowds. 'Everybody's looking for a good time and everybody's looking to get some of that sunshine and so we expect to be full throttle this weekend,' Officer Winfield said. It may look calm out on the water now, but that won't last long. 'Expect a lot of heavy traffic this weekend and a lot of people to be out as long as the weather's nice, which that's what the forecast is calling for,' Officer Winfield said. Police said one of the biggest issues they see on busy holiday weekends all starts with the person behind the wheel. 'Being unfamiliar with the area and the waterways coupled with all the restrictions, with the no wake boundaries and the no motor zones are really big problem,' Officer Winfield added. Officers also see many alcohol-related issues like boating under the influence and public intoxication. 'You know, the longer you're out here, the more you're under the sun and baking, the higher the effects can be on you,' Officer Winfield said. 'If you're out here and you're consuming alcoholic beverages, the importance of hydrating throughout the day with water and trying to keep that balance.' Recreational red snapper season begins along Alabama's gulf coast Their message to boaters is simple, follow the rules, have fun and enjoy a safe Memorial Day weekend. Orange Beach police issue stern warning for spring breakers

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WKRG) — Spring break season is here, and students from across the country are heading to Alabama's beaches. The Orange Beach Police Department is reminding all spring breakers and beachgoers that they have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to breaking the law. Mobile City Council to vote on beaver removal contract 'We're not going to tolerate underage drinking. We're not going to tolerate drug use of any kind, zero tolerance,' Orange Beach Police Department Lt. Trent Johnson said. 'If you're caught underage drinking or in your car with drugs, you're going to go to jail.' Police are increasing patrols up to 50% on busy college weekends. That goes for roads, the beach and the water. In addition, a small section of Alabama Point under the Perdido Pass Bridge will remain closed during the spring break season. 'That was the biggest gathering place for our spring breakers who did want to participate in the underage drinking,' Lt. Johnson said. Police said they block off the portion of the beach to prevent any spring break nonsense before it happens. 'Essentially, it moves our troubles into the light. We can see it a little bit better, and if we can see it a little bit better, we can enforce it,' Lt. Johnson said. 'We've also found that by moving it away from that one area, we don't have to enforce it as much. It kind of regulates itself.' Mobile homicide detective stuns crowd with performance of National Anthem Police also emphasized the importance of following all traffic laws when driving through Orange Beach especially during heavy traffic times like spring break season. 'That's one of our biggest issues. When we've got this many people walking down the side of the road and crossing. Just slow down. Take your time, you're in a resort town, you're in paradise. Soak it in and enjoy it. Don't be in a hurry,' Lt. Johnson said. 'Other than that, come down here, have fun but do it respectfully for everybody that's down here.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
