The opening of Tse Kee Beef Noodle Soup at Lucky Plaza's Lucky Food Centre brings a new spot to fill up before your Orchard outing.
Located next to a Valu$ store, Lucky Food Centre is home to less than 10 stalls. But don't look down on this small arsenal — this air-conditioned food court has been open since the 1990s! With Tse Kee Beef Noodle Soup joining the food centre, soupy beef noodles and filling rice bowls are now available for all shoppers.
Their signature fare includes the Beef Oxtail Soup (S$10.80 for Small, S$13.50 for Large) and the Beef Tendon Soup (S$8.80 for Small, S$10.50 for Large). The stock, enriched by oxtail bones and different cuts of meat, is seasoned with soy sauce for a deep, umami-rich flavour.
Tse Kee Beef Noodle Soup also offers the simplicity of Beef Ball Minced Noodles (S$5). Piping hot bone broth is poured over your choice of noodles before beef balls, minced beef and chives top the bowl. This bowl of comforting warmth will seep into your tired muscles after a day of exploring Orchard Road.
The Beef Slice Rice Bowl (S$7.50) is served with a half-boiled egg, vegetables and beef slices. A Chinese-style twist on the classic Japanese beef rice bowl, or gyudon, if you will. Coated with the liquid egg centre, the beef slices' savouriness is balanced out by the creamy yolk. Paired with the fluffy white rice, this bowl provides mouthfuls of indulgence.
For the same price, you can also get the Minced Beef Rice Bowl (S$7.50) piled with morsels of meat that slip into all the nooks and crannies of the rice. Stir-fried with soy sauce, oyster sauce and spices, the minced beef packs a punch of flavour.
If you're looking for an affordable, no frills meal during your shopping spree at Orchard, why not check out Tse Kee Beef Noodle Soup's newly opened stall?

Farmers issue warning over crisis that could drive up price of beloved tea: 'It damaged the bushes'

That morning matcha latte might soon be getting a lot more expensive, if it hasn't already where you live, as skyrocketing demand has collided with a smaller-than-expected harvest to leave matcha in short supply, Reuters reported. The result has been record-high prices on the wholesale market. Growers blamed the lower yields on scorching-hot temperatures that hit the Kyoto region during the summer of 2024, Japan's second-consecutive hottest year on record. "Last year's summer was so hot that it damaged the bushes, so we couldn't pluck as many tea leaves," Masahiro Yoshida, a sixth-generation farmer, told Reuters. Compounded with issues around tariffs in the U.S., the industry is facing major headwinds, and some matcha-specializing tea shops have had to make difficult decisions about whether to stay in business when supply is short, with some temporarily closing at times. What's happening? Global demand for matcha has taken off in recent years, as influencers and marketers have touted the beverage's health benefits while associating the drink with a trendy, upscale lifestyle. With the global matcha market having reached $3.3 billion in 2023, experts project that it will nearly double to $6.2 billion by 2032, according to SkyQuest Technology Group, a market-intelligence provider. Seemingly, the only thing capable of slowing the world's thirst for matcha has been the supply of matcha itself. Matcha is made from tencha, stemless tea leaves that are processed via a precise, exacting method before being ground into a fine powder. In 2024, Japanese farmers produced 5,336 tons of tencha, nearly three times the annual production of just 10 years prior, according to Reuters. Yet even this dramatic growth in production has been unable to meet the skyrocketing demand. Tealife, a Singapore-based company, saw demand for matcha from its customers go up tenfold in 2024 alone. "I'm basically always out of stock," Yuki Ishii, Tealife's founder, told Reuters. Do you worry about air pollution in your town? All the time Often Only sometimes Never Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Unsurprisingly, high demand combined with a disappointing harvest have led to record prices. Tencha prices at Kyoto auctions have jumped 170% over just one year ago, per Reuters. Why does the price of matcha matter? While some people might consider their morning matcha an essential and irreplaceable part of their day, others may wonder why the price of matcha matters for everyone else. In a sense, matcha is like the canary in the coal mine, showing what can happen when rising global temperatures limit the availability of a widely consumed crop. Were a similar price increase to hit a staple crop such as rice, corn, or soy, the impact could be devastating, leading to widespread hunger along with far-reaching economic and political consequences. Even without a dramatic price shock like the one currently impacting the matcha market, lower crop yields mean higher grocery prices for everyone. What's being done about the price of matcha? To address the surging demand, tea farmers in Japan have begun devoting more land to matcha production, but the plants will take five years to mature to the point where they can produce a usable harvest, according to Reuters. Additionally, countries such as China and Vietnam have been increasing their own matcha production, increasing global supplies. However, the labor-intensive and highly specialized methods involved in matcha production, including growing the plants in shade for at least 20 days prior to harvest, make ramping up production both slow and expensive. Additionally, even as more land is devoted to matcha production, ever-increasing global temperatures will continue to negatively impact yields. All of which suggests that the matcha industry might not be able to grow its way out of this problem. "I suspect we'll see even more dramatic price increases," Mark Falzon, who imports Kyoto-area matcha for his New Jersey-based business, told Reuters. Kendra Scott returns as CEO of namesake company

Kendra Scott is retaking the reins of her Austin-based namesake company on an interim basis amid a major management shakeup. She'll become interim CEO of Kendra Scott Design Inc. in the wake of the departure of three top executives — CEO Tom Nolan, Chief Financial Officer Jason Friesen and Chief People Officer Danielle Stewart, according to a report in Adweek. Scott, who founded the company in 2002, was CEO of the jewelry and lifestyle brand until 2021, when she became its executive chair. She retained a majority stake in the privately held company and then increased her share a year ago when 65 Equity Partners, a Singapore-based private equity firm owned by Temasek Holdings, bought a minority stake in it. Scott did not immediately respond to ABJ's request for comment. According to Adweek, two longtime Kendra Scott executives are joining Scott in her return. Neal Bronzo will serve in the combined role of interim CFO and chief operating officer, and Beth Ley will return as chief people officer. In a statement to Adweek, the company said it's "entering an exciting new chapter of expansion across channels, categories and markets" in the wake of "a record-breaking year of growth" and the investment by 65 Equity Partners. "As part of this transition, CEO Tom Nolan, CFO Jason Friesen, and CPO Danielle Stewart have departed the company," the statement said. "We are grateful for the leadership, expertise, and vision they brought to Kendra Scott." Today, the company's designs are sold at Target, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's and in over 130 Kendra Scott stores. The company, headquartered off North Lamar in Austin, had 2,600-plus employees, according to a 2024 report. Last year, Yellow Rose by Kendra Scott opened its flagship store on South Congress Avenue, where it sells modern jewelry, apparel and home goods that represent the ranch culture of the American Southwest.
