Democratic governors embrace border security, reject Trump immigrant 'abuses'
WASHINGTON, - Three prominent Democratic U.S. governors face a grilling on Thursday from a Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives panel over immigration policy, as President Donald Trump steps up a crackdown on people living in the country illegally.
The governors of New York, Illinois and Minnesota are due to testify to the House Oversight Committee following days of protests in downtown Los Angeles over the Trump administration's aggressive ramping up of arrests of migrants.
Tensions escalated as Trump ordered the National Guard and Marines into California to provide additional security.
Trump's immigration crackdown has become a major political flashpoint between the White House and national Democrats. California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, seen as a contender for the party's presidential nomination in 2028, in a Tuesday night video speech accused Trump of choosing "theatrics over public safety."
Minnesota's Tim Walz, who ran unsuccessfully for vice president last year; Illinois' JB Pritzker, also seen a 2028 hopeful, and New York's Kathy Hochul, walked a careful line in their prepared testimony for Thursday's hearing, voicing support for immigration enforcement, if not Trump's tactics.
"If they are undocumented, we want them out of Illinois and out of our country," Pritzker said.
At the same time, Pritzker lashed out against "any violations of the law or abuses of power" and said, "Law-abiding, hardworking, tax-paying people who have been in this country for years should have a path to citizenship."
Reuters/Ipsos polls show Trump getting more support for his handling of immigration than any other policy area.
"Minnesota is not a sanctuary state," Walz proclaimed, adding that state officials cooperate with federal immigration authorities, while noting that it offers "respect" to cities and counties that choose to give no more than the legal minimum support to the Department of Homeland Security.

AAP Delhi unit President Saurabh Bharadwaj said that the party will lead a major demonstration at Jantar Mantar on June 29 at 10 AM, demanding justice for lakhs of slum dwellers. Bharadwaj accused the BJP-led Delhi government of betraying the urban poor. 'The BJP promised 'Jaha Jhuggi, Wahan Makaan' but is instead bulldozing people's homes without providing alternative housing', he said. He also cited the tragic incident in Bawana where a fire in a slum killed two children and pointed out that no minister or MLA visited the site. 'Shockingly just two days later, bulldozers were sent to demolish the entire cluster', he alleged, questioning if the fire was part of a larger conspiracy. Bharadwaj also highlighted the demolition of over 800 homes in the historic Madarasi Camp, where generations of Tamil families have lived for decades, despite holding housing guarantee cards. He challenged the ruling BJP to bring a law in Parliament to protect slums. 'The BJP cannot hide behind court rulings. They are not going to the Supreme Court nor making laws to save the poor,' he said. Calling for unity, he appealed to all the slum dwellers to join the June 29 protest and expose the BJP's 'bulldozer politics' before the nation. It is worthy to note here that the issue of slum demolitions has become a problematic one for the BJP as both the AAP and Congress have been criticising the ruling party for failing to protect the slum dwellers in the national Capital. Bharadwaj's attack came as authorities launched a demolition drive in the Bhoomiheen camp in southeast Delhi's Govindpuri area on June 11 morning, amid heavy police deployment. However, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had said on June 8 that the authorities cannot go against demolition orders issued by the courts and stressed that the displaced residents have been provided accommodation.

Donald Trump Makes G7 Return Amid Escalating Israel-Iran Tensions
US President Donald Trump, whose second term has been devoted to going it alone, makes his return to the Group of Seven in crisis mode after Israel attacked Iran. The G7 summit starting Sunday in the Canadian Rockies town of Kananaskis marks the first major global gathering of Trump's second term, in which he has been even more brash in shattering diplomatic norms. Looking to avoid a dust-up, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had set the agenda on largely uncontroversial themes such as building global supply chains for critical minerals. That agenda could now be upended as Israel launched a massive military campaign against Iran on Friday, saying it was taking pre-emptive action against its adversary's contested nuclear program. The Trump administration has closely aligned the United States with Israel, taking aim even at close allies who criticise its offensive in Gaza. But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu openly defied Trump, who hours earlier had called for a diplomatic solution and whose friend and roving envoy Steve Witkoff had been due to hold new talks with Iran on Sunday just as the G7 opened. A senior Canadian official said there would be no attempt at the G7 to reach consensus on a joint communique on the issues of the day and that leaders instead would be asked to endorse "short, action-oriented statements." "Of course it would be desirable for a summit statement to be issued, but as the summit is being held in a very complex international situation, I believe that the unity of the G7 should be given the highest priority," Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya said. New Leader In '51st State' The last time Trump attended a G7 summit in Canada in 2018, he stormed out early and took to social media to disassociate the United States from the statement and brand then-prime minister Justin Trudeau as "dishonest and weak." The bad blood never ended, and Trump on returning to office mockingly said Canada should be the 51st US state. Trudeau handed over the premiership in March to Carney, a former central banker who told Trump firmly in the White House that Canada was "never for sale." Like Trump, "Trudeau liked being the centre of attention," said John Kirton, founder of the G7 Research Group at the University of Toronto. Trudeau at least at first was seen as "young, handsome and -- I'm quoting others -- hot. Carney is none of these things," Kirton said. Carney has instead patched up with Trump through his analytical skills and competence, Kirton said. Trump also has an incentive to keep the peace in Kananaskis -- the United States will lead the G7 in 2027. "He doesn't want to kill the G7 golden goose before he can produce the 'biggest, best summit ever' for the whole world stage two years from now," Kirton said. 'America First' The G7 club of major industrial democracies -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States -- was formed in the 1970s to coordinate economic policy and grew in scope to take on some of the world's security hotspots. Trump since returning to the White House has upended the global economic system by imposing tariffs and has sought to negotiate with Russia over Ukraine -- an issue that will also figure prominently when he heads to a NATO summit in The Hague a week after Canada. The US president can be expected to push back in Kananaskis if allies seek to moderate him, said Rachel Rizzo, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. "He does not view these organisations as ways to deepen and expand American power and influence. He sees these fora as constraining America," she said.
