Tamil Nadu CM distributes enhanced Haj subsidy of Rs 25,000
CHENNAI: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday launched the distribution of enhanced Haj subsidies for first-time pilgrims at the secretariat. To mark the launch of the distribution, he handed over cheques of Rs 25,000 each to 10 beneficiaries. The subsidy, with a total allocation of Rs 14.12 crore, will be extended to 5,650 eligible first-time Haj pilgrims across the state through the Tamil Nadu State Hajj Committee.
In what is being called a first-of-its-kind initiative, the state government has raised the subsidy amount for first-time Haj pilgrims to Rs 25,000 each for the year 2024-25, following the CM's recommendation. This enhancement, aimed at easing the financial burden on pilgrims, was officially announced earlier this year.
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Minority Welfare and Non-Resident Tamils Welfare S M Nasar, Chief Secretary N Muruganandam and Tamil Nadu Haj Committee chairman and MLA P Abdul Samad were present at the event.

Ukraine Blows Up Russia's Rs 700 Cr Warbird; Zelensky Sends Su-35 To Hell
New Delhi: Ukraine has claimed that it shot down one of Russia's most advanced and expensive fighter jets. The Ukrainian Air Force said the Russian Su-35 was destroyed near Kursk, a region inside Russian territory. The cost of this jet is said to be around Rs 700 crore (about $90 million). Moscow has not confirmed the loss. According to Ukraine, the Su-35 was taken down near the Russian border region of Kursk. The area has become a flashpoint in recent months, with Ukraine stepping up cross-border aerial strikes and drone incursions. The Ukrainian Air Force called it a successful operation. The jet was reportedly hit during a mission early Saturday morning. A statement posted on Telegram said the strike happened in the 'Kursk direction'. A video released by Ukraine shows a jet in flames, believed to be the Su-35. It is not clear if it was recorded by a drone or another fighter jet. Independent sources have not verified the video yet. The Su-35 is one of the top combat aircraft of Russia. It is 4th-generation multi-role fighter and is designed for air dominance and long-range strikes. Developed by Russia's Sukhoi, it is an upgraded version of the Su-27. The jet is known for its advanced weapons systems, agility and speed. Valued at around $90 million (Rs 700 crore), it is one the costliest aerial assets of Russia. This is considered to be one of the deadliest aerial strike by Ukraine in weeks. And if the claim turns out to be true, the loss of Su-35 would mark a major tactical success. Why does it matter? The reported downing comes amid Ukraine's growing strategy of striking targets inside Russian territory, a tactic meant to rattle Moscow's sense of security. The airstrike came just days after Ukraine carried out drone attacks on several Russian airbases under its 'Spiderweb' operation. In those strikes, strategic bombers like Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 were damaged. Ukraine has launched over 117 drones inside Russia so far. At least 40 Russian aircraft have reportedly been hit the operations. These attacks aim to limit Russia's ability to launch missile strikes on Ukrainian cities and degrade its air superiority. Ukraine's General Staff also made another bold claim. Since the full-scale war began in February 2022, it says Ukrainian forces have shot down 414 Russian planes. Military experts believe these tactics are shifting the dynamics of the war, especially in contested airspace. So far, Russia has not responded officially to the Su-35 incident. Confirmation of the shootdown remains unclear. However, if Ukraine's claim is accurate, it marks a major success in its defensive campaign and a serious setback for Moscow's air dominance.

