Positive weekend for Sprague
Corban Sprague, 18, is competing in the Toyota TR86 Trophy Series after securing a seat in the CareVets car via a scholarship.
After a successful first round outing in May, he returned to the track late last month for round two in Taupō.
Sprague immediately showed off his skills picking up P1, P3 and P2 in the three practice sessions ahead of qualifying.
After qualifying fifth, he battled away to pick up fourth place in both main races and now also sits fourth in the overall series standings with two rounds to go.
Sprague said it was another positive weekend.
"It wasn't the overall result I had hoped for but I think we showed some great signs heading into the next couple of rounds. There were some great lessons learnt, obviously I want to be winning but it's still great learning.
"Practice went really well, we rolled out off the trailer and the car was really fast.
"In qualifying, we all go out on a new set of tyres and I just didn't maximise that new tyre as well as everyone else which sort of cost me for the races.
"We had really good speed in the races, being one of the fastest, but with the cars being identical, if you don't qualify well it makes it really hard to pass. I put myself in that bad place, I've learned from it and I'll make sure I'm not doing it again."
He said it was his first time racing on the big track at the Taupō International Motorsport Park.
"I've driven around the smaller track, but that was my first time on the big track, I really enjoyed it.
"It's quite a big, long track compared to what I'm used to.
"It flowed really well and it's got quite a bit of undulation, so I really enjoyed it in the Toyota 86."
After previously racing in the Mazda Pro 8 New Zealand series, the Toyota car was still taking a little bit to adjust to, he said.
"It's taken a bit more than I would have liked to be honest. It's very different to the Mazda, so I'm having to try and get all my bad habits I learnt in it out and concentrate on the good things in the 86.
"I'm starting to, and more mileage helps me get closer to where I like to be in it.
"There's still a couple of thing I need to improve on, but it's all looking promising."
Sprague will turn his attention to Manfeild next weekend for round three and said it was a track he was very much looking forward to racing on.
"I've driven around there once but I've never raced it. I had a good first impression of the track.
"It's quite an old school track, like Levels raceway, which I'm used to. It's a real flowy, high-commitment track which I'm really looking forward to.
"The goal is always to battle out for wins and podiums, so I've just got to execute in qualifying and the other areas and hopefully we'll be able to do that."
The action at Manfeild will take place on July 5-6 before a return to Taupō for the final round on July 26-27.

Zeltwanger Two Races Away From Glory
Lee Zeltwanger will be hoping for a drama-free weekend as the clock counts down to the final round of the inaugural Toyota 86 Trophy Series at Taupo International Motorsport Park this Saturday and Sunday. Zeltwanger has been the revelation of the four round winter series, not only matching the pace of more senior Bridgestone GR86 Championship runners Harry Townshend and Ajay Giddy, but leading the points battle for series honours overall with just two races this Sunday remaining. He has a 60 point lead over his nearest challenger in the race for the highly desirable prize pool. The winner will secure not only a free lease of a GR86 – supported by CareVets – but also free support from a race and championship winning engineer and mechanic. Second place in the championship will secure a free lease of a car from TGRNZ. Both first and second places will be responsible for other season costs. The third placed driver will secure entry fees and tyres for a season in the 2024-25 Bridgestone GR86 Championship. Sprague will be aiming to sign off his winter season in style with a debut win, having improved with each outing in his CareVets Scholarship car while Matt Day has impressed many with his speed in the TR86 and is in a well-deserved third overall in the Trophy Series points. All of the young guns will need to have their eyes out this weekend for both Townshend and Giddy. Both have taken wins and multiple podium places in the three rounds so far and will be on the pace this coming weekend too. They can't win the Trophy Series prizes – which are exclusively for TR86 rookies – but they can certainly add to their tally of wins and that is what both will be aiming to do. Mitch Vye makes his TR86 debut this weekend at Taupo too, and it will be the first appearance in the winter series for the Right Karts Academy – which ran three cars so strongly in its debut Bridgestone GR86 Championship campaign last season. If Mitch matches the form of the summer series drivers, he could be a dark horse for this final weekend. Nathan Grammer and Toby Elmiger complete the runners and will both be hoping to finish their campaigns for Mackenzie Motorsport and Action Motorsport on a high. 'Mindblowing' win for Toyota-mad Deb
