These fun Highveld festivals are warming up the region this winter
There's an emphasis on the arts across both provinces, though you'll also find lots of delicious food on the menu. There's even one that's all about champagne and chocolate…
The event programmes are varied, featuring top local performers, as well as a couple of GRAMMY winners. Whether you're for thought-provoking talks or dancing the night away, you can pick and choose from these four festivals.
One of a series in events at Constitution Hill, Basha Uhuru Creative Week runs next week. The four-day festival will host print exhibitions, poetry readings and film screenings. Then there's an amapiano showcase and a market for creative brands.
A big focus is the industry workshops that span multiple art disciplines. Topics include poetry, hemp and cannabis, and the business of fashion. This is a Highveld festival that creatives in the area won't want to miss. 25-28 June
Johannesburg, Gauteng
The Vrystaat Kunste Fees, or Free State Arts Festival, is an Afrikaans language festival that aims to collaborate with English and Sotho cultures. The University of the Free State is a key partner, hosting the event on its Bloemfontein campus.
This Highveld festival has a multidisciplinary programme that ranges from music to literature. In addition to performances and exhibitions, there's a series of hands-on workshops. These include therapeutic writing and resin pouring. 15 – 19 Jul 2025

One more gathering for the Highveld, the Cullinan Champagne, Chocolate & Gin Festival brings a sparkly touch to this winter. The event brings together South Africa's best MCCs, craft gin and artisanal chocolates.
In addition to the gourmet goods, the festival also hosts a market of arts and crafts stalls. It's a good excuse for taking a short drive outside Tshwane to Cullinan's old-world streets. 30 August 2025

This premier music festival runs across two days outside Tshwane. Music lovers will appreciate that headliners include GRAMMY award-winning artists Doja Cat and Leon Thomas. There are multiple stages across the weekend with a kaleidoscopic variety of artists.
With the festival taking place on a farm, this Highveld festival also offers a camping and glamping experience for visitors. 30-31 August

‘Vusi Nova and I been talking': Anthony Hamilton hints at collaboration
Hamilton said he and Vusi Nova may go into the studio, after the Ndikuthandile singer had previously reached out to him. In his umpteenth visit to the country, US singer Anthony Hamilton has hinted at collaborating with South African singer Vusi Nova. 'Vusi Nova and I [have] been talking on WhatsApp,' said Hamilton in an interview on Radio 702. The Grammy award-winning singer is in the country to perform at the Women's Day concert, at Wanderers Stadium alongside his fellow countrymen Joe Thomas and Mzansi's Sjava, Zonke and Vusi Nova. Hamilton said he and Vusi Nova may go into the studio during his current visit to South Africa, after the Ndikuthandile singer had previously reached out to him. 'We maybe able to go into studio (sic). He had reached out to me a while ago, but I was on tour, me and Fantasia, so I didn't see it at the proper time,' said Hamilton. In his radio interview, he shared that his first visit to South Africa was in 2009. 'It felt like I belong here, more so than any other place I had visited,' shared the artists who bestowed the South African name, Mzawandile. 'I've sat in Mandela's house, Madiba's house, on his couch. And the love that was in his home, I was able to absorb that in my spirit. It meant that I was in a place where only God could orchestrate for me. That I was supposed to be here…whatever that legacy was, I'm attached to it,' he said. Hamilton has visited South Africa at least seven times. He said coming to South Africa to perform is not only about taking, but also about giving back. 'I love on them, I don't just come and take, I give. My heart is open and it's intentional.' 'It's good to be back, I'm sure we're gonna take it up a notch,' he said. 'What better way to celebrate my 20-year album anniversary, Coming From Where I'm From, than with an up close and personal night in South Africa. Can't wait to see you,' said the singer on his social media at the time. The album was nominated for three Grammys, the Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song (both for the title track) and Best Contemporary R&B Album. Although walking away from the awards ceremony empty-handed, the album is a critically acclaimed body of work. The biggest ditty on the album, Charlene, peaked at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at No. 5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, becoming Hamilton's most successful single to date. Nicki Minaj shows love to Mzansi - will she tour SA again?
US rapper Nicki Minaj has joined the scores of American artists who love South Africa's amapiano music genre. The Grammy-nominated star is particularly fond of Master KG's Ngishuteni, which she featured in a recent TikTok video. In the TikTok, Nicki Minaj added a South African soundtrack to a clip of her getting her nails done. The song was Amapiano hit, Ngishuteni. The Master KG collab features Eemoh and Goon Flavour, and has become an instant hit, particularly made famous by a TikTok dance challenge. In the comments section, the Limpopo-born music artist thanked the US rapper for her acknowledgement, posting: 'Wanitwa Mos', the name of his record label. Others claimed it was a major hint that Nicki Minaj could be coming to South Africa soon. A few weeks ago, French footballer Paul Pogba also used the soundtrack in a social media post. Meanwhile, South African fans of Nicki Minaj are eagerly awaiting news on whether she will bring her Pink Friday 2 World Tour to local shores.
