Police probe Ballito robbery after man held at gunpoint

The Citizen18-06-2025
A Ballito homeowner was held at gunpoint during an early morning home invasion yesterday in what authorities describe as a brazen robbery on Minerva Road South.
The North Coast Courier reports that, according to Umhlali SAPS, three unidentified men, one reportedly armed with a pistol, entered the property at around 03:00.
The robbers allegedly gained access through a sliding door that had been left open, surprising the homeowner who was working on his computer in the lounge at the time.
The armed thief reportedly pointed the firearm at the homeowner and forced him to lie on the floor while the other two thieves ransacked the home.
Numerous high-value items were allegedly stolen.
In a possible lead for investigators, a power bank believed to belong to one of the robbers was left behind at the scene. The item has been retained by police for fingerprint analysis.
No injuries or property damage were reported and no shots were fired. Emergency services and police responded promptly.
This incident follows a similar non-violent break-in on Marion Road North on Saturday, between 20:00 and 21:00.
In that case, a thief entered through a side sliding door while the homeowners were on the patio, stealing a wallet and a laptop without being noticed.
CCTV footage from the Marion Road incident revealed a robber wearing Adidas shoes similar to those seen in previous cases. However, police noted a different modus operandi in the two incidents.
Ballito Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Morné Steffens confirmed a recent rise in burglaries and attempted break-ins in the area.
'We are very fortunate here with crime usually at a minimum. It's been blissfully quiet, until now,' said Steffens.
He urged residents to remain vigilant, secure all entry points and report suspicious activity immediately.

Duduzile Zuma wears 'terrorist' T-shirt to court over looting tweets

Duduzile Zuma – the daughter of MK Party founder Jacob Zuma – has branded herself a 'modern day terrorist' during her Durban High Court appearance over her July unrest tweets. The MP has been charged with incitement to commit terrorism and public violence. Her trial will begin on 10 November. In a bold move, Duduzile Zuma wore a T-shirt with the slogan 'modern day terrorist' to the Durban High Court over her controversial July 2021 tweets. The daughter of former president Jacob Zuma has been charged with incitement to commit terrorism and two counts of incitement to commit public violence. The trial is scheduled to take place from 10- 21 November. Posting pictures of herself in court on her Instagram account, a beaming Duduzile thanked her supporters. She posted: 'At the end of the day, I'm a good woman, no matter what people say. 'I'm not perfect by any means, but my heart is pure, and I love hard with everything I have.' Her court appearance comes days after she rallied her supporters to take action against anyone who threatened KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. In 2021, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla was accused of encouraging the July unrest, where properties and stores around the country were looted, vandalised, and torched. During the period, over 70 people are reported to have died in violent confrontations. Duduzile Zuma Sambudla has made headlines over her questionable social media posts. Her July unrest tweets from 2021 have landed her in hot water. Images via TikTok: @duduzumasambudla The daughter of the former president retweeted several videos of the violence, which was a direct reaction to her father's incarceration on contempt-of-court charges shortly before. Gauteng cop and wife charged with kidnapping, extortion of Swiss national

JOHANNESBURG - A Gauteng cop from Tarlton Police Station and his wife have appeared in court for the extortion and kidnapping of a Swiss national diamond dealer. Sergeant John Motladile and his wife, Yvonne, briefly appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates court on Wednesday afternoon. They face charges of kidnapping and extortion relating to a 23-year-old Swiss national who arrived in Joburg last week, to purchase diamonds after seeing an advert on Facebook for the gems. The victim was held against his will at a home in Randfontein last week, where he met with a prospective seller of two uncut diamonds. Motladile interrupted the sale, threatening to arrest the victim should he not pay them more than R200,000. The victim was forced into a marked police van, driven to a popular fast-food outlet and ordered to buy the Motladile and his wife food and drinks. He allegedly paid the Motladile and his wife close to R50,000, but this wasn't enough. Interpol raised the flag after the victim's family contacted authorities for assistance. The victim was released shortly after crime intelligence members made contact with him, scaring Motladile and his wife. The pair were positively identified by the victim on Tuesday and arrested. They will remain in custody before applying for bail next week.

Alleged killers of Mpumalanga cop traced to Eswatini

On August 14, the Royal Eswatini Police (REP), with the assistance of Commissioner Vusie Manoma Masango, traced three suspected killers to Eswatini. Lowvelder reports that the suspects allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni on August 8, while he and fellow officers were responding to a burglary at a business centre in Schoemansdal. According to the REP, two additional suspects were later traced to the Sishweleni region. When they noticed the police, they allegedly opened fire, prompting officers to return fire and fatally shoot both suspects. In a statement, National Commissioner of Police General Fannie Masemola thanked the cross-border operation and Masango for assisting in tracing the killers to Eswatini. 'On behalf of SAPS and Mtshweni's family, we would like to thank the REP, led by Masango, as well as the Umbutfo Defence Force for assisting Mpumalanga SAPS in locating these killers. We look forward to strengthening and deepening our co-operation on law enforcement matters. 'The attacks and killing of our police officers are a serious concern, and we call on communities to help put a stop to these killings. From April 1 to date, we have already lost six police officers; we cannot afford to lose more. We need as many boots on the ground as possible to prevent and combat crime,' says Masemola. Further investigation led Eswatini police to Mantambe in Shiselweni, where a third suspect allegedly took his own life with a pistol before police could arrest him. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli extended his condolences to Mtshweni's family. 'Mtshweni's sacrifice is a stark reminder of the risks our police officers face every day. It is a profound loss, not only for his family and friends, but for the entire SAPS community and the society he diligently served. Thank you for allowing him to dedicate his life to serving our nation. Your support and sacrifices have undoubtedly contributed to his ability to uphold the values we hold dear in SAPS.' SAPS leadership, led by Masemola, will attend the funerals of three members who died in the line of duty this past week. Mtshweni will be buried on Saturday, August 16, in Schoemansdal.
