Chris Sale fans 11 as Braves best Brewers, end 7-game skid

Reutersa day ago

June 10 - Chris Sale allowed one run over seven-plus dominant innings and the visiting Atlanta Braves hit three homers to snap a seven-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday.
Matt Olson and Eli White each hit a two-run homer and Ronald Acuna Jr. belted a solo homer for the Braves, who had lost 14 of their previous 17 games.
Sale (4-4) allowed five hits, struck out a season-high 11 and walked two in a 103-pitch outing. It was the 91st time in his career that he struck out at least 10.
Raisel Iglesias completed a scoreless eighth, and Dylan Lee finished with a perfect ninth.
Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies singled in the sixth and eighth innings, giving him 1,000 career hits and extending his career-high on-base streak to 24 games.
Austin Riley had three hits for the Braves, and Marcell Ozuna added two hits.
Milwaukee starter Aaron Civale (1-2) yielded two runs on five hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five.
Atlanta erased a 1-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth. Acuna tied it with his fifth homer, a one-out solo shot to right-center. Riley doubled with two outs, chasing Civale. DL Hall relieved, and Olson sent his first pitch 417 feet to center for his 14th homer.
White made it 5-1 in the eighth with his third homer. Atlanta's Ozuna added a two-run single in the ninth.
Milwaukee has lost three of its last four games, scoring just one run total in the three defeats.
The Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the third when Joey Ortiz opened with a double into the right field corner, advanced to third on a flyout and scored on William Contreras' single to center.
The Braves had runners in scoring position in both the second and fourth innings, but Civale worked out of each jam.

Abbott authors shutout as Reds improve to 5-0 vs. Guardians

June 11 - Andrew Abbott threw a three-hitter for Cincinnati's first complete-game shutout in four years and Spencer Steer drove in the only run to give the visiting Reds a 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night. Steer's single in the fifth inning off Slade Cecconi (1-3) scored Will Benson and helped Cincinnati earn its fifth consecutive win. The Reds have won six of their last seven and stand two games above .500 for the first time since May 3. Abbott (6-1) had five strikeouts and one walk as he threw 77 of his 110 pitches for strikes. The left-hander gave up hits in the second, fifth and ninth innings, but only let two Guardians get as far as second base. Cleveland, which is 0-5 against its in-state rival this season, put the potential tying run on twice in the ninth. Steven Kwan led off with a walk, but he was erased by David Fry's double-play grounder. Jose Ramirez then singled before Abbott got Carlos Santana to fly out to left to complete his masterpiece. Ramirez's hit extended his career-long on-base streak to 36 games. The six-time All-Star owns hits in 31 of 32 games since his surge began on May 6. Cecconi posted a career-high-tying eight strikeouts in five innings. The right-hander gave up one run on four hits and walked one to fall to 0-3 lifetime against the Reds. Reds center fielder TJ Friedl robbed Fry of an extra-base hit in the fourth, making a running grab just below the top of the wall. He crashed into the padding and spent some time prone on the ground before shaking off his discomfort. One inning later, Guardians first baseman Carlos Santana made back-to-back defensive gems with two on. He caught Matt McLain's foul down the line after being hit from behind by second baseman Angel Martinez, then dove to snare Friedl's bunt attempt. The Reds promoted left-hander Joe La Sorsa from Triple-A Louisville before the game. He filled the roster spot of pitcher Brent Suter, who was placed on the bereavement list. --Field Level Media

Tigers' bullpen steps up in win over Orioles

June 11 - Spencer Torkelson's two-run home run and Sawyer Gipson-Long's 4 2/3 solid innings of relief pitching carried the Detroit Tigers to a 5-3 victory over the host Baltimore Orioles to open a three-game series Tuesday night. Riley Greene, Gleyber Torres, Zach McKinstry and Wenceel Perez all had two hits for the Tigers, who have the best record in the major leagues. Chase Lee (3-0) retired the only batter he faced and was awarded the victory. Then Gipson-Long held the Orioles to one run on three hits while striking out five without a walk. Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest did the rest from the mound, with Vest notching his 11th save despite allowing a run. Baltimore third baseman Jordan Westburg, in his first game off an extended stint on the injury list, homed to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holliday each had two of the six hits for the Orioles, who've lost three of their last four games. Brant Hurter was on the mound at the start for the Tigers in what was expected to be a short stint. He gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings. Orioles starter Cade Povich (1-5) gave up five runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings The Tigers opened the scoring on Perez's sacrifice fly in the second inning. The Orioles countered on Gunnar Henderson's two-out single in the third inning. Javier Baez's single with two outs in the fourth regained the lead for Detroit. Dillon Dingler's two-out, fifth-inning RBI single came one batter before Torkelson homered on a smash to straight-away center field to stretch the margin to 5-1. It was his 16th long ball of the season. That marked the end of Povich's outing. The Orioles haven't won a game he started since late April. Holliday's double, a wild pitch and Adley Rutschman's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning produced the Orioles' second run. Baltimore's offense was largely stagnant. Other than the six hits, they had two batters reach base via hit batsmen and drew one walk. --Field Level Media
