U Mobile launches ULTRA5G at Berjaya Times Square, boosts in-building 5 G coverage
Its chief technology officer, Woon Ooi Yuen, said the company is committed to equipping a total of 170 buildings with ULTRA5G coverage within the next year, and up to 600 buildings in the next four years.
"This launch marks the beginning of U Mobile's 5G next-generation network rollout, going live with deployment targets set to reach 80 per cent coverage of populated areas (CoPA) by the second half of 2026.
"We have already installed the ULTRA5G in more than 70 buildings currently, and the first to go live today is the Berjaya Times Square mall, which is also our headquarters," he said at the launching event today.
Apart from Berjaya Times Square, the telecommunication company's 5G network coverage has also been made available at Penang Bridge 1, connecting the full length of the bridge with only two towers, delivering a seamless connectivity experience for daily commuters.
"Once we achieve 80 per cent CoPA with ULTRA5G within one year, we will shift our focus toward reaching the next target of 90 per cent CoPA, which will include rural areas across the country," Woon added.
He also noted that U Mobile plans to provide regular updates on ULTRA5G availability, with rapid network deployment aimed at covering strategic locations such as airports, hospitals, convention centres, and other high-impact indoor and outdoor areas nationwide.
"This is in line with the company's commitment to delivering the widest and deepest 5G network in Malaysia. With deployment progressing ahead of schedule, U Mobile is also doubling down on indoor coverage to ensure a seamless and consistent 5G experience across the country,' he said. - Bernama

Turkey aims to hold 5G frequency tender in October, minister says
FILE PHOTO: Turkey's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu addresses the audience during a signing ceremony in Istanbul, Turkey, April 29, 2024. REUTERS/Umit Bektas/File Photo ISTANBUL (Reuters) -Turkey plans to launch a long-awaited 5G frequency tender in October with initial service expected to be available in 2026, its transport and infrastructure minister said on Tuesday. Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Turkey had consulted with its three major telecom operators and studied global 5G models, particularly in Europe. All three operators - government-controlled Turkcell and Turk Telekom along with Vodafone's Turkish unit - are expected to take part in the tender. "We aim to publish the tender specifications this month and hold the tender in October," he said in a ministry statement. "Our goal is to expand 5G across the entire country within a few years after the initial signal is received in 2026." Uraloglu had previously said he hoped to hold the tender in August. According to a presidential decree published on Turkey's official gazette on Saturday, the tender will include 11 frequency packages across the 700 MHz and 3.5 GHz bands, with individual package values ranging from $50 million to $425 million. The decree set the minimum price for the available frequency packages at $2.13 billion. The tender will also see the government roll over existing mobile network licenses, which are currently set to expire in 2029. Operators will be required to pay 5% of their yearly revenues to roll over the licenses. (Reporting by Tuvan Gumrukcu and Can Sezer; Editing by Joe Bavier)

Improved quarter two earnings for CelcomDigi, supported by lower staff costs and device sales
CELCOMDIGI's results were a slight miss, with core earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) up 9.2% in the first half of 2025 (1H25). With IT transformation cost and depreciation set to rise in 2H25, EBIT growth should normalise to guided levels. Service revenue was flattish in 1H25 with weaker prepaid revenue partly buffered by stronger home fibre and postpaid revenues. Quarter two 2025 (2Q25) EBIT improved 6% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), mainly on lower staff cost with MYR41 mil in 1Q25 redundancy cost booked and device sales. Prepaid revenue dipped by a marginal 0.6% QoQ on seasonality (lower reloads and gaming spend). A clean-up of the prepaid registry also crimped prepaid subs after two quarters of marginal growth. Home broadband revenue and subs hit quarterly highs, up by double digits YoY or QoQ, thanks to the strong take-up of the converged (CD One) plans where a third of fibre gross additions originate. CDB said 5G wholesale costs have been steady. While network integration has reached 84% (end June), the pace appears to have slowed over the quarter which we believe could be due to protracted discussions on remaining sites. Management said the industry has made some progress on the discussions with the Government on the expanded Sales & Service Tax (SST) levied on tower rental/leases, with a worst-case impact of MYR100 mil on an annualised basis. Management has reaffirmed its guidance of low- single-digit service revenue growth, EBIT growth of low-to-mid-single digit and capital expenditure intensity of 14-16% for financial year 2025. This implies slower EBIT growth in 2H25 on higher depreciation (new network assets) and integration costs, with IT transformation investments to peak in 4Q25. —Aug 19, 2025 Main image: amanz

U Mobile aims to provide 5G coverage in 175 buildings within a year
KUALA LUMPUR: U Mobile Sdn Bhd will roll out in-building 5G coverage to 175 buildings within a year and over 600 nationwide within four years, said chief technology officer Woon Ooi Yuen. He said the telco has already equipped more than 70 buildings with its 5G infrastructure with Berjaya Times Square becoming the first shopping mall to be fully enabled. 'Over a period of one year, we are looking at more than 170 buildings, and over four years, more than 600 buildings for our 5G,' he told reporters at the launch of U Mobile's 5G next-gen network, Ultra5G, at Berjaya Times Square today. The telco believes the name ULTRA5G aptly emphasises U Mobile's commitment to ultra-fast speeds, ultra-reliable connectivity, and ultra-wide coverage. Apart from Berjaya Times Square, Woon said, the telco's 5G network coverage has also been made available at the First Penang Bridge. 'The rollout will include a mix of hospitals, shopping malls, transportation hubs and airports. We have started work and almost completed in KK, Langkawi, and KLIA airports.' Woon said U Mobile is targeting 80% coverage of populated areas (CoPA) nationwide by the second half of next year. 'Once we complete one year on 80% CoPA, we'll move to 90% CoPA target In two years including Sabah and Sarawak.' At present, he said, over 30% of U Mobile's subscribers are already using 5G services and with the rollout of Ultra5G, the company expects more than half of its total subscribers will be on 5G as coverage expands. U Mobile launched ULTRA5G at Berjaya Times Square, the telco's headquarters, today. U Mobile users at the shopping complex will now see an ULTRA5G identifier on their devices, thanks to the telco's in-building coverage, which marks a key step forward in U Mobile's strategy to deliver deep and consistent 5G coverage across both indoor and outdoor environments. The ULTRA5G experience, powered by intelligent, enterprise-grade network technology, can meet the evolving needs of Malaysia's digital future. To highlight the network capability of the ULTRA5G experience, U Mobile conducted several demonstrations, including Malaysia's first 4K livestream of the 800-metre-long roller-coaster ride at Berjaya Times Square Theme Park, Asia Pacific's longest multi-inverted indoor ride that runs for about two and a half minutes per session. Beyond the livestream, to illustrate the network capability of the ULTRA5G experience, the telco also conducted an immersive mixed-reality experience and a 5G network slicing demonstration, showcasing service differentiation and ultra-reliable performance. Woon said as the nation's newest 5G network provider, U Mobile is focused on enabling digital transformation for consumers and businesses alike. 'ULTRA5G brings enhanced digital experiences, from ultra-reliable streaming and immersive gaming to high-quality video calls in crowded areas.' For enterprises, Woon said, ULTRA5G opens doors to advanced use cases like XR, robotics, smart cities and IR 4.0 automation. 'With deployment ahead of schedule, U Mobile is also doubling down on indoor coverage to ensure the widest and deepest 5G experience in Malaysia,' he added.