Tamil Nadu sees Blue Economy as a powerful tool to bring sustainable prosperity to coastal districts
Of late, there has been a growing buzz around the blue economy in Tamil Nadu power corridors. The phrase implies economic activities associated with the ocean, seas and coastal regions, which includes shipbuilding, processing and exporting of seafood, and coastal tourism. Tamil Nadu boasts of having the second longest coastline in India (after Gujarat). But the resource hasn't been tapped to a satisfactory extent. And that is something the TN govt is out to fix. "As TN charts its course towards our CM's (M K Stalin) ambition of a $1 trillion economy, the Blue Economy presents some of the most exciting opportunities. Despite having the second longest coastline in India, we believe our coast is still underutilized from an economic standpoint. This is something we are now addressing with urgency through a vision laid out by our CM," said T R B Rajaa, TN Minister for Industries. "We see the Blue Economy as a powerful tool to bring sustainable prosperity to our coastal districts, through investments that create large job opportunities for both skilled and semi-skilled talents," he added. The state's approach is strategic and focused on three key areas – shipbuilding, seafood processing and coastal tourism. Each of these has the potential to dramatically transform livelihoods and local economies. "The key strategy is maximizing the potential of TN's long coastline. Besides the focus areas, we could tap the state's port facilities spread across its coast. Shipbuilding is an area that has drawn the attention of the Centre as well. The Centre has ambitious plans to be part of the top five shipbuilding nations by 2047. In February, during the Union Budget 2025, a key maritime sector announcement was regarding the establishment of the ₹25,000 crore Maritime Development Fund (MDF) to support long-term investments in the sector. The other big ticket takeaway was the introduction of the revamped Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy (SBFAP 2.0) to encourage more participation in shipbuilding activities. With an improved outlay of ₹18,090 crore, this policy is aimed at strengthening domestic shipyards and enhancing their global competitiveness. Tamil Nadu is also working on a Marine Transport policy which could be out in a month, and this could generate a lot of economic opportunities," said Darez Ahamed, MD & CEO, Guidance Tamil Nadu. To understand the potential offered by shipbuilding - consider that just one anchor investor can unlock an entire value chain of MSMEs in welding, precision engineering, logistics and marine services. The state has already initiated talks with global players to set up shipbuilding facilities in TN. As per sources, the order books of these international operators are packed till 2032. On its part, the state must provide the infrastructure needed to help them to establish their units here. For every job created inside the shopfloor of a shipbuilding company, seven jobs will be created outside. That's the potential it offers, say stakeholders. In the seafood sector, TN is no longer content with being just a supplier of raw catch. The game plan now is to build end-to-end infrastructure for seafood processing, cold chains and export-quality packaging, ensuring that value addition happens right here in the state's fishing hamlets, creating better incomes and sustainable livelihoods for the coastal communities. Infrastructure, especially roads connecting the coastal belt, cold chains along the TN coast, availability of power for these cold chains, mapping the wasteland on the coast, utilizing it adequately for growth of marine food and processing industries, are some of the key areas TN should focus on, said a leading consultant for the marine food industry, on condition of anonymity. "We will be addressing all the issues that have been holding back the growth of the seafood industry in Tamil Nadu, vis-a-vis neighbouring states including Andhra Pradesh, which accounts for Rs 26,000 crore worth seafood exports as against TN's Rs 8,000 crore. We would soon match the best performing states in this sector," a TN govt official said. Coastal tourism is a major plus point. Tamil Nadu's coast is beautiful, diverse and rich in culture, but it remains largely unexplored. The state is developing a blueprint to unlock this through sustainable, community-led tourism, which will entail eco-friendly resorts, avenues for water-based recreational activities and support for local entrepreneurship. The aim is to make the coast a world-class destination; while keeping it rooted in tradition. "To ensure this transformation is inclusive, we plan to skill the youth in coastal regions through initiatives under the Naan Mudhalvan programme. We want our coastal communities to be more than beneficiaries. They must be the driving force behind this change. Tamil Nadu's Blue Economy strategy is also about building a just, green and resilient future for our coastal communities, and we are committed to making it a reality," Rajaa said. So, of the three segments that have got the special focus under the Blue Economy strategy, which one might get a head start? "We would like all three to take off big-time, since the opportunities are significant. But realistically, the first shipbuilding could take off in just about a year from now," says Guidance Tamil Nadu's Ahamed. That's just on the horizon.

‘BJP govt shielding those who uprooted ex-CM Jogi's statue'
Raipur: Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) state president Amit Jogi on Sunday strongly condemned the uprooting of the statue of former chief minister Ajit Jogi in Gaurela and accused the state govt of shielding the culprits. He warned of a major agitation if the statue is not reinstalled at Jyotipur Chowk, Gaurela, by June 25. Amit Jogi said that the act was carried out in collusion with local officials and said the culprits were later seen having tea with the Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district in-charge minister at a guest house, instead of being arrested. Addressing a press conference at his Raipur residence on Sunday, the former MLA Amit Jogi alleged that the statue of Ajit Jogi, which stood on private land owned by the Jogi family, was uprooted using a hydra machine in the intervening night of May 25 and 26, and dumped in garbage. It has been over two weeks, yet the statue hasnt been reinstated, nor have the accused been apprehended. Everyone sees them, except the police, Amit Jogi said, calling the incident a deliberate insult to Ajit Jogi and his legacy. He also mentioned that the statue was legally installed on land privately owned by the Jogi family and not on govt property. The land, he said, was part of a property acquired before 1932 by the late Menzies and later transferred through a valid Power of Attorney to Atul Arthur in 2020. In 2021, a No-Objection Certificate was issued by the landowners for the installation of a garden and Ajit Jogis statue. Funds for the statues platform and garden, amounting to Rs 3.5 lakh, were sanctioned from former MLA Dr Renu Jogis MLA fund, with Gaurela Municipality appointed as the construction agency. Amit Jogi rejected claims that the statue was removed to install one of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee, saying the municipal resolution pertained to Tikar Bypass, not Jyotipur Chowk. We support installing both statues, but they must be placed at their rightful locations, he said. He further accused BJP leaders of engaging in statue politics and urged them to act ethically. "Ajit Jogi belongs to every Chhattisgarhi. Uprooting his statue is not only illegal and insensitive, but it also reflects a narrow, destructive mindset", he said. Jogi announced that if the statue is not reinstated at its original spot by June 25, it would be brought to chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai's residence in Raipur, demanding its formal unveiling. "The CM once promised to visit Gaurela for the unveiling. Since he didn't, we'll bring Jogi Ji to his doorstep," he added. He concluded by forgiving those involved in the act and said copies of a book authored by Ajit Jogi would be sent to them, urging them to read Jogi Ji and understand him. Dr Renu Jogi also condemned the act and appealed for swift justice and reinstallation of the statue.
