The moment I knew: as the curtains fell on our first performance, the electricity between us was palpable

The Guardian19-07-2025
In 2015 I was making my European debut singing the role of Tatiana in Tchiakovsky's Eugene Onegin in Berlin. I'd been offered the contract at relatively short notice and was assured by the casting director not to worry, my French-Canadian co-star was 'a real charmer'. I took it with a grain of salt.
On the first day of rehearsals, Étienne (the charmer) arrived for a brief introduction before he rushed off to debut a very big role, playing Posa in Verdi's Don Carlos.
The following day when I asked how the show had gone he turned to me and declared, without a trace of irony, 'I sang like a god'. He was so earnest as he went on to tell me about the audience's rapturous response to his brilliance I didn't know what to say. This level of self-congratulation ran so contrary to my Australian sensibilities all I could do was try not to laugh.
I wrote to a friend that night about Étienne's amusing amour-propre, which even from those first impressions I found curiously endearing, if slightly unhinged. I was intrigued by his whole vibe.
On a rare day off from rehearsals he agreed to show me around town. It was a glorious spring day and as we ambled through the city our conversation never found an organic conclusion. We walked and chatted for about seven hours; it was very Before Sunrise. By the end of the day something had shifted between us.
Étienne had this whole approach to seduction that seemed almost absurdly dramatic to me. More than once he tried to serenade me with a melodeon – which, if you've ever experienced such a thing, you'll know is quite hard to take seriously. Much to his confusion it was the time we spent sitting on the floor of his barely furnished apartment, laughing and watching Flight of the Conchords together, that stole my heart.
We kept things as private as possible but as we continued rehearsals our connection deepened both on and off the stage. There was such a charge between us it sometimes felt as though we were playing out the storyline of the opera in real life, and vice versa.
As the curtains fell on our first performance, standing hand in hand, the electricity was palpable. It was obvious to me that this went well beyond onstage chemistry or a summer crush. I knew then something serious was happening. I had fallen in love.
As the show wrapped we were forced apart for three months. Étienne headed to a contract at Glyndebourne, while I spent a miserable winter in Australia. We spent so much time on the phone it was ridiculous.
In September I flew to meet him in Marseille. He was deep in rehearsals but defied his director and ignored countless phone calls demanding he return to set while he picked me up from the airport. A few weeks later he absconded from rehearsals in Strasbourg to fly to London for 14 hours to watch me make my house debut as Micaëla in Carmen at the Royal Opera House. And by Christmas he surprised me by cancelling three contracts for the new year and booking tickets to join me in Australia for a month.
In the early days, many of Étienne's romantic gestures were met with my baffled amusement but the way he prioritised me, and our budding relationship once we were reunited was not something I took lightly. He swept me off my feet once and for all.
Six years ago we bought our first home in Paris where we are based with our eight-year-old son and our apricot miniature poodle, Lily. We continue to tour extensively and still spend hours on the phone. These days Étienne knows his occasional melodeon performances give me a giggle. And we both know it's the laughs we share that keep our hearts singing.

Star Wars movie reclassified due to this classic scene

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace has been reclassified by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) from a universal (U) rating to parental guidance (PG). The change was made due to "moderate violence" in a lightsaber fight, starship dogfights, and laser weapons, including a scene with brief "bloody detail". The reclassification was revealed in the BBFC's 2024 annual report and applied to the film 's cinema re-release last year. Other films also saw rating changes, with A Star Is Born moving from U to 12 due to implied suicide, and US TV comedy series Fraser from PG to 12 for language and drug references. These updates coincide with the BBFC classifying the highest number of films in its 112-year history in 2023, following new guidelines on sex scenes, violence, and drug misuse.

Heidi Klum talks judgment over 17-year age gap with husband Tom Kaulitz... and giving each other matching tattoos

