UK aims to tackle Google dominance of online search
HighlightsBritain's Competition and Markets Authority proposed measures to tackle Google's dominance in online search, potentially designating the company with 'strategic market status' under new regulations. Google's spokesman Oliver Bethell warned that the proposed regulations could significantly impact UK businesses and consumers, while emphasizing the positive contributions of Google Search to the UK economy. The Competition and Markets Authority plans to ensure fair and non-discriminatory ranking and presentation of search results, as well as implementing default choice screens to facilitate switching between search services.
Britain's competition watchdog on Tuesday proposed measures aimed at tackling Google's dominance in online search, with the US tech giant warning that "punitive regulations" could impact UK economic growth.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it proposes to designate Google with "strategic market status", subjecting it to special requirements under new UK regulations.
A similar tech

from the European Union, the
Digital Markets Act
, carries the potential for hefty financial penalties.
Britain's CMA in January launched an investigation into Google's dominant position in the
search engine market
and its impacts on consumers and businesses.
It followed the 2025 implementation of Britain's Digital Markets Competition Regime, which the regulator on Tuesday said "can help unlock opportunities for innovation and growth".
Google's spokesman on competition, Oliver Bethell, warned that the CMA update, preceding a final outcome due in October, "could have significant implications for businesses and consumers in the UK".
"The positive impact of Google Search on the UK is undeniable. Our tools and services contribute billions of pounds (dollars) a year to the UK," he added in a statement.
While noting that "Google Search has delivered tremendous benefits", CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell said "there are ways to make these markets more open, competitive and innovative".
The regulator said that it plans to consult on potential changes, including "ensuring people can easily choose and switch between search services -- including potentially
AI assistants
-- by making default choice screens a legal requirement".
Another proposal is for "ensuring Google's ranking and presentation of search results is fair and non-discriminatory".
Bethell expressed concern that "the scope of the CMA's considerations remains broad and unfocused, with a range of interventions being considered before any evidence has been provided".
The CMA noted that "Google Search accounts for more than 90 percent" of online enquiries in the UK.
It added that more than 200,000 businesses in the UK rely on
Google search advertising
to reach customers.

OpenAI goes after Google Docs, Microsoft's Word for web with new ChatGPT features
OpenAI has developed features that let people collaborate on documents and communicate via chat in ChatGPT, The Information reported, citing two people who have seen the designs. Designs for collaboration features suggest OpenAI could even consider developing related productivity features such as file storage, the report said. These features compete with rival Google 's Docs and Word for the web by Microsoft , OpenAI's biggest shareholder and business partner. OpenAI has already eaten into traffic for Google's flagship Search, with ChatGPT becoming popular for web searches. Google recently rolled out its 'AI Mode' for Search in India, after announcing the feature during its I/O event last month. The feature employs Gemini 2.5 to improve Google search results and experience. Meanwhile, the AI major has been hurting business for Microsoft's Copilot AI with its ChatGPT Enterprise , Bloomberg reported. The two tech companies also compete for customers of AI coding assistants and AI models accessed via application programming interface (API) by more advanced developers. Notably, Microsoft's multibillion investments in OpenAI were crucial in making the latter a forerunner in the AI space. It's still not clear if OpenAI will release these features, The Information reported. But in the event it does, it will open a new front in the rivalry with Google, and further complicate its ties with Microsoft. OpenAI is trying to secure Microsoft's blessings for a restructuring plan for its for-profit unit that oversees ChatGPT. Last week, Financial Times reported that Microsoft is prepared to abandon its high-stakes negotiations with OpenAI over the future of its alliance. OpenAI says it has increasingly generated revenue from ChatGPT Team, and even offered discounts on such subscriptions recently. The company has projected roughly $15 billion in revenue from business subscriptions to ChatGPT in 2030, up from $600 million in revenue in 2024 In the works OpenAI product chief Kevin Weil and other company executives first discussed and showed off designs for the document collaboration feature nearly a year ago, the report said. Not much came of it due to workforce limitations and other priorities. The feature got a second wind in October with OpenAI's Canvas, a ChatGPT feature to draft documents and code with AI. More recently, OpenAI developed but hasn't launched software allowing multiple ChatGPT customers to communicate about their shared work in the app, The Information said. Last week, OpenAI announced the rollout of ChatGPT Record mode for ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users. The feature, however, has limited utility since ChatGPT doesn't offer file storage or other productivity features.

MoSPI gets real with artificial intelligence: Surveys to use chatbots
The statistics ministry is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations, with AI-enabled chatbots becoming part of key surveys, to provide accurate and up-to-date data to policymakers to help them make evidence-based policy decisions, the minister said. "To facilitate self-compilation by enterprises in the web-portal based Capex survey, an AI-powered chatbot has been integrated into the portal," Rao Inderjit Singh, minister of state (independent charge) for statistics and programme implementation, told ET. "This chatbot assists respondents by providing guidance on the concepts used across various sections of the survey questionnaire," he explained. The Capex survey tracks capital expenditure trends of private enterprises. The ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) uses AI and machine learning-enabled chatbots for the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE) as well. It is also introducing new surveys and updating existing ones to better reflect present-day economic and social realities, Singh said. The idea is to leverage technology to provide timely data to help the government bring in policies to improve quality of life of Indians and realise Viksit Bharat 2047. Ads By Google Ad will close in 29 Skip ad in 4 Skip Ad A pilot study on the unincorporated construction sector is scheduled for July- December, while a Household Income Survey will be launched from February 2026 to estimate the average income of rural and urban households, the minister said. The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) methodology was revamped in January. Under the new framework, reports are released monthly, with rural data included in quarterly releases. Annual reports will follow the calendar year rather than the earlier July-June cycle. "The updated PLFS design will allow (with state participation) generation of annual district level estimates for most districts across India. It is also planned to release ASUSE results quarterly instead of annually," Singh said. The MoSPI is set to launch two new surveys from July - National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) and Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey (DTES). NHTS aims to assess the spatial origin destination matrix for different transportation modes and influencing factors affecting the mode, destination choice, the price elasticity of travel demand by mode. The railway ministry and the government will use this data for transport planning, Singh said. DTES will gather information on trip purpose, mode of transport, accommodation, final destination within the country, and tourism-related expenditure.

Google Chrome to stop working on older Android devices: Last date, and other details to know
Google Chrome will stop supporting Android 8.0 Oreo and Android 9.0 Pie starting with version 139, according to Chrome Support Manager Ellen T. The announcement was made on the official Chrome support forums. After this update – scheduled for release on August 5, 2025, Chrome will only work on Android 10 or newer, leaving users with older phones unable to receive further updates. 'Chrome 138 is the last version of Chrome that will support Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Android 9.0 (Pie),' Ellen wrote in the forum. While users can continue using Chrome version 138 on their Android 8 and 9 devices, they will no longer receive new features, performance improvements, or critical security updates. Over time, this could affect the browser's performance and leave devices more vulnerable to threats. To recall, Android 8.0 was first released in 2017, and Android 9.0 followed in 2018. Despite their age, these operating systems still have a notable user base. Based on Google's platform distribution data from April 2025, about 4% of Android devices run Oreo, while 5.8% use Pie. Android 10, by comparison, powers over 10% of devices. What happens to Chrome users on devices running Android 8 and 9 For users still on Android 8 or 9, one option is to keep using Chrome 138, although it's not recommended due to the lack of security updates. Another alternative is to switch to browsers like Firefox, which continues to support devices running Android 5.0 and above. However, compatibility varies across browsers, and some may not function properly on older systems. Ultimately, upgrading to a newer Android device is the most reliable solution to ensure ongoing support and security for apps like Chrome.