Deb Winter bought a stockpot and a flexi-tub at Mitre 10 Mega Ashburton and won a brand-new $68k double cab ute. The Toyota Hilux SR5 Cruiser Hybrid 4WD was the grand prize in Mitre 10's nationwide Winter Promotion. Yesterday, she collected the keys to her new graphite-coloured ute amid much fanfare at the Ashburton store. 'Just unbelievable,' she said of the win. ''It's really sad that the first thing that you think about is 'oh this is a scam'. Some random rings you and says you've won first prize in and it's a Hilux ute. ''But (it's) just amazing.'' She now has big plans for the new addition and planned to swap out her trusty Toyota Rav for the newer model and head off-road. ''When the universe gives you something that cool, you've got to have fun with it,'' she said. ''I drive a Toyota Rav. I'm a Toyota girl for the last 20 years. Toyota's are just so reliable. 'This is my new baby. I love to go for picnics, love to head to the beach or up into the hills or to the lakes, so this is absolutely ideal. 'I'm going to put my kayak on it, my dog on it and my bike on it and it's just perfect.'' Winter who lives in Ashburton, said she had entered the competition to surprise her youngest son in Australia. Winter, encouraged to enter the draw by the checkout operator, said she thought it would be a great surprise for her Hilux-mad son, Alex, in Australia. But never expected to win. Her name was randomly drawn from more than 200,000 entries nationwide. ''As I was walking out, I thought how cool would (Alex) think it would be if mum had one of those parked up the driveway next time he comes home.'' It got the reaction she thought. She said Alex, age 20, was ''absolutely stoked. He tried to find ways to get it shipped over to Australia''. Winter got to choose her preferred colour with the help of family. Winter's daughter Liv said the timing of the win had been 'truly remarkable'. Her mum had suffered a stroke last month, and scans had discovered a cancerous mass in her brain. The call from Mitre 10 was the very same day her mum had met with her oncologist, she said. ''The timing of that call was truly remarkable – it brought light and hope to a very difficult moment in her life. ' 'Winning the Hilux has not only lifted her spirits but has given her something to look forward to. It's become a symbol of strength and healing for her, and it's helping us transport her more comfortably to her regular medical appointments. ''She's even planning future adventures with her truck, and it's been wonderful to see her eyes light up again.'' In store for the celebration, staff member Carollyn Allison, also of Ally's Kitchen, created a ute shaped cake inspired by the win, as well as Mitre 10 Mega cupcakes for the staff. Managing director Simon Lye said the team at Mitre 10 Mega Ashburton were thrilled to see the prize picked up by someone in their community. 'As Ashburton is not a big city, we are feeling very proud to see one of our locals win a national promotion and such a great prize,'' he said. ''Our team were really pushing to get as many of our customers as possible entered in the competition. ''We even managed to get a Hilux in store for a few days to show off the prize.'' Start date for upgrades to stadium set

PHOTO: SUPPLIED The ball is rolling as preparatory work has begun on the $24.2million Aorangi Stadium redevelopment project. The redevelopment of the facility in Morgans Rd is aiming to deliver a strengthened existing stadium, a new stadium and a link building with a gym and function room. Civil works and utility diversions were now under way, with the upgrade to the existing stadium expected to begin in October. Work on the new part of the stadium would begin January, 2026 while the entire project was predicted to be completed by mid-2027. In a statement, deputy mayor Scott Shannon welcomed the start of works. Having worked through the development phases, it was exciting that the project was moving on site, he said. "This is a major investment in our community and will bring modern and high-quality facilities for our local sports codes, as well as proving the capacity to hold regional and national scale tournaments. "We're also pleased that the design chosen enables us to continue to have a venue for large scale events and conventions, while still enabling sport to take place. "Once complete, Aorangi Stadium will be a cornerstone of sport and recreation in our district for generations to come." The development was being designed and built by Timaru-based company Thompson Construction and Engineering. Thompson's contracts manager Emily Hill-Pitt said that the company was looking forward to starting the construction phase of such a major community project. "We are honoured to be working with the Timaru District Council and ultimately for our community on this project. "As members of the community ourselves, our team and local subcontractors take great pride in contributing to a facility they'll also enjoy and benefit from." — APL