Heidi Klum wasn't planning to meet the love of her life the night she met Tom Kaulitz. In fact, she almost didn't go out. 'I really wanted to stay home,' the supermodel, 52, recalled in a new interview with People. 'But then I gave myself a little kick in the butt.' That spontaneous decision to attend a friend's party turned into what Klum now calls 'the sliding door moment' of her life. Seven years later, the supermodel and the Tokio Hotel guitarist, who got engaged in December 2018 and married just two months later, are still going strong. Kaulitz, 35, offered Klum, a mother of four, a 'clean slate' after two previous marriages — first to celebrity hairstylist Ric Pipino in 1997 and then to British singer-songwriter Seal, with whom she was married for seven years. But with new love came old habits. 'At first I wanted to [project] what I had learned from different men I had been with… like 'Ooh, this reminds me of something that happened, is that a flag?'' she admitted. Ultimately, it was Kaulitz who challenged her to let go of her baggage. The Project Runway revealed, early in their relationship, Kaulitz said: 'Don't do this to me, because I'm not this person, I'm not that person. Scratch everything. I have to have a fair chance.' Doing this allowed their love to blossom as evidenced by their loved-up red carpet appearances and PDA-filled social media posts. The couple also enjoy a number of shared activities, including shopping for lingerie. 'He loves sitting there, and I go into the changing room and I come out with a different outfit on,' Klum shares. 'He loves me in a miniskirt. He loves me in pumps. He just loves when I get all dolled up.' The two even got matching name tattoos, though Klum jokes: 'His looks much better — so I'm the better tattoo artist.' Despite enjoying life as a wife, Klum says marriage hasn't changed her. 'This is pretty much what you get. I'm pretty loud and you know I'm there.' What keeps the relationship fresh?' she noted. She went on to credit 'stolen weekends,' 'handwritten notes,' and making time for each other for keeping them acting like newlyweds — plus 'a few things she can't share.' Although their 17-year age gap still draws attention, Klum insists she doesn't entertain the criticism. 'When our door closes at home, I don't really care so much what happens around us,' she says. 'I've learned things from my husband that I didn't know I was capable of doing,' she added. At 52, Heidi Klum continues to own her space by maintaining an unapologetically sexy and confident presence both online and offline. 'I've been photographing nude or in lingerie since 1992, way before Instagram,' she says. 'So for me, it's nothing new. For the past 15 years, other people are now doing what I've been doing for 30 years. Instead of being in my little bottoms in a magazine, I'm on Instagram. It's the same thing.' And she has no plans to tone things down. 'For me to be older, it doesn't matter. I don't have this age-shaming or body-shaming thing. I feel like everyone should do what they want to do. I like to run around sexy — even now at 52.' That's been especially evident this summer, as Klum has been island-hopping in bikinis alongside Kaulitz. She's also vocal about challenging outdated ideas about aging. 'The biggest misconception [about] being in your 50s is that you are off the shelf. You're not off the shelf,' she said. 'We are very much on that shelf for everyone to see. Don't hide in your 50s. Beauty is ever-changing, and I'm here for the change. If it's always the same, life is boring.' Having risen to fame in the 1990s, when heroin chic was popular, Klum appreciates the evolving standards of today. 'Now it's okay to be older — but it didn't use to be like that,' she said. 'I feel like we're more welcoming of wrinkles and rolls on our body. Being accepted at every age is amazing. That we've changed and come all that way.' Still, she embraces modern cosmetic options, too. 'I'm all for Botox,' she declared, noting she's intrigued by celebrities opening up about their procedures. 'Whoever wants to talk about [plastic surgery] and wants to share, give me all the numbers.' Looking ahead, Klum welcomes the journey of aging — gray hair, laugh lines, and all. 'Don't we all want to get old? I know we always say that, but it's the truth. I'm already looking at 60 and 70, hopefully 80 and 90. And if we're still kicking it then, let's celebrate,' she concluded.

Drake fans disappointed over cancelled Manchester gig

Disappointed fans have spoken to the BBC following Canadian rapper Drake's cancellation of his concert in Manchester on Monday due to "travel logistics".Monday's concert was called off due to "unforeseen ferry and travel logistics" and has been rescheduled for next week, according to a statement issued by the Co-op Live arena."The good news is that Drake will now perform in Manchester on Tuesday, August 5th, and it's set to be an unforgettable night," the statement Drake had already performed at the Manchester venue on Friday and Saturday - suggesting he was in the local area - leaving fans unimpressed by the short-notice cancellation of Monday's event. 'Leaving with disappointment' Nina, 24, bought tickets for Monday night's show in June, from her home in Orlando, Florida, and decided to plan a European road trip around the concert date, culminating in seeing her "favourite artist" in Manchester on 28 July. "I made a big sacrifice just to make this concert, but I knew it would be the highlight of my trip," she said. "Yesterday morning I received an email from Ticketmaster notifying me that the tour has been postponed, which was shocking, as I had just arrived at the airport in Amsterdam to head to Manchester."Having been on holiday in Europe since mid-July, Nina is due to fly back to the US on Tuesday, and won't be able to attend the new paid nearly £340 for her General Admission floor ticket at Co-op Live and is awaiting a refund. "I came to Manchester simply for the performance, and I'm now leaving with disappointment. "I'm truly upset, but trying to enjoy the last day of my holiday here in Europe."There are many other loyal fans, like myself, who travelled thousands of miles for this performance - who worked extremely hard to be able to afford this trip, only to be left without any public apology from Drake or his team".And this isn't the first time Nina has missed out on seeing the Canadian star. Two years ago, she travelled to Nashville, Tennessee from Orlando - only for the concert once again to be cancelled the day before. 'I spent £500 on a new fit' Carlos, 18, made the journey from Brentford, in London, on Saturday, in order to see the rapper for the first time at the concert on Monday night. "I woke up to the email that it had been cancelled on Sunday morning," said Carlos."This was meant to be the first time seeing him, and it would probably be the last - because he doesn't come to the UK a lot [and] if he does, he'll be old and it won't be the same."I spent about £500 on a new [out]fit just for the night. But it's not the clothes, I paid to see Drake."All tickets remain valid for the rescheduled date, but Co-op Live have offered fans chance to apply for a refund if they cannot make the concert on 5 August. "I'm busy that day," said Carlos, adding he has sold back his £175 says he feels fortunate because his sister lives in Manchester, so he didn't have to spend money on a hotel ahead of the concert, but feels sorry for those who've travelled a long way and spent additional money to get to the venue. "Some have actually travelled continents to see this guy!" One of the most-streamed artists in the world, Drake released his new single 'Which One' with UK rapper Central Cee last Thursday during an episode of his Iceman stream, which was filmed around the city, including at Manchester Piccadilly railway station and Victoria has been performing across the UK this summer as part of his first tour in Europe in six years.
