Samsung eyes Pepsi's Mauro Porcini as first foreign design chief

Korea Herald27-03-2025
Samsung Electronics is in discussions with Mauro Porcini, a globally renowned industrial designer, to appoint him as the chief design officer of its mobile business division, industry sources said Thursday.
If finalized, Porcini would become the first foreign CDO in the tech giant's history since its founding in 1969.
Porcini is known for spearheading design-led innovation at global companies such as 3M and PepsiCo. In 2012, he was the only designer named to Fortune's 40 Under 40 list, and he was also awarded Italy's national merit honor for elevating the country's design reputation on the global stage.
Samsung has a history of recruiting world-class experts across various domains to drive innovation.
In 2019, Samsung hired Steve McManus, a former senior designer at Apple, to lead the design strategy team in its mobile division. McManus had played a key role in hardware design for the iPhone and iPad, later guiding smartphone design strategies at Samsung.
In artificial intelligence and machine learning, Samsung brought in David Eun, a former executive at Google and AOL, in 2011 to launch Samsung Next, where he helped shape the company's open innovation and venture investment strategies.
In 2016, Sebastian Seung, a neuroscience expert and professor at Princeton University, joined Samsung and was later promoted to president. He has since led Samsung's AI research, focusing on neuroscience-driven AI development.
In 2013, the company appointed Gregory Lee, a former executive at Johnson & Johnson, as Executive Vice President for North America. He later became head of Samsung's mobile division in the US, playing a key role in expanding the company's presence and brand recognition in the region.
In 2015, Samsung appointed Lee Don-tae, former co-CEO of the British design firm Tangerine, as head of its global design center, further strengthening its global design capabilities.

Seoul shares finish lower on profit taking, decline in defense stocks

Seoul shares closed lower Friday as investors offloaded defense and other major stocks on profit-taking amid lingering concerns over US President Donald Trump's import tariffs. The Korean won also fell against the US dollar. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index fell 17.67 points, or 0.55 percent, to close at 3,210.01. Despite the decline, the main index rose 2.9 percent this week. Trade volume was moderate at 334.19 million shares worth 11.2 trillion won ($8.06 billion). Decliners outnumbered gainers 487 to 384. Overnight, US stocks ended mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.51 percent, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite rose 0.35 percent. In Seoul, institutions and foreign investors sold a net 131.9 billion won and 157.2 billion won worth of stocks, respectively, while individual investors bought a net 183 billion won. "In particular, investors dumped some defense stocks on profit-taking amid expectations that the planned US-Russia summit next week may bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war," Hwang Jun-ho, an analyst at Sangsangin Investment & Securities Co., said over the phone. Defense industry stocks led the KOSPI's decline. Hanwha Aerospace Industries plunged 5.47 percent to 881,000 won, Hyundai Rotem fell 4.87 percent to 183,500 won, and LIG Nex1 tumbled 14.9 percent to 513,000 won. Chipmaker SK hynix dropped 2.1 percent to 256,500 won, while leading shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shed 1.79 percent to 466,500 won. LG Chem declined 5.47 percent to 276,500 won, and major steelmaker POSCO Holdings slipped 0.67 percent to 295,500 won. Among gainers, market bellwether Samsung Electronics rose 1.84 percent to 71,800 won, and Hanwha Ocean, the shipbuilding unit of Hanwha Group, climbed 0.6 percent to 117,700 won. Samsung Electronics extended gains for a second straight session on news that the company will manufacture Apple Inc.'s next-generation processor at its foundry in Austin, Texas. KT&G, the country's dominant tobacco company, jumped 6.28 percent to 147,200 won. The local currency was quoted at 1,389.60 won against the greenback at 3:30 p.m., down 8.4 won from the previous session. (Yonhap)

Trump's '100%' chip tariff plan may not hit Samsung, SK hynix under Lutnick's clarification

South Korean chipmakers saw a silver lining as US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has clarified that foreign chipmakers will be exempt from the recently announced 100 percent tariffs on semiconductors if they follow through on commitments to building US manufacturing plants. This suggests Korea's Samsung Electronics and SK hynix will be spared, as both have sizeable plant projects there. Lutnick made the remarks Thursday in a Fox Business interview, after Trump's '100 percent tariffs' on imported chips — along with lack of specifics — had put Korean chipmakers on edge over the potential for hefty levies. 'So what the president said is if you commit to build in America during his term, and if you file it with the Commerce Department and if your auditor oversees your building it all the way through, then he will allow you to import your chips — while you are building — without a tariff,' he said. "But you have to be confirmed and overseen building in America." Lutnick stressed that Trump's objective is to 'get semiconductor manufacturing done here,' where the technologies can be controlled, estimating that the initiative could result in semiconductor-related investments of $1 trillion in the US. The day before, Trump said he will impose 100 percent tariffs on all chips and semiconductors coming into the US, unless companies manufacture in America. But he left a key detail unclear on whether the tariff exemptions would apply exclusively to chips manufactured in US facilities or it would also cover chips produced by the same company in other countries. More details of the semiconductor tariffs are expected soon, after the Commerce Department completes investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act into the impact of those imports on US national security. Under Lutnick's explanation, Samsung and SK hynix appear likely to qualify, according to observers. Samsung runs a foundry in Austin, Texas, and is building a fabrication plant in nearby Taylor, scheduled to open in 2026. Meanwhile SK hynix has committed a $3.87 million investment in building an advanced chip packaging plant, which mass production targeted for 2028. "Because Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are constructing or planning fabs in the US, they will likely be exempt from the tariffs,' said Kim Rok-ho, an analyst at Hana Securities.
