Indulge in Caviar, Filet Mignon, and Bubbles at This Posh New Downtown Terrace
The patio wraps along State Street with a full view of the 149-year-old Holy Name Cathedral as the restaurant sits on the third floor of One Chicago, the luxurious tower that cost about $850 million to build. There aren't too many terrace patios in downtown, so the Alston had an opportunity. The result is a 100-guest heated space built to withstand Chicago's falls and winters.
Though ownership sees the terrace as more of a place for a cocktail or glass of wine, they're not about to squander Jenner Tomaska's talents. Tomaska is behind Michelin-starred Esme and developed the Alston's menu. He's created a special menu exclusive to the patio that leans on seafood with platters of chilled oysters, razor clams, and prawns. There's caviar service, salads, and escargot service with herbed butter and puff pastry. For those envious of the full menu indoors, they can enjoy a filet mignon Bordelaise or a lobster tourte.
Bubbles factor large with a nice Champagne selection. Patio pounders are fun, even in the Gold Coast, so expect a refined selection of cocktails made for outdoor imbibing, like the 'Josephine's 75' mixed with vodka and grapefruit cordial. What's the song of the summer? The Alston is offering 'Chanel No. 5' with cucumber and yuzu. There's also a library of rare whiskies for those into brown water.
While the Terrace will be open seven days a week, it will be closed on Monday, July 21, and Tuesday, July 22. Check out the photos below.
The Terrace at The Alston, 750 N. State Street, open 4 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday; 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Dine With Mexico's Top Chefs At This Upcoming Culinary Festival
The Apapaxoa GastroCultural Festival at Xcaret Courtesy of Xcaret What happens when a group of Mexico's top chefs come together for a week-long culinary festival — is it a bonding experience or do their competitive sides come out? 'It's harmony and passion and sharing the love,' says Carlos Gaytán, the first Mexican-born chef to be awarded a Michelin star in 2013 for his restaurant Mexique in Chicago. 'We share techniques and everything we know.' For chef Karime López, the first woman from Mexico to be awarded a Michelin star in 2019 for her restaurant Gucci Osteria in Florence, Italy, it's also an emotional experience. 'Coming back to my country, my people — it brings up a lot of feelings,' says López. 'I learn so many things from other chefs. There's so much inspiration.' Gaytán and López will be joining a host of other chefs and culinary talents at the Apapaxoa GastroCultural Festival, August 26-31, being held at the Xcaret hotels in Riviera Maya, an hour south of Cancun. The festival will feature six days of dinners, tastings, talks, cultural activities and workshops featuring some top Michelin-starred talent, including Andoni Luis Aduriz (Xal), Paco Méndez (COME), Jonatan Gómez Luna (Chino Poblano), Santiago Lastra (from Kol in the UK), Lucho Martínez (Em in Mexico City) and Luiz Filipe Souza (Evvai). Chef Carlos Gaytán Courtesy of Xcaret The festival will start off with a gala dinner celebrating Enrique Olvera, owner and chef at the two-Michelin starred Pujol in Mexico City. The following evenings have different dinners spread out over the resorts with unique pairings of chefs creating meals together: such as chef Gaytán teaming up with fellow Michelin-starred chef Francisco Sixto at the resort's own Michelin-starred restaurant HA' (that's a lot of stars). The combination of techniques and dishes from chefs who've stayed within Mexico and those who are returning from their restaurants overseas will provide some one-of-a-kind dinners. The Apapaxoa GastroCultural Festival at Xcaret Courtesy of Xcaret Throughout the days of the festival there will be a series of 'Savory Tales' — talks between chefs, sommeliers and other experts on deep dives into Mexican cuisine, such as 'Heirloom Corns of Ixtenco' and 'Michoacán's Culinary Tradition,' as well as talks on Mexico's wines and other beverages and the success of Mexican cuisine around the world. There will be daily workshops on Bioceramics, Chocolate and Xocolatl, as well as book signings by chefs and even by author Laura Esquivel, whose 'Like Water for Chocolate" was adapted into the highest-grossing foreign-language film in the United States when it was released. Every evening will end with a cocktail takeover, featuring master mixologists at a different lounge each night. Xcaret is a group of three hotels and multiple adventure parks in Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya. Hotel Xcaret and Hotel Xcaret Arte are larger all-inclusive resorts — the first being for families and the latter being adults-only. But for a more intimate stay during the festival, or for any vacation, the third hotel of the group La Casa de la Playa, would be the first choice. With only 63 suites, all facing the ocean and each with its own private pool, La Casa de la Playa has a more boutique and private vibe. The resort is also adults-only. La Casa de la Playa Courtesy of Xcaret Even when there is no Apapaxoa GastroCultural Festival, there are four onsite restaurants at La Casa de la Playa providing the best of Mexican cuisine: including XAL which features a merging of Mexican, Filipino, and Basque cuisine, Centli for regional cuisine of Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz and Lumbre for northern Mexican cuisine. Bodega is a private tasting room for sampling high-end spirits and La Cava features a predominantly Mexican wine list — a good opportunity for those who've never sampled the country's growing list of quality wines.

‘Taking a seasonal pause': This Miami Beach restaurant from a celebrity chef is closed
Another Miami-area restaurant is taking a summer break. Lucky Cat, the Asian-inspired restaurant from Gordon Ramsay, is now closed on Miami Beach. The restaurant, which opened early in 2024, announced a 'seasonal pause' on Instagram, calling the break 'A moment to reset' and hinted that it had 'a future to be reimagined.' Lucky Cat is located at 119 Washington Ave. in the South of Fifth neighborhood, next to Jeremy Ford's Michelin-starred Stubborn Seed. 'As the city's tempo softens, we're reflecting on an incredible first chapter and dreaming up what's next,' the Lucky Cat post said. 'To our guests, our partners, and our exceptional team: thank you. This isn't goodbye, just a moment to breathe.' The post hints that Lucky Cat Miami will return at some point, although a couple of restaurants have made the same promise only to close permanently. Ensenada, for example, a coastal Mexican spot at the Vagabond Hotel in Miami, announced it was taking a break, then admitted later it had no plans to reopen. Also not reopening is Sereia, the Portuguese restaurant in Coconut Grove, which closed in May, while Massimo Bottura's Torno Subito team insists the Italian spot on the rooftop of Julie & Henry's will be back in the fall. The three Lucky Cat locations in the UK will remain open, as will Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen Miami at 333 Biscayne Blvd. Way. The first Lucky Cat opened in 2019 in the affluent Mayfair district of London, inspired by Ramsay's traveles in Asia, including Tokyo's vinyl listening lounges and the bars of Shanghai. The restaurants serve an Asian menu with a variety of influences: sushi and sashimi, buns and dumplings, tempura and robata-grilled dishes, bao buns and Korean spiced black cod with gochujang. Ramsay called it 'an exquisite dining experience.' 'The mood is cool, the ambiance dark and sultry,' he said via email in 2024. 'Every plate has been thoughtfully conceptualized, the flavors are exciting, your palate is alive.' He told the Miami Herald he had long kept an eye on the Magic City as it exploded into a dining destination. 'Everything is appealing about Miami,' he wrote. 'From a chef's perspective, the ingredients are incredible, and the food scene is so, so hot right now. There is amazing inspiration everywhere: the art, the different areas across the city, and the weather is beautiful. I love it!'
